Well they wouldn't would they. It was a goal against the home side.

I want to chants of "F*ck VAR, F*ck VAR" and "You don't know what you're doing" to be played during games. That would be hilarious.

The only two people that knew the ball had crossed the line were the linesman and Tierney on VAR. I don't blame Oliver too much because he does not have the down-the-line angle. The linesman did and so did Tierney. These are the two that catastrophically failed yesterday and should take the blame for not doing their jobs.

I think that’s nonsense. If that were true we would’ve never have needed goal line technology in the first place. The reason goal line technology came in in the first place was because of constant errors significantly bigger than this. Why should the officials be expected to spot something so marginal happen live when under the impression there is 100% reliable technology to do it for them?

I imagine linesmen at the top level have stopped looking these days.

Big of you not to blame Oliver. Are you going to let the other linesman and the fourth official off the hook as well?

You have a very high opinion of linesmen's eyesight if you think the lineman knew it had gone in. I don't know how confident you are in your own eyesight, but if you see an incident once from 40 yards away at not quite the right angle when there are two moving players, one moving ball, and a goalpost and net in the way, and you are really watching for sometihng else, and a previously 100% reliable electrical measuring system says it didn't go in - would you be confident enough to stop play and say it 100% certainly went in?

It's his job. I've run the line down the local park for the kids plenty of times. It's very easy to position yourself in the right place to see if a ball crosses the line or not. We're not talking about a partially sighted person here, so yes, I do expect he can see more than 40 yards. He's an FA qualified official. There's no excuse for missing it or not having the confidence to say that ball crossed the line. To not blame him at all, is letting him off the hook far too lightly.

However, lets not deflect this completely to the linesman. He is to blame, but the main culprit is the VAR official. There is no benefit of the doubt that can be afforded to him at all.

Those to blame, to varying degrees are in this order. VAR official and assistant, linesman looking at the goal and finally Michael Oliver for not sensing something was clearly wrong and not having the confidence to take it to VAR or even look at his monitor. The rest of the team, like fourth official and other linesman can only take the blame by association.

It’s not their job anymore surely? And if seven cameras missed it why would a human not even looking for it spot it?

  15. UEA_Hornet

Seriously? Referees can't take anything to VAR. Nor can they look at the monitor just because they fancy it.

  16. hornetboy1

So it's ok to allow a "goal" to not stand? Why are so many people just so passive and accepting.

All I'm hearing is "VAR can't intervene, "referees cannot ask VAR", "A monitor is there, but he's not allowed to use it, unless instructed by someone who is not allowed to intervene."

This is the product we now have.

Seriously, the rules have to be challenged and changed. So many people just want to make excuses and apologise for these fools. The situation is just ridiculous.

Nobody is disagreeing that it’s a stupid situation, but just pointing out to you what the rules are, rather than it being some convoluted conspiracy.

I'm not dead set against changing that rule but there's no point bashing Oliver like you are for doing what the VAR regulations and Laws of the Game say he should do.

That said, the reason the rule exists is to stop referees becoming over-dependent on VAR and copping out of decisions by running off to check the monitor every five minutes. The bit I don't understand about yesterday is the suggestion that Oliver didn't award the goal so VAR couldn't intervene. Surely the act of not awarding the goal was itself a decision which VAR could then review? Very confusing approach by PGMOL.

A made up accusation. I've not bashed Oliver once in any of my posts.

An exaggeration also to suggest referees would use the pitch-side monitor every 5 minutes. It's been used just once all season, and that was ironically Michael Oliver in a little experiment after there was a lot of criticism just before lockdown that no one had used it once. He used it to stop that comment from being made.

It's there for them to use if they wish to do so, but the PGMOL leaders have discouraged it, although not forbid it.

Oliver could use it if he wanted to do so. There would be no one to stop him.

People bend over backwards to defend "the rules" no matter how ludicrous they are. This is what I find a little odd.

You said he didn’t sense ‘something was wrong’ and lacked ‘confidence to take it VAR’. I’ll let others judge if that’s bashing him or not.

Well, you must be a super sensitive soul if you think that's giving someone a bashing......but I'll leave others to decide if you're super-sensitive or not.

You've said that the refereeing team, as a group, cheated and that you don't blame Oliver as much as the others. That sounds like bashing to me.

The rules don't need changing - they just need to be administered better. Tierney was caught like a rabbit in the headlights not realising that he could intervene until it was too late - the time difference between the first replay being shown and the corner at the other end being taken, was not long. He didn't make the decision to stop play and have a look when he should have and could have. That's all. Next time it happens, the VAR ref will be more aware.

It will save these nonsense conspiracy theories about how the league so badly wanted the first game back to be a 0-0 draw that several people were willing to risk their careers for it. It's a theory that makes no sense.

So I don't blame Oliver as much as the others, and that's giving him a bashing. God, some people on here are just a bit strange. I've not used the word "cheated" once in any of these posts. So a little white lie to aid your cause.

What is the point of having goal line tech and VAR? As VAR is the more up to date tech maybe it is time for it to supersede HAWK-EYE.

However, if they are to be run alongside each other then VAR should have the right to step in and inform the ref if they spot a clear major error that has been missed either by Hawk-eye or indeed the on-field Ref.

Furthermore perhaps VAR should possibly have a means of stopping play immediately by perhaps sounding a klaxon, so that play does not progress too long after they have spotted any such clear major error.

Of course you called him a cheat. You've said that he knew the ball had gone in but he deliberately didn't award the goal because "someone wanted that to happen". If you accuse someone of deliberately breaking the rules, then you are accusing them of cheating. That's simple English.

You said that the refereeing team as a whole cheated (even if you don't actually know what the word means) and you said that Michael Oliver was cuplable (even if you don't know what that word means either).
