I don’t have a problem with wearing a mask, but do feel for those who rely on lip reading to communicate.

You could always wear one of these absolutely not sinister looking masks:

Do you have to train to learn to feel for the hard of hearing? Sounds very worthy. Can't they feel for themselves?

Are you obliged to keep that expression for the entire time you wear it? I do hope so.

Presume the number of "breathing issues " will rocket up as people try to have any excuse they can to not wear a mask for a length of time.

And if shop staff don't have to wear one then I cannot see customers liking being told off by them for not having a mask on.

I think it’s unlikely to be much of a problem. Lots of other countries’ populations manage it. They will become personalised, fashionable even. You will be able to get a WFC one no doubt.

The Government’s unsubtle nudge team is whipping the country in this direction, simultaneously releasing alarming stats about a second wave and risks to shop workers. It’s the equivalent of herding sheep with a cricket bat, but it will work.

And masks are the right thing to do. If a little bit of cloth helps prevent deaths and a second ruinous shutdown it will be the greatest value for money of all time.

I don’t get the issue. They should’ve just made them compulsory ages ago and job done. I think a lot more should have been done a long time ago to hammer home the fact they aren’t to protect you, they’re to protect everyone else and that wearing one is the responsible thing to do.

Mrs UEA's supermarket has issued an edict from on high that staff will be required to start wearing them from 24 July. And to support this mandatory workplace rule they're kindly sending in two boxes of 50 disposable face masks for staff use. They should last about 3 days.

This is correct. Long before the pandemic we have seen people from certain countries, e.g. Japan, wearing masks, including their tourists over here. This seemed odd to us but it was because they were aware of city pollution levels and were wearing them to protect themselves. The early adopters of masks here during the pandemic were certainly doing the same. The cultural mentality was therefore that if you were confident that you didn’t need protection you wouldn’t wear a mask. The message that it is actually to protect others hasn’t been emphasised enough and hasn’t got through to many.

Agreed, it all got off to a very bad start with all the images of the crackpots on the tube wearing water cooler bottles on their heads and such like. Early on in the pandemic somebody had a go at a friends mum (In her seventies) in a supermarket, telling her they didn’t do anything to protect the wearer. Basically there was a narrative at the start that you’re an idiot for wearing a mask and the messaging since then has all been a bit of jumbled mess. A clear campaign about protecting others would’ve been a simple solution.

Many regions in Spain are now extending mandatory mask use to everything except when exercising or in a bar/restaurant.

The only people moaning about it locally are some "expats" but even they are complying.

I wonder if the psyche of Spain, Italy and Germany to obey the rules is down to their recent histories of living under dictators?

I love the so called British spirit but our ability to moan about everything and make even the smallest things into massive dramas is very tiresome sometimes.

With staff it’s more tricky. Wearing them all day isn’t that easy. You’d hope screens and social distancing will allow for a bit of tolerance. I do think people entering shops and other public buildings should respect the people working there enough to wear them for the short amount of time needed, whether or not staff do.

But wasn’t at least part of the problem at the start supply/availability too?

  15. You shouldn't use the 'e' word, even in inverted commas. The correct term is English cockroaches, sorry, immigrants.

I see a succession of ministers have been queuing up to be papped walking out of Pret A Manger in Westminster wearing masks, only for Downing Street to confirm Pret will be exempt from the mask wearing requirement as it’s a takeaway food establishment. Drawing more fire from the press as a result.

The mask thing will be fine, adherence to the order will be good, all fine that is until Cummings is pictured in the Barnard Castle Co-Op without one and the Government subsequently confirms no law was broken.

Apparently the company sent a follow up this afternoon saying they’re now reconsidering ordering staff to wear them. Presumably whoever sent out version 1 was trying to guess what the government regulations would say and jumped the gun.

It seems Public Health England's definition of a covid death may be somewhat broader than first thought:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...lls-urgent-inquiry-phe-covid-19-death-figures

Loke and Hennegan published a report yesterday. Highlights include:

That's laughable if true. Meanwhile a government source said to the Guardian:

    Nice.

The government has now announced an urgent inquiry to how PHE uses its abacus. Apparently Scotland and other countries don't follow the same methodology and put a 28 day cap on the link between testing positive and dying.

  22. Moose

Sceptical of this. The excess deaths figures don’t suggest a huge anomaly.

I don’t see why this needs to be announced with a fanfare until the evidence is in of what sort of effect it has had.

It’s an easy image to suggest bus casualties might be counted. It would be very daft if they were, but we don’t know if the picture portrayed of the methodology used is really accurate or whether the data is then subject to further checks. When you work with big datasets for official use you tend to subject them to a battery of different cleaning methods, something that may be lost on a ‘Government Source’ off the record.

I don't think it'll massively reduce the figures. But the presentation of them has been awful, pretty much from the start, and it's right they get to the bottom of why.

Anyway, in other news, this will all be done and we'll be (out of the) home by Christmas:

I wonder if the message, roughly ‘back to normal by Christmas’ will be one of those predictions that ages well or badly?

Vaccine development suggests it could be the former. Recent public behaviour with track and trace problems suggest the latter.

Boris is a gaffe prone plonker, but he’s not Trump. Saying it will be all over by Xmas without any basis what so ever is akin to Trump telling people to drink bleach if you ask me. I just don’t get the reasoning for such a statement without either strong confidence in a vaccine, or better knowledge about how the virus works (etc immunity etc) or both.

I could of course be horrifically wrong, but the other day we were being warned of 120,000 deaths and a second wave in winter, and now he’s saying instead it will actually be over at the point it supposedly meant to be the peak of a second wave.

I suspect Johnson's 'back to normal' means everyone (who has a job) back to work and all businesses, including entertainments, open but operating under 'Covid-secure' conditions. Most people's 'back to normal' means back to where we were last Christmas and before.

A shame she's taken to knife point robbery though. Least they could have done is arm Tom Moore too and made it sporting.

She must have thrown a double six to get the sword. Poor old Tom could only have rolled a one with the other die falling off the table and tumbling under the dishwasher. To be handed the hobby horse with stabilisers isn't doing anyone any favours no matter how many laps of your front garden you've done.

I believe we will lockdown again during the seasonal flu season but I feel the death toll will not be as bad as it is feared. Hopefully we will have the vaccine by then but even if we don't as a population we must have learnt from our mistakes.

Not really, it's done an excellent job. Speculative three colour warning system that's "...open to interpretation..."; figures bandied about that are "...open to interpretation..."; advice from an ever changing list of spokespeople that's "...open to interpretation..." and frequent mentions of the "...UK's internal market..."; allowing local government to make decisions about imposing local lockdowns... The list is very nearly endless.
