Both simply amazing pieces of work from start to finish.
But am heavily playing both imagine Dragons and Bastille on spotify lately. No particular album but both have produced some damn fine tracks.

The Beatles - Sergeant Pepper
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Jimi Hendrix - Best Of

Or any number of Best Ofs of those artists, not to mention Bernstein's recording of Berlioz' Grande Messe des Mortes, Blomstedt's recording of the Nielsen symphonies, Giulini's Marriage of Figaro ....

The Stranglers (obvs) - Any of Rattus, Black & White or The Raven
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life
Sigur Ros - Takk
David Bowie - Either of Hunky Dory or Outside
The Cure - Disintegration

Ask me tomorrow and you'd get a different list, although these would always be up there somewhere.

The thing to judge is not a few individual tracks but whether, like in the old days, you could drop the needle and listen until the run-out groove.

 

Agreed. The flow of an album from start to finish is a key aspect of its essence, its quality. Greatest hits compilations might be good to listen to because of familiarity, but they are unavoidably shallow.

 

That's why Attack of the Grey Lantern by Mansun is an outstanding album as all tracks flow in the next seamlessly, it wouldn't be possible to enjoy as much if 'shuffle' was selected.

I agree with you with Greatest Hits albums, and shouldn't really be allowed in a list of best albums. I think they work well for people who like some of a band's stuff without being too in to it.

 

I do love that Mansun LP as well. I think i'll give it a spin later!

 

OK I take back my Liquid Gold "Greatest hits" and replace it with Liquid Gold "Best of".
Love that Mansun album too.

 

I see your point, but it's good to track the evolution of bands that produced a lot of great numbers over several years.
