Covid-19 Virus

  1. Plainly not. Stupid people don't know that they are stupid (as is patently obvious from this forum)

TBF you're not alone. The new speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, is supposedly furious that they're making these announcements on a Sunday and not in Parliament...

Hoyle mentioned it in PMQs and asked Johnson politely if in future he wouldn't half mind telling the house first. Johnson didn't reply.

    'Furious'.

I assume you’re being deliberately facetious as usual, but I’ll humour you with a reply anyway.
    1. All supermarkets have set times put aside for those in the most vulnerable groups
    2. My town, like most, has a very well publicised and well organised volunteer programme to get supplies for those who are staying at home. I am one of the volunteers and am matched with a lovely old lady who I shop for whenever she needs me to.
    3. As I’m sure you realise, but chose to ignore in your reply, my point wasn’t that the older customers shouldn’t be there - it was that it was slightly ironic that they seemed to be completely ignoring the social distance guidelines once in the store.

In fact it would be best not to talk about it. Deny it the oxygen of publicity it craves or have its voice played by an actor.

You said in your first post - "The older clientele, many of whom I’m not even sure are supposed to be there at all."

You've now changed it to - "my point wasn’t that the older customers shouldn’t be there".

It was your point, now it isn't. Call me facetious all you want but don't backtrack and get personal in an attempt to cover over your opinion.

How do you stay alert ?

Watch out for anyone coughing or sneezing ?

  13. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Yes. Everyone can go out now as long as we don't get within 2m of each other. We can travel as far as we want (in England only), for as long as we want as long as we don't see anyone else. Bigger fines if you break a rule that they've hardly fined anyone for.

Also, we can all go to work but not use public transport.

Everyone everywhere else other than England still has to stay in. Sorry. Losers.

And you'll be in quarantine (possibly) if you come into the country by plane.

My advice if you're feeling unwell is to get the ferry here because they'll wave you through like the King of Caractacus.

So the government is relying on the general public to have common sense.

Other than the off putting sight of Boris staring at the autocue above the camera rather than directly at the camera, I thought that was all clear. Construction and trades back to work and we can travel to sunbathe or sit in the park rather than being obliged to ‘exercise’.

The methodology seems fine, a graduating system of alert levels that guide us through lifting the lockdown. That is useful, obvious even.

The problem they will have is selling it to people, founded on the Government’s day to day incompetence and its inability to avoid playing tricksy. It’s a measure of Boris’s ability to lie to your faces that he talks of a ‘four nation’ effort. He has clearly done nothing of the sort and has acted like this to wrong foot the devolved nations. It’s acting in bad faith.

And the whole thing is lacking in detail (face coverings, workplace risk assessing?), detail/openness about the app, vague with strategies conflicting. Do more, go places, but face greater fines. For what? Can you see your elderly parents? I guess with social distancing...but what does that now entail? A planned return, but actually for some of you that’s in about 12 hours. Furlough? Don’t take public transport, we like bikes, but go on take the car etc.

A start, but the inconsistencies risk an increase in the R number and progress towards a new normal.

Had he put it like UEA did it would have been a lot better, but we had to have his rhetorical flourishes.

Might have been nice if he'd mentioned the elderly and at-risk groups. Or did I miss it?

Maybe he thinks they're all dead.

This is something most of the people I know have been doing already anyway. Most of them go out on their bikes all day and sit somewhere and have a picnic.

Towards the end of last week and over the weekend some friends from six different households started to congregate at one of their houses. They all live in the same area, but up to now they’d not done it. I know that isn’t in the changes anyway, but across the people I know everyone has started to push the boundaries anyway.

BBC says a 50ish page government document explaining what the lockdown looks like now in England after Boris’ speech will be published tomorrow.

I’m still struggling to understand some of the timings the government is employing. Why isn’t that guidance ready to go the minute Boris goes off air?

One theory is that Cummings works on the basis of critics left gnashing their teeth. So the devolved Govt’s are left high and dry by decisions made without consultation and then the Government explains more and says look don’t they look silly? Of course we had a plan.

Why do we have to wait until Wednesday to be able to spend more time outside. What's happening on Monday and Tuesday?

Are fleets of converted Mr Whippy vans being sent out over the next two days & nights with massive nets made from a secret stockpile of PPE equipment. Fully kitted out agents swooping up that pesky Covid-19 and dumping it into care homes, sorry... I mean landfill sites.

I think I'll just continue to stay in after Wednesday. Get my food once a week and try to figure out who or what is making those odd scratching sounds in the basement.

Yes I thought the same. Headlines and themes yesterday, details to follow this week. Much as I don't rate him I don't see that there's much to criticise unless you are one of those desperately looking to pick a hole for political reasons e.g. he didn't say don't use public transport he said avoid it if you can.

Well, Boris didn't mention mass gatherings in Hyde Park in his speech last night, and he has removed the "stay at home" bit from the slogan, that must mean that Boris doesn't want us to stay at home, and we can go to Hyde Park if we want as long as I wear my sunglasses. Up yer bum Boris, that'll teach yer not to give us some clarity!

Looks like we’ll all be booking holidays to France then. Not sure why that country should be exempt over others.

I have found this to be the case without question. Not just in the supermarket, but when out for a walk, the people who don't take a step and walk single file on their side of the pathway, but instead pass within a whisker of my family, who are all obviously keeping over as far as we can, are all in their 70s or older.

In Tesco, they are the ones who are walking the wrong way down the aisle, leaning in over my shoulder to grab something off the shelf, shopping in pairs, standing in the middle of the aisle in a daze or on the phone.

I'm also pretty sure they are the same people who go onto Facebook later that day to rant about seeing a family sitting in a field for a 'non-essential' rest during a walk.

use the dedicated time slots for vulnerable people, to avoid coming into contact with others at peak time? Use delivery slots, which people have been leaving open for them? Not walk right down the middle of the aisle, right in my grill?

The people who get on my wick the most whilst shopping are those that just stand there for a minute or so deciding what they want to buy. Surely at this stage they should have an idea what they want rather than stand there like gormless idiots and making an already bad situation worse.

I do think these changes actually make a lot of sense at this point. Get everyone back to work who can’t work from home, seems sensible. Also the biggest risk of the virus spreading is in enclosed spaces with sustained contact, households, pubs, care homes etc. Realistically people will only be gathered outside of the weather is good and in that situation if they stay 2 metres apart and don’t gather in large groups from lots of different households the risk of spread is very low. With any luck it’s minimal enough to keep the R0 below one and that means another three weeks of cases coming down while at the same time allowing a bit of relaxation. As long as people use their brains and don’t take the piss then it should be fine at this stage.

    The trouble is that old folks are;
1/ Set in their ways and very reliant on habits. If they are used to going shopping at 2pm of Thursdays, that's what they will do.
2/ Hopeless with technology - my mother doesn't use email and can barely use a pc. Book a home delivery for her and she forgets and chooses then to go out.
3/ Slower to process info - hence the taking ages to get what they want in a shop, walking the wrong way, standing trance-like
4/ Forgetful so can't be relied on not to touch things and to wash their hands.
