I was exaggerating to make a point. But of the 35k that have died from Covid how many are <30 year old footballers?

As of last week, there were 60 men between the ages of 20-34 who had died of or with coronavirus in the UK - though most of them were not fit enough to play football.

I don’t really see how Prenetics and the premier league can claim that the testing is not affecting the NHS just because the tests are privately sourced. Surely it’s an issue of capacity regardless of where the tests are sourced from and available tests should deployed to where there will have the most clinical benefit.

Germany has done over a million more tests than us and those tests have been provided through private companies such as Bosch. We’re just about hitting the 100000 tests a day target. . How can they justify that limited testing capacity should be prioritised for premier league footballers irrespective of where it is sourced and that the quality of the testing is superior I work in the NHS and the last I heard it was taking 5 days for test results, I know someone in an ICU who was waiting a week or more which defeats the purpose. Yet Prenetics are aiming to turn it round in 48 hours or even quicker.

I wonder if the fan from Burnley and other clubs so desperate for their clubs to get their TV money to pay their players inflated wages will be out on their doorsteps tonight clapping for the NHS?

Surely it’s a valid question to ask why the NHS is taking 5 days to get results when the Premier League can get it done in 48 hours?

    - are premier league paying more?
    - are NHS doing the tests themselves but less efficiently?
    - are NHS using a weaker private company?
    - extra layers of bureaucracy?

Don’t know the answer - might just be that premier league can pay inflated prices for an express service. However NHS should be able to use their large scale buying power to improve times (if they are doing externally).

  6. If there is are private companies out there able to turn around tests in 48 hours its disgusting they didn’t offer their capacity to the NHS

They should be named and shamed

I assume it will be largely to do with issues of logistics and scaling up.

Tests will be taken at one of twenty training grounds at roughly the same time, and probably delivered straight to a single lab via a courier. It’s a relatively simple process.

In the NHS you have a huge range of tests coming from around a hundred thousand people a day, from all over the country. It’s an entirely different challenge. Scaling up saves cost, but doesn’t make the logistics more simple.

Isn't it most likely down to far fewer samples to test and less public sector red tape?

  9. lowerrous

Perhaps they did but the NHS couldn't afford it? Or the NHS had to stick to their preferred suppliers?

Private healthcare in the UK will have existed for longer than the NHS, what's the cause of shame?

Of course things can change, summer may start to kill off the virus and there might not be a second wave.

However, as it stands, players are being punished for being careful around the virus (when they have family members who are vulnerable), in a non-essential industry. It seems illogical.

I get why the league wants to continue, as they will lose out on vast swathes of revenue and they're desperate for Liverpool to win the league. However if the situation here doesn't drastically improve, then it seems just as, if not more, unfair to continue with the season, as it does to void it/ end it on a PPG basis.

I wondered about the ‘summer’ thing as well. But I’ve read plenty of articles quoting people from countries that have far more hot and humid conditions than us that say we shouldn’t believe hot weather will have a huge impact.

It's getting serious now that a Chelsea player has refused to train. This will cause great concern in the corridors of power at Lancaster Gate.

I can’t see summer making a difference. With flu the R0 is such that the shift in behaviour when the weather gets warmer (not all stuffed inside with the central heating on and windows closed) is enough to put it below one and it dies out to low enough levels. With Covid it would still be well above one even with that behaviour shift.

You’re right it is a valid question you ask. Ultimately the NHS and government in general lack the efficiencies of the private sector in many aspects and the reasons for this are probably well documented elsewhere,

The times I quoted are from a few weeks back in NHS NW London so the testing situation may well have improved. There is also variability from region to region. I spoke to someone this morning who said that testing at Frimley Park (Surrey) is within 48 hours.

Irrespective of the validity of the question my point still stands that it does not make sense to claim that the testing for premiership players does not impact on the NHS and wider society, given that there re finite resources.

It doesn’t though, see the article above. The machines the PL use are readily available and the NHS can buy them if they so wish. It would however be a fairly inefficient way for them to go about testing because it takes 2.5 hours to do one test... they could in theory buy thousands upon thousands of machines, but the man hours and admin it would take to operate them all would again not make it worthwhile. The thousands and thousands of machines the NHS would in theory ultimately need is not impacted in by the relatively small number the PL need to test just 750 people.

I don't think there has been any suggestion of players being punished for being careful. There have been suggestions that players who don't want to play should go on furlough instead, but I don't think that can be called punishment.

The Guardian article dates from 30 April and I suspect - although I do not know - that the Premier League are now taking a different approach because they have contracted Prenetics (at a cost of around £4 million) to carry out the tests.

"I can categorically say that the testing we're undertaking, the process we're undertaking from everything related to PPE [personal protective equipment] to the swabs to the actual laboratory analytical process, is not taking away from NHS resources at all," Avi Lasarow, Prenetics Chief Executive, told Sky Sports News.
"We work with UK-accredited laboratories, within our consortium, and the capacity which is being made available for employers to take testing for their employees, does not impinge whatsoever on NHS capability."
Prenetics, and its group associates and suppliers, are also conducting tests for NHS England and the Bundesliga in Germany.
"The end-to-end process is up to 48 hours. Of course, one strives to do that sooner," says Lasarow. "When it comes to testing generally, one always wants to strive to test and turnaround results as fast as possible. Certainly, from our company perspective, when we're working with employers generally, we anticipate having results available within 48 hours."
    https://www.skysports.com/football/...sting-causing-no-strain-on-nhs-says-prenetics

Prenetics chief executive Avi Lasarow told Sportsmail that their tests were approximately 98.8 per cent accurate - in line with those conducted by the NHS. That means, of every 800, an average of nearly 10 tests would return false negatives or positives.

If they are absolutely adamant that they are doing PPG, then surely it has to be weighted otherwise you are taking no notice at all of the advantage playing at home gives you?!

If clubs are so adamant they won’t play at neutral venues because it eliminates home advantage, surely they have to employ the same rationale to a vote on PPG.
