I've just spent two magical hours listening to my favourite. He isn't the loudest, he may not be the best technically (tbh I wouldn't know), but to me he is the best.

    Mark Knopfler

I don't think I could listen to two solid hours, concentrating on the guitar, without being at least slightly bored, from any other guitarist.

I've seen him live twice and one of the things I like about him is he just plays everything like the original, without too many theatrics. He understands that moments in favourite songs mean a lot to some people.

    Brilliant.

    Any others?

  2. Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow) must be up there. Also Jimmy Page (Led Zep).

  3. Richard Thompson.

Although it does pain me to admit it, Mark Knopfler is fantastic. I thought ZZ was going to come up with someone cheesy like Brian May.

The guitarists I play with both rate Joe Bonamassa, but I place musicality over technical brilliance.

I resisted the temptation to suggest Billy Gibbons.
I listened to all Clapton's stuff, still got most of it. He is great, but in my view just not the versatility and musicality of Knopfler.

I'm afraid I just don't appreciate Hendrix's stuff, probably my bad, but just too noisy for me. Although I really liked the Isley Brothers, who played with Hendrix for years, and they were brilliant musicians, and just far more palatable to my more mellow taste in music. They were one of the few black groups that made their mark in those days through their musical brilliance rather what was the typical stand-in-a-line and sing and dance in time, which I am sure hid their talents.

The Smith's would send me to sleep, and so I probably struggled to appreciate Marr, and Beck just didn't leave a mark on me, but in both cases that is probably down to my ignorance of their talent rather than an informed opinion.

Not saying I liked any of them particularly, or in some cases at all, but Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, Marr are the names often quoted when people discuss the greatest ever guitarist so i thought I'd throw them out there.

Yes, hadn't heard of him til I saw him on Later with Jools Holland. Amazing guitar solos on that show but like you, not really my type of music.

Not necessarily the best but what I liked being a child of the eighties then Slash, Joe Perry and Kirk Hammett amongst others.

Also a big fan of Lindsey Buckingham:

Certainly one of the most influential; Bo Diddly - His shuffling beat is a sound instantly recognisable from countless other songs.

Easily in the top four Fleetwood Mac guitarists of all time, behind Green, Kirwan and Spencer.

Jimmy Page, although known for Zeppelin was also one of the most prolific session guitarists of the 1960s.

Hard to epitomise his sound but this is one of my favourite pieces of his and it's not even canonical

And this is Robert Johnson, who wrote the above and who was alleged to have sold his soul to the devil for his guitar talent.

For me it's down to 3 and i'm basing this on them being able to sing and play guitar at the same time.

    Kurt Cobain
    James Dean Bradfield
    Chuck Berry

Clapton is horribly overrated, he made a career from the Pentatonic scale and never developed. Knopfler's ok, but he's a single line player because his picking style makes it difficult to solo over an octave.

For me, the best guitarists are:

    Django Reinhardt
Bireli Lagrene (arguably the best ever)
    Wes Montgomery

Steve Lukather is severely underrated, Steve Vai is technically very however he sacrifices tone for speed - he just wants to shred.

Joe Bonnamassa is fantastic so is Joe Pass.

Personally, my guitar god is Gary Moore, no one will ever match his tone and emotion.

The problem is you can never tell how good a guitarist is because these days many use effects (distortion, overdrive, crunch) to cover bad technique and mistakes and will never play clean.

If you want the best guitarists, the jazz guitarists knock spots off everyone. The old adage is:

A rock guitarist will play 4 chords in front of 30,000 people, a jazz guitarist will play 30,000 chords in front of 4 people.

Comes down simply to who you like too. I love the sound of Dave Gilmour’s guitar and the Edge’s (though U2 haven’t held any interest for decades).

For the whole playing/writing/singing thing, this guy Chris Cheney is great.
