If you follow in the US's footsteps, it'll be: pretend it's all over, stop being sensible, refuse to wear face masks, stop social distancing effectively and re-spike up before you've even fully finished the first wave.

Needless to say, I don't recommend that approach.

What the government needs to emphasise, and quickly, is that the pandemic isn't over. The purpose of the lockdown was to get cases as low as possible. To keep the numbers at that low level, people need to make good choices.

Speaking of good choices, just got our 6th positive case at work yesterday. Wheee.

Out of how many staff ?

Not sure what our exact current headcount is. We cut all the seasonal staff, interns, etc., and people who have left since the pandemic started haven't been replaced.

Usually it's about 500, give or take, but I'm pretty sure we're a fair whack below that at the moment.

Amazes me how sheep-like many people are! Half a million at Bournemouth when the sun comes out, 10.5m planning on overnight stays at the same time. Most don't need to so why do these things immediately, or don't they realise everyone else will probably have the same idea and will clog up the roads, campsaites, parks etc.

Plus Rinderpest. But that was more cattle and animals. Not sure if it affected us so called humans.

Ok, still reasonable odds then ! Unless it's the person sitting next to you. We only have 12 staff in the UK and fortunately we closed the office a week before Boris told us to. Had we not, I'd have got symptoms 2 days after closing the office and so probably been highly infectious without knowing it when still in the office.

Not terrible at the moment, no. But our pace is, of course, accelerating (the state went from completely shut to completely open overnight with no plan, thanks to the Republicans), and my employer is located in an area where facemasks are largely laughed. I'm not remotely optimistic for the next few months.

Has anyone seen this stuff about "pillar 2" cases and how they're supposedly being brushed under the carpet?

That's interesting. I didn't realise smallpox was literally the only disease we've managed to completely eradicate.

Somewhat ironic that it was the first one we learned to inoculate ourselves against, and yet our only total success to date.

As I understand it, they’re included in the national figures but apparently not broken down by area and so not available for local authorities to use. PHE apparently takes a couple of weeks to compile them and so by the time councils and mayors and the like get them they’re out of date.

Or, alternatively, it’s amazing how people-like many sheep are.

Just when you thought you couldn’t dislike Trump and the US any more, I see the country has apparently bought up almost the entire world supply of Remdesivir through to October.

I suspect that, unless we get a 2nd spike, the numbers will stay below the normal average deaths as the covid-19 has brought forward deaths that would have happened to many over current and coming months.

Agreed, rightly there is an outcry over the excess deaths we’ve seen, but as you say if we don’t get a second wave then in the second half of the year we’ll likely see a lower figure to compensate. That’s why it’s way to early to be comparing one country to another based purely on excess deaths alone.

There is no getting away from who died with the virus, mostly unpleasantly and no reason not to compare now. If the overall death rates recede a little, for the reasons being suggested, should there really be less of an outcry that care homes were encouraged to import the virus?

No, but if you end up with +60k excess deaths in the first part of the year and -30k excess deaths in the second half, and 30k ends up being broadly in line with every other country then surely you’ve got a completely different argument? Prolonging lives by 6 months vs trashing the economy even further?

Went to Trump's Tulsa rally, celebrated lack of masks, got infected, now hospitalised.

74 years old so at elevated risk.

Soho last night. It seems that large street gatherings in London are only broken up by the police if they take place on council estates?

As of one minute past midnight yesterday there are no longer any legal restrictions on gatherings in England. There’s nothing for the police to enforce.

  29. Maninblack

Gatherings of up to 30 are OK as long as social distancing is practised.

I was out last night in a pub. There will 100% be a 2nd wave from what I witnessed. Alcohol and social distancing does not work.

The annoying thing it's not the selfish idiots that will suffer. It's those at risk that will die, or those that have ahered to the rules and suffered because of it, having an extension forced upon them.

It was noticeable amongst the people, young or old, interviewed at pubs yesterday that they considered the risk low enough for THEM. They didn’t get the concept of the risk of passing the virus to others.

Yeah, my last post was wrong. Although social distancing is definitely guidance rather than law, and I don’t think your picture shows a single gathering in the way the law prohibits. Certainly as opposed to the council estate examples you mentioned which are being closed down as raves under long-standing non-Covid laws.

  34. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

True, but what’s the alternative? I think most people will assess the risk to themselves first and then their immediate family/household. Beyond that it all gets pretty indirect. I didn’t go to a pub yesterday but the next time I do I’m not going to be dissuaded because I might come into contact with someone who might then come into contact with someone else who is planning to see their 90yo granny in three days’ time.

The issue I have is why are pubs allowed to reopen with - in reality - no controls over numbers or social distancing, etc and yet the events and theatre industries are still not being allowed to get back on their feet? Food markets are back up and running - again, with few if any controls - and yet an organised food festival still isn’t allowed?
The rules now seem so random and scattergun that you can’t really blame people for interpreting them as it suits them.
