Ways To End The Season Fairly

To be fair, with the new relaxations it’s contradictory anyway. We can now go outside for unlimited exercise and meet one other person from another household, we can sit in the park if we want as long as we remain two metres apart from the one other person not from our household. Realistically if they so wished people could gather outside grounds, remain safe and fall within the current guidelines.

I’ve no idea who would want to do this, but realistically it’s not really outside the current rules to do it. If people decided to do it, out in the open and full public view they would be very easy to prepare for, to spot and to move on.

Given that we’re told the greatest risk of transmission is not out in the open, but in enclosed spaces such as households, surely a far harder if not impossible thing to police (and a much much higher risk of spread) is friends/family gathering in each other’s homes to watch the games together? Especially with important title deciding games etc?

So given the recent changes to the lockdown, isn’t the whole neutral venue thing a massive red herring and completely missing the wood for the trees anyway?

Apparently we have been told that we can play whenever we like. Just us and Blyth Spartans.

    @dsr I assume you’ve read this?
States ‘over half’ of the clubs have asked the Govt to remove the neutral grounds stipulation. Now, we don’t know for sure, but law of averages likely has Burnley as one of those at an educated guess...

I think it is outside the guidelines. As congregating outside a sports stadium is clearly a mass gathering.

Yes, technically everyone could say they are just passing on their daily exercise with a mate - but it’s clearly not going to be true and people really shouldn’t need such guidelines explained to them in that circumstance.

Barclays took security in September over our TV rights-no mention of loan amount. XXIII Capital are still showing as having security so one could guess they still have the £70m loan mentioned in a note to our accounts up until end of June 19.

Here is an article on XXIII Capita; from last November-it mentions us/Pozzos

Yes I agree, but technically if you decided to meet a mate outside the ground, it would be a lot safer than meeting in their home. By the time games actually get underway again lockdown will have in theory been relaxed further as well. If you’re not allowed to congregate outside the ground, or visit a mates house, why are people more likely to do one over the other, when one is going to be easy to enforce and the other isn’t?

It seems to me to an extent they’re barking up the wrong tree. Putting football on full stop is likely to result in people congregating in each other’s homes, which is high risk and more or less impossible to stop.

It's not the desire to play on neutral grounds that I object to. It's the reasonably specific threat to torpedo any other plans that I don't like. But as I said earlier, IF it was just a negotiating position and they intend to play whether they can get home grounds or not, then that's different.

But if you do get the right to play at home and away, don't then follow up with a complaint about Burnley's changing rooms. You may need to change in shifts or book another facility if you want to maintain social distancing.

Because there are far more sensible places that are neither your mates house or a football stadium? The current advice isn’t suggesting the best place to watch a football match - so it’s pointless reading it as if it is.

Where has anybody threatened to ‘torpedo’ plans outside of voicing fears about neural grounds?

I’m not requesting your reading between the lines of what’s been said. Please post a link where any person from any PL club has said they will ‘torpedo’ any plan put forward...

You better go investigate who the other clubs that objected to neutral grounds and get on their forums to complain you oddball

I am sure our players will be well used to playing at Turf Moor tbf.

If not sure Pearson will tell them what to expect !

Didn't Duxbury say in repsect of the neutral ground issue that he couldn't vote against his shareholders' interests? I would have thought that constitutes a threat to torpedo the proposal. But obviously he didn't specifically say he would vote against it no matter what, so his options are still open.

I know it’s not and its not what I’m suggesting, but if people are so stupid that they’d gather at the ground when the game was on, if it was at a neutral venue then what would they do instead? Idiots are idiots surely.

No. He didn’t say that. Or even allude to it. So quite where you’ve got that interpretation from, I’ve no idea.

Wouldn't it be fairly simple for most PL clubs to just erect temporary barriers on matchdays around the stadiums? With Watford for example there'd only be a few houses on Vicarage Road that would be inside the restricted area. I guess eastward Vicarage Road access for the hospital may still be required.

Tbh it's only really Liverpool fans they have got to worry about or West Ham's as they like a protest.

Cannot see any other set of fans causing real trouble.

By then it might be a bit of a free for all travel wise anyway with social distancing stll on.

Surely there must be some derbies still to be played? Can’t see everyone sitting at home for a North London Derby for instance...

Might not mean much though really.

Why on earth would anybody gather at the ground for Liverpool vs Everton and actually miss it on TV?

Whoever they are they need eliminating from the gene pool anyway.

  21. Of course this is only the first hurdle, clubs will need their medical insurance providers to okay the plan or it’s no way Jose, no one is going to risk £200m in player assets

When we won the league there were **** loads of people outside the ground. Baffling. No screens, no chance of getting in, no beer, pissed down with rain all day and tortured by the noise of people in the ground having the time of their lives.

100% people would still gather outside of Anfield though. We’re talking scousers here.

Well said Otter, I'm glad some people are taking note of what the government actually says about things, and not just ignoring what they don't want to hear.

You seem to be forgetting one thing in all this mate!

Just how much value do you put on peoples health and life? Not a lot it would seem as playing football seems far more important to you from what you have been saying :(

I wonder what would have happened if there had been a nuclear war. Would football have still been expected to continue?

Not pay a bill, it's rather that they would receive less money for completing the season from TV revenues than originally stipulated in the deals due to them not having been able to fulfil certain obligations of those deals such as timing and dates of matches, and them being behind closed doors.

The article states that the clubs will only receive about £450mil (about £22.5mil each) instead of what would have been the full amount of £762mil (about £38mil each).

Interesting quote: " it has led to at least one of that number questioning why the efforts to complete the season ought to continue" - for a few of the clubs it may well be that the effort and risk isn't worth the only additional £20mil or so it would bring in (taking away additional admin costs, which could even whittle the figure down even more).

I'm surprised though that this loss in TV revenue seems so set in stone according to the article - I'd have thought that there could be room for the PL to go back to the rights holders and state that if they don't receive the full originally received amount that they will deem it not possible to restart the season and they'd get no football to show at all. It's not as if it is the PL's fault that they have been unable to fulfil the terms as originally stipulated.

Danny Rose doesn't seem too keen on starting again..

Not sure he is getting many supporters though in the sense he is a "well paid footballer " so " should get on with it "

Where do you stand on such a stance ?

To be fair, I enjoyed the away trip I did to Burnley a few years back despite a 1.0 defeat. Cant remember the name of the Indian restaurant we went to but amazing Naan bread.

You're right. It was the staff and players whose self-interest he was determined to protect, not the shareholders. So the same point is there - that he would look after Watford at the expense of all else..

"Critics will say my position is founded on self-interest and they would be absolutely right. I have a duty to protect my club and the people employed by it, some of whom have worked for Watford Football Club for more than 20 years and dedicated their lives to it."
