Yes, we are also the club standing on the edge of the precipice when the games restart. We are nervously looking over our shoulder and AV and Muff will be chomping at the bit to get playing and get out of the bottom 3. After one game, if Muff do one goal better than us, we will be in the bottom 3 and the team relegated if the season then stops. We play Leciester going for a champs league spot and Muff play CP. We have got to get our players playing and our heads right before the restart.

Yes I think I’ve gone full circle with it now (or 180?)

From a personal point of view I want the season and voided, no promotion no relegation.

The reality is there is a lot of money at stake and sky/bt the PL and significant portion of clubs are naturally going to pursue a restart until such point that it becomes impossible to do so. Although that may be disappointing to many of us, is it really any surprise and not to be expected?

People who can’t work from home have been told to return to work. Many if not most of the businesses are not ‘essential’, if you work in a mattress factory as an example, is that ‘essential’? Yes, you can in theory observe social distancing while at work, but you don’t know which of your colleagues has got the virus.

Footballers won’t be able to observe social distancing from each other, but they will know with pretty much 99.9% certainty that those you cannot observe social distancing with do not have the virus. Which situation would you honestly prefer or feel safer with?

Even if they didn’t have the testing the virus is now at very low levels, with less than 1% of those you will be playing with and against likely to have it.

I think every player needs to have the mindset that play will resume and approach the situation as such

Well if they end up using the PPG method and our record is worse than it is now, or other teams are better then we go down.

  6. Burnsy

But it was spoken more as fact that that’s what they would be doing should it be stopped again - where has that been agreed?

  7. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

It hasn’t, but you would assume that if football does return then what happens if it has to be curtailed will be agreed and voted upon. Given it’s been made clear that whatever happens there has to be promotion and relegation, and every other league has used a PPG formula, you have to assume that’s what will be agreed upon.

So if it does restart and some of our players heads aren’t right then we’re at huge risk of going down. We now have everything to lose, whereas the teams below us have nothing to lose if we do have a restart.

I have to agree with this. Right now we are just about safe from relegation, as long as we do not play anymore games.

However, as soon as we start playing again, with no guarantee of the season finishing, we are in an extremely vulnerable position.

I suspect Villa v Sheff Utd will be given top priority as the first game. If Villa win that then we’re in the drop zone.

Even if they draw or lose, I suspect our first match will be Leicester away, instead of Leicester at home as it should be. It will be a much harder task playing Leicester in the first game at a neutral venue then it would have been at home in front of our fans, where we’ve done particularly well under Pearson.

If we restart then we have to play out the entire season. If we only play a couple of games before they decide to void the season then I think we’ll probably be unlucky.

Where is it said that we would revert back to today's table ? If they have 2 or 3 more games to go on, surely they would use that more complete table or use it for an updated PPG ?

Nothing will be able to resume without precise rules as to what happens if the season has to be curtailed, so nobody will be able to complain because it will have been agreed in advance. The season couldn’t possibly restart without that being the case.

How they reach that agreement and if they do is another question, but realistically assuming they do then it will be a PPG system that settles it.

My understanding is promotion and relegation is not off the cards yet for for any EFL clubs.

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/sport/amp/football/52758193

League Two had been curtailed, however they have requested no relegation but that has yet to be decided by the EFL... at least that’s my interpretation.

The FA have said there must be promotion and relegation to and from the PL, and have a veto over any rule changes. That said it’s not clear how that works with voiding a season because no rules are changing.

But assuming football restarts, it would be impossible to restart without clubs knowing the process in the event of a curtailment. To remove relegation would require a change to the rules which presumably the FA would veto. So it would have to be decided on PPG (like the EFL)

I can’t see how football would restart without the threat of relegation either, otherwise the vast majority of the remaining games would be pointless friendlies.

As I already pointed out it does come across as a bit of a dig at Troy, but it's a completely valid one.

It's no surprise though that Talks***e, who Troy is now rumoured to be joining as a presenter, have rushed to defend him and put down Cleverley's remarks.

I don't mind our exchanges, I just thought your comment was a bit odd in the context of what you'd said just a short while before. Feel free to continue though whenever you like, however confused or contradictory your posts may appear.

If anyone is interested this was in the Times as to this week's plan for "Project re-start:

    Copied from another site:

    - PL will not require players to be quarantined in a hotel before games resume

    - Games expected to restart on 19 June "or more likely 26 June"

    - Vote this Wednesday re whether to resume contact training

    - Further meeting this Thursday to discuss:

    1) Exact date for restart
    2) TV scheduling
    3) Procedure to decide outcome of league if season curtailed

    - Issue of whether relegation should be scrapped expected to be raised "but it looks unlikely to win widespread support"

Really? I thought the PL cut any oversight from the FA when it stopped being the FA's PL....

One thing which is quite interesting and possibly reassuring for us is that the 2 rounds of Bundesliga games so far appear to have generally continued the form of the 4 rounds previous; the break in the season and behind closed doors doesn't seem to have had much of an impact on the expected results coming to pass:

Of the few results which on the face of it may appear unusual they were generally either a good team losing to a top team (e.g. Wolfsburg losing to Dortmund, and Monchengladbach losing to Leverkusen, or one team in terrible form winning against another team in terrible form, e.g. Augsburg vs Schalke). The only mildly freakish result may have been Bremen's win away at Freiburg.

It is too soon to tell whether the lack of fans has had much of an impact in reducing home advantage though.

Were we to take 4 games as the cut-off point for the PL, and assume that form should generally continue here as well, it should spell continued trouble for Bournemouth and Villa (and perhaps Brighton):

Then again, none of the BL teams have had their captain refuse to play, so it remains to be seen how that will pan out.

The only other thing we'd have to be wary of is if Liverpool win all their first 3 games, including away at City, to clinch the title, and so maybe take their foot off the gas for their 4th game which is at home to Villa - the BL still has a title to play for, and the longer Pool go without clinching it would be of benefit to us fixture wise.

Mainly yes but the FA retained control on promotion/relegation to stop the PL becoming a ‘closed shop’.

Part of that was they retained the ability to veto any rule changes so that the PL couldn’t pull the drawbridge up at a later date. It was widely reported in the news a couple of weeks ago, and they have specifically said they will block any attempt to scrap promotion and relegation.

I said "so it remains to be seen how that will pan out", i. e. whether Troy will actually return or not.

Crikey, and no surprise Burnsy also 'like' d your post - it seems he'll throw his weight behind absolutely anything which favours his personal bias without giving it a second thought, even when said thing has no sense or evidence behind it.

I don't think the EPL will scrap relegation but they should if the season is not completed.

The FA may have the ability to block rule changes on paper but, in reality the money, and therefore the balance of power, is all with the Premier League. I'm sure the FA would back down if there was any confrontation over this.

It’s going to depend on how these votes are formatted, it’s not clear to me at least how something gets put on the agenda to be voted on in the first place, or how. Are there two options and you have to vote for one or the other? Or can you vote no for both and then there is a stalemate and nothing happens?

If there was a straight vote on no relegation then I don’t see why anyone else other then the current bottom 6 would vote to get rid of it, but again it all depends on how any vote is structured.
