Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

You've got to question his captaincy as well.

He never seems an inspirational leader, but loves to act like the big man.

That doesn't seem to have worked with Andre Gray as he's another Birmingham big man. Do you think any of the united players 15 years ago would have had the balls to have a lockdown birthday party, invite the rest of the team during a relegation battle after Roy Keane had been in the press talking about the health risks to his son?

We have had some very talented players, and repeated managers have failed to get them to consistantly play at their potential. Deeney has been Captain through all of that.

But then just like taking him out the 11, if he left who would replace him as captain who would improve it? Cathcart?

It's depressing reading this because of how much I agree with it. For the remainder of the season he should be nothing more than a last throw of the dice, if we need an alternative for the last 10-15 minutes. I would like to see Welbeck and Pedro given a run of games, permitting Welbeck doesn't get injured. Our season essentially falls on the Norwich/Newcastle/West Ham games now and we simply can't afford to carry any passengers for those games.

I do believe he cares, but I just think it's his rather limited ability has been well and truly sussed out and father time has caught him up.

There seems to be a seriously bad attitude from the players at this time and at the end of each season also, but with Deeny as captain I can understand why they might not be influenced by him if he gave them a bolli**ing.
If he is the example to the rest of the squad were in a very bad place.
Arm waving and shouting and then not delivering yourself will just breed resentment with those who put in a shift and they then think why bother.
I think this is a major part of the problem, we need a captain who will lead by example.
I'm sorry to say it but I feel we need to ship Troy and rebuild.

It's a shame because he used to be one of our favourite players, but now I genuinely dislike the guy. He's all about the media career now, football comes second. Cannot wait for him to leave or retire.

Black Lives Matter we can all agree on that but Mr. Deeney goals also matter and as a number 9 you are failing miserably.

The issue is how we upgrade TD without spending significant money. That's been the challenge for a few years now.

Suarez is worth about £20mil - either we give him a try ourselves, or sell him and use the money to sign another striker instead.

We've got to cover our current loans plus account for the loss of income with relegation. I doubt we will be spending £20m on a striker or getting use of Suarez.

The problem is that we are still going to get relegated whoever we play upfront. Deeney is past it. Able to perform well 4 or 5 times a season but the rest of the time is a liability and has been since our second season in the Premier League. The Deeney of the Championship years was a far better player.

I'd make Hughes captain for the future. Might put some noses out of joint but we need an overhaul everywhere.

Just checked the contracts thread and Troy has one year left (correct?)

I'm of the opinion due to his wages he wont be getting sold. So the question is - will he be getting a new contract?

My guess is probably - but as bad as I feel for saying it, I really hope not. I'd 100% wish him well wherever he went, always welcome at Watford, in our record books and I thank him for what he's done on the pitch over the years but I really want to see something new now.

I reckon he'll go once were confirmed as relegated. There will be loads of desperate clubs looking for his so called experience. WBA or Leeds. Maybe his heart wants to go to Birmingham. Player manager maybe. It's all guess work though. But us as a club need to be more forward thinking from the Summer.

I am not as critical as some about his contribution, but something needs to change.
Either the players or tactics around him need to change to get the best from his abilities or he needs to come out of the team to try different players and approach.
We need to find a way to score more goals.

I'd like to see us try something different in these last few games. Deeney trundling around the park like a malfunctioning dalek isn't going to work, and it looks like his mind is elsewhere.

He is the 'talisman' that rarely inspires, the 'captain' who claimed he didnt care about football (when he was captain of WFC) from the time Mazzari dropped him up to when Gracia took over. He is the No 9 who rarely scores from open play. The 'hard man' who came close to permanently damaging a student who was already on the ground during a fight. The 'leader' who has led us to 104 points from the last 100 league games. The 'hero' who is sleepwalking us to relegation.

Its not Deeney's fault if you delve deeper . Deeney needed some games with Delefeo and Gray playing with him more to bring his effectiveness to shine. Long balls go into him but he's got noone to give it to to get in behind. Remember the goal v Wolves in extra time in the FA Cup with Delefeo and Gray on the pitch?
Delefeo is injured and we have missed him and Gray isn't getting the 25 mins off the bench run of games to effectively help him out. And when Deeney didn't play I remembered we looked all at sea not creating anything.

I don't know how Pearson can put it right without Delefeo, players form dipping since the restart, and him not fancying the bench players much. Only a Sarr resurgence and/or other teams helping us out by losing will save us I think.

If we want a different style and mentality in our football philosophy we need a squad overhaul.

I know you may not like him. He may be not at his best, that his heart might not be in it anymore, he didn't really want to finish the season.

You might have forgotten what he did before the PL. We likely wouldn't be in the PL if it wasn't for him, the leadership he showed in the Championship and the consistent level of goalscoring he had. Its OK to have forgotten that.

But ******* hell, bringing up the prison thing in relation to performance on the pitch? Give it a rest.

    Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Is it really that hard for some of you to accept that he's just massively declined as a player? He's 32. You do realise that's what happens? He has absolutely no pace left, his attacking movement and runs are arguably the worst I've ever seen from a Premier League striker at this point, and it's clear that even his overall work rate has dropped.

Our fans are such enablers of him and his consistent non-performances. He's had his day and now it's time to move on.

Yes, but you also speak about how it's "not his fault". His own individual performances are entirely his fault, as are the poor performances of others.

We have other options now. Welbeck is slowly looking sharper, and we have Pedro and Penaranda who, quite honestly, could not do any worse at this point.

Deeney is a man living solely off of a long since passed reputation. No pace, no movement, no goals, no real leadership, and not even much work rate any more.

The only thing he looks passionate about these days his having his name spoken about in the media. He has gone from, in my opinion, a talisman that summed up everything good about our club, to the complete opposite - another old, disinterested, lazy, non-performer who needs to be put out to pasture.

Well, taking Deeney out of the squad won't fix our rancid squad, but it doesn't mean we don't need to do it.

Deeney is one of several problems, but his status, unstoppable reputation and profile make it more of a focus. And he's fat and getting slower by the game.

Utterly pointless response. I think his post is fair. Do you think Deeney has pace, movement, goals? Do you think he is performing well? At least say what you disagree with.
