Tom Allen (The camp, posh, bald, suit wearing bloke)

It’s just taken me ages to find out what his actual name is, but it seems like he’s been on every bloody show during lockdown, I swear he’s on my TV at least three times a day. I don’t actually know what he’s famous for either but I’m absolutely sick of seeing him.

Back on thread topic, however, his fellow guest, Paloma Faith. Can't stand her.

I'm a privileged white man with a nice garden and family close at hand, but I believe that Black Lives Matter and in normal times I would almost certainly have joined a march in London. But these aren't normal times. Don't the people who took part in those Cheltenham Festival-style events at the weekend care that a second wave of the coronavirus will disproportionately affect non-white people, as well as prolonging the imprisonment of the disadvantaged in their tower blocks, denying lonely people a chance to see friends and family, disrupting young people's education and making a lot of people do without sex? And if we want the police to treat non-white people with more respect, how is throwing Boris bikes at police horses going to make them more sympathetic?

I would have agreed with you (except the bit about sex, more of a luxury than a necessity I'd say) and would definitely joined a march if it weren't for shielding but then I came across this. If the rest of us have to stay in lockdown a bit longer because the R number (a wild stab in the dark with little robust scientific basis) goes above 1, then so be it.

That’s just the view of one person, though. It’s not the view of every NHS worker, BAME or otherwise.

What I meant to include, but forgot, was that the organisers of the London protests could have been a bit more imaginative, and encouraged small groups of people to gather with their banners on every street corner in central London. That would have taken more organisation and a less obvious photo-op, but with the media tipped off in advance it would have worked.

"Think of the NHS workers" has always been a ridiculous position upon which to decide to do or not do anything anyway - and it was the centre-piece government policy for week after week.

Unless I’ve missed something outdoor gatherings (of more than 6 people) are still illegal. Nothing wrong with peaceful protest and there was obviously a lot of leniency in that respect despite it being illegal for the time being. But once it gets violent and people start chucking things at horses, doesn’t that undermine the whole thing?

As I said, nothing wrong with peaceful (Socially distanced) protest, but with BAME people at four times risk, if one black person dies because the protestors undermined the current rules even more than the authorities were willing to allow, doesn’t that completely undermine the whole thing?

Black lives matter, yet we’re going to undermine the rules deliberately in place to try and protect black lives?

It was the whole focus of flattening the curve - keep the cases at manageable levels and to avoid completely over-whelming the hospitals with sick and dying patients. Made perfect sense to have this as on objective.

Very much the minority view amongst NHS staff, black and white I know. Yes demonstrate, yes do something online, to raise the profile but to cause the deaths of more black (and white) people by insisting on packing out a few physical locations is just plain stupid. Those demonstrating were generally below 50 and knew that they would be ok if they caught it, and their principles meant more that the lives of friends, family and NHS/shop staff.

Exactly. Far be it from me to defend this appalling version of a Tory government, but "Save the NHS" didn't mean save NHS workers, it meant save the organisation from being overwhelmed so that it would still be there to help any of us who needed it, either now or in the future.

Any other protest would resoundingly be called ignorant and stupid in light of covid-19. Raheem Stirling "there's only one disease right now" statement is plainly wrong.

I'm accusable of white privilege because im white (which is in my opinion just a way of attributing discrimination over skin colour, thought thats something we wanted to eradicate?). I can't get my head around the reaction and comment to Floyds murder If white people who consider themselves not racist but subconsciously make racist decisions are the problem and not a few nutcase gun toting american cops, I have no idea how we can overcome it, but throwing chairs at horses, breaking lockdown rules and waving placards around probably isnt it. Shame we're not in America because looting shops was acceptable for a few days, that'll show them.

I'm sure there are lots of white racists in the uk, I'm sure there's an undercurrant of overt racism present as a hangover from the 70's. I dont think this is the problem because theres no platform any more for racist acts. You can't mouth off at or throw bananas at black footballers without getting thoroughly exposed.

Lack of opportunities for black people? Yeah possibly a few clear cases. However a black 18 year old who has no private education, comes from Margate, and whose dad left the family home when he was 5, has more or less chance than a white 18 yo with the same background? I'd say much much closer than the "has to work ten times harder" dialogue I'm hearing. Could it be that due to historical racism and general poverty in black society, children and grandchildren of those families are just poor?

You knew that, UT knew that and I know that. But that's not what the over-simplistic message said. And going by the cult-like clapping on doorsteps and mass drop off in hospital attendance that's not what the population took from it either.

Well, as Sterling says, there are few black faces at or near the top in business on in football club boardrooms, though the Tories and TV news score highly on diversity, oddly enough.

Companies still ill equipped to deal with a crisis that has been going on for over three months now.

    Specifically Wickes.

Placed an order for delivery, 10 day wait which is to be expected and absolutely fine.

Given a delivery window of 7am to 7pm, delivery didn’t turn up.

Check email confirmation this morning, send an email to the address on there, get a bounce back saying they’re too busy to deal with emails and to call.

Try calling number, constantly engaged, eventually get through but whichever ever option I press sends me to some recorded message saying I can’t change my delivery... eventually get back through again and press an option that gets me to the next stage, currently 45 minutes on hold, with a repeated message just saying it will take at least a further 30 minutes from that point.

I get things taking longer and being out of stock, but by now there really isn’t an excuse for such piss poor customer service.

To be fair that's usual Wickes service for deliveries.

Back in the good old days when we were allowed to do stuff I ordered a couple of tonnes of chippings and sand. 7 day notice period I booked at least a couple of weeks in advance, everything confirmed, booked the holiday off to deal with it. The night before got a call.

    "It's Wickes"
"Hello" I Said, expecting it to be a call confirming delivery time the next day
    "Your order"
    "Yes thank you"
    "We haven't got it"
"Er, I'm sorry, It's been scheduled fro weeks and I;ve booked holiday"
    "We haven't got it"
"Have you got any of it" thinking I could do some of the work and my holiday wasn't wasted
"We've got the chippings we can deliver everythign on friday"
Considering this was sunday and I'd booked the whole week off to get the work done I kindly suggested that they could deliver as arranged and paid for on monday what they did have and follow up with the rest on Friday.
"You'll have to pay for the 2nd delivery"
"Er no, I don't think so, It's not my fault that I've paid for a service you can't complete."
He then hung up on me and refused to answer the phone when I called back, so I was left in limbo.
Half the delivery came the next day and the galling thing was the other stuff was on the truck but going to someone else. Friday came and went, no delivery of the remaining stuff.

To cut a very long story slightly shorter it took a lot of ranting in the store to get what I'd actually paid for and arranged.

Looking around other places are cheaper and don't beat the **** out of their goods in store so I go elsewhere now.

It was the sheer lack of ability for the chap on the phone to hold a conversation or understand what he should have done that amazed me. I ran call centres for 10 years, I know how hard the job is so don't give people a hard time but this was the worst example I'd ever experienced.

Yep, absolutely useless. After one hour and fifteen minutes they answered the phone, no apologies for the wait of course.

Ok we don’t know why your order didn’t arrive, we’ll email the branch and get them to contact you.

Ok so can I just cancel it? You can sir, but it could still arrive today. Ok, but you can’t tell me that? No as I said I’ll get the branch to contact you.

I could do with the stuff before the weekend so would rather not cancel it, so I just have to place blind faith in Wickes that they’ll turn up at some point today, and if they don’t spend another hour on the phone tomorrow to cancel it.

The people 2 doors down from me.

Had a massive extension year or two ago (their third in a decade) in doing so they removed a communal fence to access their back garden. The fence was ruined and so was the communal area that was used to access their garden. It took a huge amount of badgering to get the fence replaced by them "We have no money left" was the excuse yet their extension probably cost north of £40K.
They have point blank refused to get the communal area that was torn up repaired, this is being done on a voluntuary basis by others.

Constantly flouted the social distancing regs with BBQs and gatherings yet she was the one that was out checking up and down the road to see who was and wasn't clapping for carers.

    And they support QPR.

Don't give the driver hell , it won't be his fault. Generally they're very accommodating. It'll be the store at fault, Likely an 18 year old with no common sense or social skills. I also tend to cut people a bit of slack that are having to work at the moment.
My current nemesis is Homebase but I solved that one by marching into store with the stuff that they'd obviously played football with before delivering.

    Ebay.

    I'm taking the chance to get some stuff fixed around the house, and have time to do some shopping so I've bought quite a bit from Amazon and ebay. Out of the last 6 items from ebay;

PS4 controller is fake, Its a decent copy for sure, and probably worth nearly what I paid as an "unofficial controller" but I dont know if it will last. Item has now been removed, as I guess someone else reported it before me. There's 2 feedback items describing it as fake (were not there when I bought). Ebays return policy is odd, given they have multiple buyers saying its fake. I have to return the fake item (so they can start a new account and sell again no doubt) and trust the clearly unscrupulous seller to say it was returned and refund? I'm tempted to return to box only. That's if they even reply. I have to wait until 19th before I can claim off ebay, which I bet will not result in anything but "seller claims it's not fake guv".

Fish hooks, wrong size. But seller has just offered to post right size. Good work.

Plumbing 40mm wastepipe, marked in marker pen an area thats bent in! Will work for what I need but wtf. Its also slightly too small in diameter but again works for my requirement. I wouldn't plumb the washing machine in with it.

Special mention for some railway sleepers. Delivered for free (were admittedly a touch above standard price) 3 hours after I ordered. Cut as requested. Great job.

I try and steer clear of eBay where possible, had so many bad experiences as both a buyer and a seller.

Thought I’d dip my toe in with Airpods as was convinced I’d lose them, bought a ‘refurbished’ pair off eBay. It turns out they were both refurbished, but still faulty and fake, really bad fakes.

Also bought a capsule coffee machine off there that was faulty, it wouldn’t stop running. Returned it for a refund, bizarrely the seller decided to take a hammer to it and suggest that I’d damaged it. eBay refunded no problem.

A few weeks ago I ordered some wine glasses, two weeks later no sign, queried it and they just said here is the tracking number, pumped it into the royal mail site “we’re awaiting the item from the sender” went back to them, oh sorry Royal Mail have lost them... shall we send them again or do you want a refund? Can you send them again? They refunded me.

I also find when I sell the odd thing it’s fairly common for people to message and ask if I can post it to them by X date, I always say no I can’t because I don’t want to give them cause to complain of it doesn’t arrive by that time. They’ll often still buy the item yet still badger me about delivery.

The branch just called me to say they left me a voicemail ‘earlier on in the week’ to say they couldn’t fulfil the order and it had been cancelled.

They categorically did not leave me a message. That’s me learnt never to use them again anyway.

It's a bit of a drag but their (ebay and paypal) dispute resolution service is good and very fair. Mine went from "It was lost in the post - go through the post office..." to "I'm going to sue you for deformation (sic.)..." (from the seller) very quickly. I also go a couple of ebay messages from other buyers who had experienced problems with the same seller (ebay strongly advised me not to discuss anything with any of them). All for the sake of £7.99 (which I got back).

You have to follow their rules.

Not really. It's not the 'Germans' - it's the Major describing the WI cricket team and Fawlty waking up in hospital being treated by a non-honkey doctor both using terms that were pretty 'off' even then in the 70's. Incidently, ISTR that Cleese requested (he definitely OK'd them) the cuts for BBC broadcast (iplayer) a while ago and I *think* it's the Neflix/UKTV/streamed versions that were 'uncut'.

Slightly related to eBay but this was Amazon, although I find this happens a lot on eBay too. I recently bought something that didn’t arrive, so I chased them and they said “we’ll check with our distribution department” A week or so went by so I queried it again and they told me I had to chase it up with the post office! I went back to them and said this is unacceptable, you need to do that yourself or send me another one - nothing. So I left them a bad review, instantly apology and a new item posted straight out.

Then the begging started, we’ve rectified the situation so can you amend your review or delete it? Absolutely not, what good would that do you? You only acted because of the bad review, you won’t learn anything if I delete it and it won’t be fair on your other customers who you might decide to treat in the same way.

I have to say I buy a ridiculous amount of staff from amazon. I've always found them to be brilliant. Any request for a refund is approved very quickly and the working assumption seems to be that the customer is always right. Yesterday i sent back a garden wildlife camera which had cost £53. Refund requested in the morning, labels printed and item dropped off in the pm, email this morning to confirm the refund has been processed. My only gripe being some of the clearly fake product reviews posted where similar wording is used again and again often in broken english by Tom H, Mary R, Steve J, and refers to some obscure aspect of the product like "the batteries were very easy to insert" "I found no difficulty in inserting all batteries" "for me, inserting the batteries was very simple" "the batteries were inserted most easily"......
