    One obnoxious testicle, him.

Could be a great programme. Love to see places that you will never go to.

It's totally spoiled by his snide remarks and unfunny observations. He's a tedious prik.

He's a bit awkward on his journeys Portillo but you learn a little about the places that are visited. Be it trips around Britain, Europe, Australia, India and North America. Super job to have.

The DVDs are pretty expensive now so the BBC have done well there in selling so many copies.

Portillo is fantastic, and has a brilliant way with the people he meets. Always seems genuinely interested in what they have to say and makes them feel special, probably for the first time in the lives in some cases.

He's the polar opposite of the wretched Tarrant.

I must be honest though, I preferred the series where Portillo was visiting mad little villages in the UK to the grand series where he goes abroad, though I understand why the show had to grow. The European ones were very good though.

The soundtrack is very evocative too, the plinky plonky piano ditties. I watched the show with a raging hangover one time and was overwhelmed by nostalgia and overcome with strange emotions and had tears rolling down my cheeks. A strange experience.

He's just as awful. Why does he have to dress like a clown ?
Tony Robinson (on c5?) is far better but the programs are far too short. With all the adverts, it works out at 20 mins.

If he wants to dress what I would say is a bit garishly that is his perogative. I like the programmes. Robinson does a decent enough job with his history programmes. The Worst Jobs series for example. No one beats Michaal Wood though. In Search of this that and the other is illuminating. He's so great at conveying the real life experiences of people at the time. His series on a English villa through time and Shakespeares mother. Incomparable.

Waldemar Januszczak is another with a real love of what he is trying to bring across with his various art series.

And the lovely Suzannah Lipscomb and her series on Hidden Killers of the:

I've got a massive collection of Brooker's stuff - the one things that I'm really missing is when he showed how restrictive/divorced from reality alcohol TV advertising is when he made a 'realistic' beer commercial starring Paul Whitehouse that started off with Paul at the bar saying "Alright boys! I'll get a round in..."

Yet you cheer your heart out every weekend for 11 grown men wearing bright yellow and red monstrosities far worse than anything portillo ever wears.

    Your hypocrisy is breathtaking.

Write to the programme makers and perhaps they could do a series on one way Railway Journeys with pleasant historical stops. You could have Michael huffing and puffing past the centurion and the hill onto the Abbey and paying a visit to the amphitheatre and market. :)

A bit enigmatic at times. Don Cruickshank does a decent job. A bit dry at times. Jonathan Foyle when he pops up is engaging. Climbing Great Buildings was fun. Then you have the one off programmes. One on Welshman Frank Lloyd Wright for instance. Though they neglected to mention Louis Sullivan and his influence the father of the innovative American domestic house and skyscraper. LeBaron Jenny built the first one but Sullivan really developed the idea. Just as much a thinker as creator.

    I certainly don't cheer :)
They had no choice what they wear, otherwise they'd all be decked out in the Holebas range.

Anyone involved in the building of new homes should have to watch, at gunpoint if necessary, episode 8 of this:

With you all the way on Michael Wood, he's excellent. Not on the TV often enough, imo. Waldemar is very good too. And I really like Schama although he's not everyone's cup of tea.

Agree with @Relegation Certs , the British Portillo programmes are the best although the really interesting social/economic history stuff has dwindled over time.

Not so keen on Lucy Worsley.

He has been writing books Keighley. The Story Of China. Also looking forward to Beethoven, A Life by Jan Caeyers as it is the bicentenary and a quarter of one of the greatest genuises in the history of humanity.

As the thread has moved off topic to some highbrow series, here’s a series really worth watching - a working mans hero ..
