Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

Done. He is done at this level. Love him forever and always but he needs to step aside if he is the man he says he is.

Why don’t they hit the channels anyway? Do you honestly think they are desperate to hit the channels but don’t because Deeney demands the ball - really? Sarr, Deulofeu and Pereyra are the three that have taken those other two positions most of the season. Pump a ball to any of them and they’ll never win a thing - not an ounce of bravery between them. So you either play through to one of those, starting with our inept defenders, or go long to Deeney.

Because those other players start deeper when we're in our defensive shape, obviously. The team looks up and if we can't play it along the floor, which we clearly can't at the moment as the whole team is patently not match fit, then all the see is Deeney standing still. He does demand it played up to him, you can see him shouting at (never encouraging) players if they don't hit it to Mr Watford.

You may well be right. It all stems from the Pozzo incompetence with the defence over 6 windows. They are all tinpot and useless so the only option is to play the best targetman we have which is Deeney. What a shambles though.

Absolutely. We should have moved on from Deeney a couple of seasons ago. But we haven’t...and that is Deeney fault to some.

I've been sick of this **** for ages now. Much more interested in sucking off the ***** on talk sport than actualky contributing anything positive for the club he captains on snd off the pitch. The Deeney era should be over and thank **** when it is

No I agree with you, it’s not his fault, he doesn’t deserve the criticism. I think he tried hard and you can’t ask more than that. But physically and technically he’s so limited. The team won’t improve whilst he’s picked. It’s the managers and owners who have kept him as our ‘main man’ that I’m frustrated with. They are football people, how can they not see it?

Well that's the point isn't it? Let's not play long balls. Most of the Premier League don't. Southampton threaded the ball through along the floor time and again today.

I'd play the crock Welbeck up top, Pereyra in behind, Sarr right and Pedro on the left. Capoue and Doucouré behind. Just do something different. Welbeck at least looks fit even if not that sharp and him being in a central position and making a run caused the own goal.

He just needs to f**k off completely.

How can he call himself a captain? He doesn't give a sh*t, just like the rest of the squad! He should be having players up by the throat if he was a genuine captain and holding them to account, although clearly he can't do that because he'd have to actually be playing well himself. He has no credibility.

To play two forwards with pace to stretch defences and work in the channels and overlap with the equally pacy Sarr and Pussetto. The game plan is so predictable. Embarrassingly so.A couple of us put our line ups before the match and I know what I would like to see tactically.

Watching the first 45 minutes was appalling. I'm lucky I didn't have a coronary. The inability to even execute a simple pass. To move off the ball. And the pitiless repetition of lumping the ball many times without even looking. What is the point when no one else can get in around him ? We sat so deep as well. Deeney was asking Foster to kick the ball at him at Burnley as well. Like all great generals one does not win football games by sticking to the same predictable plan. NP also needs a shellacking.

And that is my point. Coating Deeney off for a woeful style is pointless. Put Welbeck up there and pump balls up to him and we’d be even worse. The style is the issue. How many decent deliveries in the box today? One - from Holebas. Which started with Deeney winning the header and it then getting played wide.

Great idea. Let's completely tear apart our methodology with a few games left of the season and try a passing game. That'll go really well.

Basically Deeney is **** and should never be starting let alone playing in the PL but we have absolutely nobody else, we are **** all round and there is no choice but to play hoofball. Reminds me of when Mr Integrity came in and tried to make Jay Demerit do something other than hoof it, ended terribly. Not that this won't...

I think Deeney has been brilliant for Watford but the truth is he is not any good anymore. Comparing him to Danny Ings is like comparing chalk and cheese. You cannot afford to have a centre forward who is too slow and does not score goals. It's time to unload and rebuild as the championship beckons. Depending on who stays I think we have less chance of promotion next season than Norwich who if they hold on to their young squad will improve quickly.

The point is we would not be lumping it into Welbeck. We would actually playing to our strengths. We have mobile players with speed and technique out wide. Having one tree who cannot move and playing it into him constantly make the opposition defences life so easy. Get Pedro and Welbeck to move their two trees out of position down the channels and allow Sarr to overlap, cut in and offer multiple options in the box. Ditto for the left with Pussetto. It is cringeworthy coaching. I would have made more of a change today in charge than NP. It was pathetic. Dear God never made this mistake. He was tactically astute and not one to faff about making changes to create chances.

45 minutes of endless hoofing. We need to get down the channels with pace and in behind. When we did manage to get Sarr off we created threats. Besides Capoue was on his lazy backside again and Hughes and Doucoure too far away to rarely pick up on the one or two knockdowns he did win from Vestergaard. Pitiful coaching and game management. An abomination. It is one of the worst 45 minutes I've seen.

Any time Deeney has come off the tactics have remained the same. If you think taking him out means Dawson/Cathcart start playing more creative football then I disagree.

We lump it long - simple as that. If you lump it centrally Deeney might win something. If you lump it centrally we win nothing. If you lump it in the channels we win nothing.

Our squad isn’t good enough for anything other than what we are doing. If we want a bit more football to play in our wide men who won’t challenge for a header then we need better players behind them than Masina, Femenia, Cathcart and Dawson.

I disagree that we can’t do better. It’s not Troy’s fault the manager wants to play that way - with that tactic he’s our best option. Or maybe it’s deemed the best tactic to build around our main man.

Remove Troy and try something else.

I think Leighton I would have Pereyra creating in behind and Doucoure and Capoue can be a creative enough force in midfield. I would be getting them to pick up off the keeper because as you say Dawson and Crashcart are awful on the ball. Or get it to Masina/Femenia to work down the flank then inside to Caps/Doucoure. We are so static at times and so sideways. Never on the front foot.

The problem is, as has been pointed out for the last 3 years, Pozzo incompetence has left us with dreadful, awful defenders. They have no other tools at their disposal than to hoof it. If we remove Deeney they will be running around with more awfulness than usual. Mind you, it cant get much worse so I'd rather we try and learn. But Pozzo has been so useless that we are stuffed whatever we try.

When Deeney was out and Grey played we did the same thing, pumped long balls forward and then stood back to watch Grey try and win them. If he did there would be no one within thirty yards of him anyway. It's a rotten system that we can not even play long ball with any competence.

I'd rather watch us try and keep it on the ground and give others a chance and fail miserably, than continue to watch us hoof long to that d**k head and watch the same hideous football and non-performances from the usual suspects every week, and still fail miserably.

Im all for different opinions but you sound utterly hysterical about Deeney. I’d politely ask, genuinely, if you are ok? I don’t mean this lightly but life is hard at the moment with Coronavirus and us supporting a woeful football team doesn’t help...but look after yourself and stay calm.

  27. leighton buzzard horn

That’s my point exactly. If all we are going to do is pump it then he’s the best we have for it. If we got it down and played with a two I’d say Welbeck and Pedro, even Welbeck and Gray. But we’ve employed the same style all season even when Deeney was out injured.

Oh I don't disagree, the problem of course is that we play long ball regardless of who is up front which shows a particular brand of stupidity from the management and players. I don't particularly like Grey but watching his team mates play forty of fifty yard balls that arrive three feet above his head quickly lost it's charm.

As for Deeney, well time has not been good to him, how many good games will he have given this season, two, three? It's not enough, he is not a talisman any more, just a player living off past glories and personally I hope this is his last season whatever league we are in. How much is he indulged by the club I wonder, his fitness levels, mouthing off in the press, would any other player be so cossetted. If he had gone to Grey's party would the clubs reaction be the same, you would hope so but ....

His legacy as a Watford player is sadly washing away.

It honestly pains me to see the demise of Troy on the pitch. He's been a great servant for the club, scoring vital goals & contributing off the pitch as well. He's not good enough now & to be fair he hasn't been for the past few seasons.

  33. I don't believe for a minute a long line of highly experienced coaches haven't seen Deeney for what he is, is a very limited player.

But he seems untouchable. The club thinks the sun shines out of his backside. I wouldn't be surprised if coaches were pressured into playing him.

Until that changes, or he leaves, or retires, we're stuck with him, and that defines how we play. Hoof. For the next 2-3 years at any rate...

Well you want to play tika taka with Craig squared, the Senegalese Theo Walcott and Glass Welbeck do you?

Honestly I wasn't even disagreeing with you, but you're delusional if you think we won't hoof the ball up the Deulofeu if Deeney is injured. Think Jurado v Man City

Even if we did end up playing the same long ball crap, Welbeck up top would still do more with it than Deeney. Not sure how anyone can defend his recent performances.
I think a big part of it is fitness - he can put in a decent performance still when in top condition (he had a good run earlier this year).
But right now he is utter turd. We cannot keep playing him.
When he was getting a bit angry near the end of the game earlier, I was praying he would get a red card to force the change. Pearson needs to be brave.
