    Talk of regional lockdown easing.

    Will that work ?

Or would we get people saying why "do they get to open pubs , cafes and not us"

People will simply travel to an area that is open. Waste of time. All or none. It's either the time or not.

  7. With tens of thousands choosing to ignore social distancing every weekend in major cities, and the police doing nothing about it, it hardly makes sense to continue to put business through the mangle. If there is a second wave the Gov can just blame extreme right and left.

During lockdown the French had a zonal system where different places, including cafes and restaurants, were open or closed depending on location. There, as you say, I know people just travelled to the open areas.

The thing is though, I’m just not that arsed so I wouldn’t bother travelling. I love a pub and I do miss them, not so much that I’d bother travelling somewhere if they were closed locally though. It’s not going to be the same experience either.

My company has built a self isolation tool for the NHS depending on exposure. I will take a look tomorrow and let you know the scenarios.

Has either your daughter, her friend or anyone she's been in contact with, shown symptoms?

No, not that I’m aware of. The mum herself (who has tested positive) said she had been experiencing a bit of breathlessness which she thought was a “new” hay fever symptom but she also said that had been going on for about a month so I don’t see how that can be Covid as she tested negative the week before last.

You were spot on. In very unfortunate timing, Mr HH is trying to get a doctor’s appointment but they won’t see him or do blood tests, etc because we are self isolating. After his symptoms (not Covid) got worse, he has spent the night and this morning going round in circles with NHS 111 and his doctor. NHS 111 told him at 1am a doctor would call “within 6 hours”; no call back; rang NHS 111 back after 6 hours - they had no record of his call or their guidance, so he had to start again; told to ring GP; GP told him to call NHS 111 again. During the latest NHS 111 call, he has been told that we were given wrong advice initially and that we do not need to be self isolating. So now we are back at square 1, trying to get hold of the doctor again. Even though we outlined to the GP initially that no one in our immediate family had had contact with the person who had tested positive, they were not interested - just heard the words “self isolating” and took the “computer says no” approach.
I am absolutely ******* fuming. How many more people are getting duff advice from the 111 service? And how many more people are being (wrongly) refused treatment for potentially serious conditions because of this?

The US south is creeping towards shitshow status at a remarkable rate now. Texas is in big ******* trouble, and Florida is shaping up to make New York look positively tame; for those not familiar with Florida's demographics, it's a massive retirement state with a significant percentage of US adults retiring there (drivers for that include warm-to-hot weather year round, and no state income tax). The retirement communities seem likely to be devastated.

US handling of this has been a complete shambles. What the powers that be managed to do was create a huge economic shock without seeing things through to get the virus under control, which is about the worst possible scenario.

Almost half of the country refuses to wear a mask because they're overgrown children bleating about their "rights" while ignoring that those rights come with responsibilities attached, and the other almost-half have become distracted by the ongoing BLM protests as a result of the murder of George Floyd.

Meanwhile, the US President is telling his government to slow down testing because the numbers make him look bad, and hiding money that was allocated by Congress to fight the pandemic.

So while the UK response has been pretty damn poor, console yourself with the fact that it could have been a lot worse.

Reports coming out now that Texas hospitalization are up 60% over last week. Given that these are people who were infected ~ 3 weeks ago, this is going to go downhill very, very quickly.

    Stay safe, @luke_golden .

    Fake news m8.

In all seriousness though, it was very predictable. Just about everything has been open for weeks now, and there’s been almost no social distancing/mask wearing in general for the last 3-4 weeks.

Local news reporting that ICU’s will be at max capacity in 4 days.

I’m not worried though, President said it would disappear in summer like a miracle.

    Wisconsin.

We're doing alright on paper at the moment, but it won't last.

The state Republicans challenged the Governor's stay at home order in court, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court made a decision (on partisan lines) that the order wasn't legal. So while we're alright at the moment, when things inevitably start to hit the fan in the coming weeks, the Governor won't be able to do anything about it.

Sad thing is our Governor acted very early when we had a very small number of cases, so all the good early work has been undone.

Are we yet to reach the stage where we can say the BLM mass protests and counter-protests seem to have had no impact at all on the downward trend in cases in England?

Deaths continue to fall, ICU patients down, hospital admissions down, fewer people testing positive (now <1000 per day) and even calls to the 111 NHS line reporting Covid symptoms down 30%+ in a week (and 97% below the peak).

Bournemouth has declared a state of emergency due to the amount of people coming in and their inability to stop them:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-53176717

‘The Council’s spokesman, Mr Howe, said “First it was Milovojevic and Ayew, then Jimenez. We just can’t stop them. We’re seriously worried Joelinton might be next. Please send soft penalties urgently, they’re out lifeblood and since VAR broke out we’ve not been able to cope. With the public toilets shut its true, we’re shitting ourselves.”

Bolsonaro takes the biscuit even from Trump for idiocy. Once again Johnson are ignoring the science and listening to Wetherspoons and their donors. They have also been far too lax with the public the vast majority of who are complete idiots. Their continuing selfish irresponsible behaviour will undoubtedly see a second spike and the deaths as usual of those who have been following the advice. These numskulls seem to think like Johnson that over a thousand new cases a day is no cause for concern and still a substantial number of deaths each day. When you compare the figures in the UK to many other nations this is still the time to be cautious and measured and make sure idiots follow the rules to allow the nation to reopen. Because the way they are carrying on we will see lockdowns again. Because these idiots can not be trusted to act in a responsible manner.

So much for staying alert and using common sense. They don't have any.

I think the UK is at particularly high risk compared to many other nations purely on the basis of population density.

Being a small island, we have a lot of people packed into not a lot of land. 21st for population size, 78th on land area. And considering a lot of that land area is very sparsely populated (Scotland, Wales) we have a high population size packed into a small area. Makes it far easier for things to spread rapidly.

One of the things saving Trump from looking worse than he does is the size of the US. It's simply taking time for the virus to reach everywhere, but that's starting to happen now and the rural areas/south are going to be smashed over the coming weeks.

  27. When tens of thousands of people selfishly decide they are going to protest in London, or party on the beach in Bournemouth, or have a rave, attack the Police and then attack each other with knives in Brixton or Bristol, what is it you expect the government, any government, to do?

With a lower infection count I'd suggest the threshold for admission has reduced as well as getting a better handle on the drugs and procedures that work best.

These are the likely reasons. More understanding of the disease, better treatment and less vulnerable individuals being treated in hospital. Also the increase in sunlight and vitamin D levels is ascribed as having an effect.

  31. Because in the early days a lot of infection happened within hospitals to people who were already not in the best of health.

Would be really interested to know what proportion of the population have had the virus without even knowing it. The person we know who tested positive is now back at work after a negative test. If her work didn’t take her into hospitals she would have been none the wiser as she had no symptoms throughout.
Meanwhile, I’m hearing of more and more people who are still waiting for delayed treatment and tests for other serious illnesses, including cancer. My worry is now how many excess deaths will there be as a result of these delays? Surely the NHS (& private healthcare) can’t keep prioritising Covid over all else any longer?

It's a fair question. Let's look at cancer.

One of the treatments for cancer is chemotherapy. Chemo destroys your immune system.

There's a serious question to be answered over whether severely compromising someone's immune system in the middle of a pandemic for a virus that has essentially no cure and limited treatment is in a patient's best interest or not. Certainly that's a question for healthcare professionals to work out, and I suspect there's a lot of bespoke subjective decisions being made in the background.

The decisions being made in hospitals about who to treat and who not to treat are being made by the experts. They're weighing up a bunch of factors using data and expertise that most of us don't have. I don't think doctors are prone to acting maliciously on matters of public health, so unless there is pressure coming from political quarters (who often are idiots, or at least profoundly self-interested rather than following data) I'm inclined to trust their recommendations until we're given a really good reason not to.
