Well your question would be a good one if he actually said that "it would all be over by Xmas". But he didn't say that, did he!

    He said;
"It is my strong and sincere hope that we will be able to review the outstanding restrictions and allow a more significant return to normality from November at the earliest – possibly in time for Christmas."

I don't know it was your incorrect interpretation of what he said, you you are merely listening to a few posters on here and some leftie media who are only preparing a cudgel with which to clout him if it isn't all "over by Christmas".

If you are actually interested in what he said, rather than scoring political points, then here is the link.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-on-coronavirus-17-july-2020

Far form ignoring fears such as yours, you will see that he covered a suspected rise in the virus in the winter months.

The Oxford vaccination study's report is out and, so far, all we can really say is that it didn't kill any of the volunteers after day 56... But it's a start and the research process has to start somewhere.

I watched it live whilst grabbing lunch and agree with you.
Twitter can so easily be used to mislead anyone who believes what's written and doesn't check the full detail.
David Schneider is a particularly sneaky leftie as witnessed by the tweet here where everything he claims has been said by Johnson, using inverted commas, either wasn't said or is taken completely out of context.

You cannot deny that the Government has all the way through this crisis said one thing quickly followed by the more or less opposite right back to Boris shaking hands with Covid patients. In quick succession we’ve had hooray the pubs are open, then scary talk of a second wave, followed by confident pronouncements about Xmas.

It’s all about Dom dominating the news cycle and it becomes more and more transparent.

Oh I'm no great Boris fan, esp due to Brexit, but I find it pathetic that commentators feel the need to deceive when surely there is enough legitimate ammo out there ? He clearly didn't say it would be "sorted by xmas" and he clearly didn't say "stop working from home". So why lie ? Are these guys unable to come up with genuine criticism based on what he HAS said/done ?

Clearly it was the message being briefed so there is no need for the huff at Schneider who is a pretty mild sort of Twitter person.

Or the paper just decided to go with a paper-selling headline ?
Schneider posted his tweet after Johnson had publicly said what he said. He knew what he was doing by changing what he'd announced. Deceitful and pathetic irrespective of your politics.

Ah yes, the “leftie media” misquoting Johnson there.

  13. zztop

Yes, the Express misquoted him, but it was not intended as anything other than a rallying call, a positive message to their readers - that if we stick to the rules we can be living relatively normally by xmas.

My initial post to a19tgg was about him saying Boris said "it would be over or Xmas" and it was the leftie press that misquoted him as saying that, purely to score political points against Boris - as that is their only agenda.

Surely you can see the difference?

I’ve never looked at the (now closed) politics section on here specifically to avoid this sort of discussion. I would like to think we could have a thread on COVID 19, the most important challenge of our time, without resorting to political point scoring (of which I was mildly guilty yesterday).

And surely you can see that those reading the Express would take the headline at face value, and have therefore been misled given what Boris actually said? The effect is the same, even if the motivation might be different.

Anyway, WWTW is right, we should leave it there.

....until they read the detail of the article, unlike a twitter post that just presents fake info as fact and isn't a headline grabbing feed into purchasing a paper and a full detailed article.
But WWTW is right, so let's leave it there.

Always going to happen. Surprised it's taken so long. The poorer parts of India & Pakistan will be a nightmare given the population densities, as presumably will the townships inn Sth Africa ?

Glass half full or half empty?

Sweden, like the other Nordic nations, had lots of warning and was able to take its actions (And there were quite a few) at an early stage of its epidemic. It fared worse than its neighbours.

It is now in the same position as everyone else in the Northern hemisphere awaiting a second wave. If vaccines work in Sept/Oct it’s efforts may be judged to have been a mistake. If they do not, then it will be a real test of its herd immunity strategy.

It seems to have done better economically, so far, but finds itself in a worse position going forward in some sectors like Tourism. That may change and then it will be in the same boat as everywhere else, trying to make social distancing work.

Where it may have done much better is that it may have kept more vital health services running than we did.

Yes, it's going to be a disaster.

Infrastructure is so poor that they don't have enough testing to know how screwed they are. High population, enormous population density in certain areas, terrible sanitation in poor areas, deficit in healthcare, areas with low to no education....it's a recipe for a humanitarian crisis.

Sweden really got away with it because outside of about 3 cities their population density is very low. My wife's home country, Peru, has been suffering because despite an early lockdown the poorest people needed to work to feed themselves. Coupled with high population density in shanty towns it just spread like wildfire. Now the Peruvian government are having to adjust the figures upwards, once that's complete the true scale will be realised, they already have an 87% higher death rate in 2020 compared to each of the last 5 years.
