Why are you making personal attacks on me, and getting all political again in this thread?

I have been clear from the start that I did not know what was best with any certainty, but I have backed the lockdown nevertheless. This is only different from you in that you think you know all the answers.

And if you are "frustrated precisely because certain people won’t drop their grievances and prejudices and work together", then maybe you should complain to the unions who have publicly told their members not to cooperate in getting our kids back to school, rather than me.

Interesting. Our daughter’s primary is a 125 year old Victorian building, so I totally understand any major works needed to keep children separate would take a long time planning. But that’s not the reason given. In fact the headteacher cited the fact the government won’t confirm until 28 May whether the 5 tests have been met meaning they'd have too short notice to react by 1 June. I’m not sure if it was just a poorly worded sentence but surely that’s the point of these three weeks? Prepare to open on 1 June and then if the government says to wait, wait.

I think the consensus has to be around the word "safe". What does that mean?

Some teachers and schools have accepted that total 100% safety cannot be achieved and interpret it to mean as safe as we can make it, as safe as possible with reasonable precautions. They think a degree of risk is acceptable in getting kids back to school.

Others are holding out for 100% safety, or are not declaring what compromises they will accept, and that creates a stalemate very similar to what happens with a pay rise negotiation. Expectation or requests that the government should make "written" declarations of what creates a "safe" school, when every school is different is actually quite nonsensical, and also just leaves the tax-payer open to legal challenges and compensation claims.

I agree. Surely it’s like any other business - you get everything in place now, assuming you’ll get a green light to open in June? It’s not as if the social distancing measures needed are a sudden curve ball that weren’t expected. And, with only limited year groups returning initially, surely that frees up extra space?

I wasn't talking to you. I was explaining to another poster why I had replied to your post, which in turn was you making a response to a non-political comment of mine. Maybe @Otter and @Jumbolina would care to read the thread before joining in.

Teachers union on the radio yesterday completely in agreement that it is about risk management and not 100% safety.

re. teacher/pupil safety; not all schools have been closed due to vulnerable and key worker children having access to places of learning throughout the lockdown.

Surely some guidelines were used in these instances and teachers/parents/unions were reassured enough for the schools to stay open.

I realise phased opening will mean more pupils going through the doors than are currently attending but are there any figures or reports of infections from schools which have remained open?

If we were allowed to carry guns, our kids would already be back at school.

I’d hazard a guess attendance numbers have been too low for them to learn any lessons. The government expected given the wide definition of key workers pupil attendance would be around 20% of normal. It was actually 2%!

It's been a shitshow for days here now. People ran right back out to bars etc. the moment it was struck down. Perhaps 1 in every 30 people you see out are wearing facemasks, if that, and everywhere public is packed.

It's mindblowing that a significant percentage of the population don't seem to have realised that the reason to stay home isn't because of the order, it's because it stops the spread of the virus.

Only good news is some counties/cities have maintained localised orders. There have one in place in Milwaukee County, and others have followed in that vein. Unfortunately I think my employer is going to want me back to work soon. The HR department just moved back on site last week, and they moved one of the receptionists back too. Doesn't bode well for the rest of us.

We've already had four confirmed cases at work and every time they've had to call in professional cleaning services to sterilize the building, so I can't understand why they'd want to have anyone on site who doesn't need to be there. I'm hoping the sensible option prevails here, but I don't think I'm going to be that lucky.

An embarrassing bunch of morons. One has to feel for the police having to deal with these idiots. Latest conspiracy. Pharmaceutical companies are with holding vaccines in order to boost the price of it when they are made available.

Yep. The protestors showed no respect whatsoever for the Police being allowed social distance.

It may be in the future the police need to allow these loon spuds to just stand there and yap on until they have finished. Still it was good to see @Lloyd kept on ranting until the end when they finally carted him away.

Piers Morgan repeating over and over again that the "excess deaths" numbers across Europe are now well known, and that the UK have the worse.

I don't think that is true, and that Morgan is just lying.

I believe France, for example, have not even added in the know CV deaths in the community in the published numbers yet, and they aren't expected until June. The excess numbers are even further behind.

Correct me, if I am wrong.

  31. Jumbolina

I think the point of excess deaths is you don’t need to determine cause of death? It’s just excess over historical average.

  32. It’s blindingly obvious even to a simpleton that unless every country records and publishes data in the same way then comparisons are meaningless.

There will be 3rd world countries incapable of producing any meaningful figures at all.

Even if it were possible, comparing by country is still too broad, and better done I think by hotspots.

That will have more value in understanding if the system failed, why, and what to do about it.

Morgan is all that is wrong with media today. All they are interested in is being first with the ‘gotcha’. The news of yesteryear was light years better.

Jumbolina has explained the reason as to why 'excess mortality' is a better way to measure the damage caused by a medical crisis. This data from the Economist (which was updated on May 12th) may be helpful if people wish to check what Piers Morgan has claimed.

Looking at that you'd have to think the Italian will be propelled ahead of us again once their stattos catch up. So far they've only provided figures to 31 March (compared to 1 May here) and only 48% of excess deaths have been attributed to Covid-19, which seems low as a proportion.

  35. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

Yes, thanks, I saw that site and agree that it does throw some light on it. But what they make clear, to back up what LTC says above, the stats are based on different methodology and times scales. Italy's numbers are only to the end of March, for example.

    Oh well.
