So yeah, tonight was ****, but we have to dust ourselves down and go again for the next of our yuge games. 7 to go, 5 of which we can definitely target a win, still very much in our hands.

    Team I'd pick:
    Foster
    Masina Dawson Cathcart Femenia
    Capoue Chalobah
    Doucoure
    Welbeck Sarr
    Deeney

Cathcart wasn't convincing, but every time Kabasele got in the picture we were in trouble, and he didn't play well against Leicester neither. Hughes definitely was flagging a bit there, Chalobah is fresher and can hopefully add some more energy to the midfield. Welbeck wasn't entirely useless, created our biggest 'chance' when he failed to take a shot, scraping the barrel there a bit, but what better options do we have?

Against probably the best away side outside the top 2/3.

They will come to counter attack and have a man in form.

Start turfing out at least some of the spineless cowards and the immobile captain. All useless. Obviously I'd replace the defense as well but Pozzo incompetence has left zero options. Beyond caring if some of these are ready - at least they will buzz around and show some movement.

    Foster

    Femenia
    Cathcart
    Dawson
    Masina

    Capoue
    Doucoure
    Quina

    Sarr
    Joao Pedro
    Peneranda

No point. Players showed tonight they are not bothered, so why should I.

If you're going down, go down with a bit of fight. Give it a go FFS. Bloody fairies.

Not true. Lack of travelling, pitch dimensions, home facilities and general familiarity add to the advantage as well as fans.

Even if that is a factor (probably is to an extent, but we've not seen home teams do as well as normal since the restart), these are almost like pre-season games, and Southampton will surely be on the beach like they were today

Free hit. Like every game this season, we can win the one after it.

Well they are awful at home and much better away it seems.

Arsenal closed them down and had a free kick on target for the 2 goals.

    Can we manage that ?

We now have to go and win so could get caught on the attack ..

Dropping Troy might just be the start here. Pearson has to try something different. He keeps switching the defence and midfield why not actually try something else up top. It's so predictable lumping it to Troy.

Whilst I agree something else needs to be tried, you cannot drop Troy IMO. Without him the ball just does not stick up front. The chickens are coming home to roost now. We're not good enough at the back and never have been, and we're not good enough up front, certainly not without Deulofeu. At least with Deeney he does win headers and is occasionally up for the fight....when we play Arsenal or Villa that is.

To me, yesterday was the biggest alarm bell since Pearson came to the club. Initial form was good, but we're just living off that fantastic Liverpool victory now.

Since the Bournemouth away win, we've only pick up 6 points from 9 games. There has to be a reaction from the performance yesterday in the next match. If we put in another limp-wristed display like that, then I just cannot see Pearson staying beyond this season.

He's all about getting players fired up. Not the greatest tactician, and I think most would agree with that, however, his great strength is motivation. That was sadly missing in a very important match yesterday, and if he can no longer motivate the team then time is probably up for him.

Personally I like Pearson and I want him to succeed, but I can imagine the decision makers at the club, after yesterday's performance, would have cast a lot of doubt in their minds.

We have to win probably at least another three matches. Time is running out and so are those winnable games.

The problem is the alternatives are even worse. There literally is nowhere to go if you want to replace him upfront. Mariappa maybe ?...

I think the biggest issue faced by a manager big on motivation in this odd restart period is the players can see the hectic fixture list too, feel the hot weather, worry about injuries etc and so are more likely to play within themselves than normal. They know there's no rest coming soon and the bench is so weak that for 6 or 7 of our players they know they're going to asked to play 60 mins plus every single game. You can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink, as the saying goes.

I think yesterday the team tried - consciously or unconsciously I've no idea - to cruise through the first half to save energy for a push after HT. And for 15 minutes it appeared to be working but as fans we know the script and the way it played out in the end was inevitable. We miss several good chances and Burnley score with the only move they strung together in the half. Deja vu.

As a result, we have to go all out effort against Southampton now. So it's completely backfired on them.

I don't think that was the plan at all, and apparently Pearson gave them a rocket at half time. The weather and hectic fixture list is the same for the other side. In fact we had all the omens in our favour. They have many injuries to key players, there is unrest behind the scenes apparently, they got battered only two days prior to our match. We had two days extra rest. There was absolutely no excuse to lose that match, yet we did and we lost because there was a lack of endeavour. Players were not making the runs or taking the initiative. We have a very experienced side, and they know you cannot coast through a game of football at Premier League level.

There's just no excuse for what we saw yesterday.

    And the circle continues...

Play with Troy and he gets hammered for not being better/quicker/taller. Play without him as we were at the start of the season and you realise we are even more ineffective up front without him. The majority of our squad are pussies, TD does the ugly work they don't want to and brings them into it.

Deeney out = nothing sticks up front. Bring back Deeney.
Deeney plays = Deeney is rubbish, wah wah wah, drop Deeney.

    Repeat.

I know it isn't fashionable to have a pop at the big name players but has Sarr delivered a decent ball in the two games back yet? And would Welbeck have got that shot away yet if the defender hadn't come in or would he still be fannying around with the ball? If Pereyra had the heart of a human rather than the heart of a mouse would he have maybe put his head on that cross against Leicester rather than turning his back and dangling a big toe at it?

Deeney might not be the player he used to be but we are still better with him than without him. The fact we haven't upgraded on him yet is down to others at the club.

Deeney needs to give them all a rocket as well. Out of them all Hughes was the most committed along with Sarr who lives every ball as if his life depends on it. Some of the others need a massive kick in the pants. Capoue was the biggest culprit yesterday swanning about. It was his mistake that led to their goal and his nonchalance is not what is needed at a time like this. Masina played well too. They as a group did not work hard enough or use their brains. The number of times the ball was wasted on hoofed passes to no one. The number of set pieces floated in.

We are superior technically but never made any use of it barring the 20 minutes after the break. Very similar to Leicester. A strong period after the break and then tailing off again. It is as if Nigel and Shakespeares words are forgotten. But the initial set up from Nigel was at fault. He has to realize this group are not as malleable or as hard working as that he had at Leicester. Too many soft centres.

As for the Saints. Safety already for them. No pressure even minus Hojberg. They have pace upfront, will sit deep with the onus on us and Ings is on fire. The team must not rush this game either because that is just as likely to cost more points. They need to be focused but calm and keep the ball play it in behind and get it to Sarr. Deulofeu is a big miss at the moment. With him our chances improve a great deal as keeping him and Sarr quiet is not easy.

    -------------------------------------------------Foster-----------------------------------------------------
    ----Femenia-------------Dawson----------------------------Cathcart----------------Masina---------
    ------------------------Hughes---------------------------------Capoue---------------------------------
    -------Sarr-------------------------------Doucoure(Chalobah)----------Pussetto(Pereyra)-----------
    ---------------------------------------Welbeck (Pedro/Deeney)------------------------------------------

Play with pace upfront in and behind their slow defence which prefers the aerial battle.

Largely agree with this, Deeney did a good job vs Leicester, sure he is often nowhere to be seen when crosses come in, but it's not his fault Doucoure couldn't finish his dinner, or that nobody else was making runs into the box.
Feel a little bit for Sarr, he's not been at his best since the restart, but it would make life so much easier for him if we didn't just have players loitering around the edge of the area, and we did so very little to get him involved in the game yesterday. Like it or not, we're not going to see a sea change in our style of play, so we're gonna need Doucs and whoever is playing out on the left to really bring it if we're going to get out of this

Start Pedro or Welbeck up top and drop Troy to the bench. He's probably better coming on from the bench anyway.

  30. Last night was so depressing. Boiling hot. Baby wouldn't sleep. Watford lost.

Woke up this morning not even wanting to bother with football all weekend.

If villa get an absolute stuffing tomorrow I may just give Sunday a watch.

I may just wait til half time and put it on if the score is going our way.

I hate football for making me hate football.

I usually get pissed off for a couple of hours and then calm down but I am still so unhappy about last night, I even woke up this morning fuming. If there is not a positive response in this game then I have genuinely had enough. Southampton are not amazing at the back and from what I have heard from my Southampton supporting friend is that they couldn't really be arsed to get out of 2nd gear yesterday evening, however if truth be told 2nd gear is probably enough to beat us anyhow. They have not got anything to play for now and we have everything to play for so you would hope that would play into our hands but probably not, my prediction is 3-0 Southampton. My friend also said that he wouldn't even mind us winning as Bournemouth are annoying and he would rather see them go down :D

Truth be told, Southampton is just the kinda game you want at this point of the season. Can't get relegated, can't get to Europe.

Their players would mentally be on summer holiday right now, problem is they just had 3 months off so had all the break they needed.
