Whereabouts are you, approximately, for you to have noticed such a difference?

    Harsh thresholds are often unfair.

I’m thinking bad news for TV presenters, stand-up comedians and dentists.

Grim milestone as the number of dead in the last 24 hrs has increased by 115. Had a bit of vain hope it might not reach more than 100, but it wasn’t ever likely.

The death figures are up to 5pm yesterday to be precise. The lower figure yesterday was apparently down to a change in period the NHS reports the death count for.

Previously it was up to 9am that morning. Yesterday was 9am to 5pm on 24 March. The figures this evening are through to 5pm on 25 March.

Well quite a few successful companies. 50k isn’t exactly knocking the lights out anyway is it? Just about getting by after tax.

Given the payment is capped and they claim only 5% are above 50k trading profit then they might as well pay all. There will be lots of previously successful businesses that now have zero revenue. Did they restrict the help for the employed. Were 60k earner not eligible?? (Don’t know the answer to that).

I’m not self employed by the way.

This might be quite interesting to follow, for those interested in how Covid-19 deaths stack up against normal weekly mortality figures.

    https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/england-and-wales-mortality-during-the-covid-19-outbreak/

So far, data up to 13th March shows no change against the average over the past 5 years. They reckon it’ll be another fortnight before any effect from Covid-19 really should be noticeable if it’s going to have one.

There’s also a handy link to a lay summary at the top for those of us who need it.

Really fed up after 3 days of fever and all round feeling-crap. Not too ill but, as Arakel's scary link yesterday shows, its only after 5-7 days that the scary respiratory issues arise so still a few days away from that...
Thanks for asking though HH24 :).

Arakel has also posted theories about 500m and 1.1 billion worldwide deaths so I wouldn't pay too much attention to the stuff he finds on social media.

I hope you feel better soon.

Just took my recycling bins out to the kerb a minute ago. Surprised but proud to receive a resounding round of applause from all my neighbours. I do the bins every week and it’s nice to finally get the appreciation I deserve.

Would now be a good time to mention a pay rise?

And don’t abuse front line nhs people please when the decisions you don’t like are from many many layers above

And maybe if your kind don’t make them pay to park at work and let them have access to food and drink on shift ?

  21. I'm quite confused about this. Somebody on the news said that self employed can keep earning while claiming. Is this correct? I guess we'll have to wait for details.

I read something that may or may not be true saying that all the tax dodging contractors are going to suffer, as they post their salary as a tiny amount and trouser the rest in tax fiddles.

    I do hope it's true.

I’ve now read it’s not for people with salary plus dividends so is it sole trader only? Very confusing.

Was the point more that people couldn’t afford to wait until June and would therefore carry on?

It would of course be possible to work cash in hand and claim.

  26. If so that makes them an employee of their own limited company, in which case they claim on the other earlier 80% employee wages scheme

    Its not so confusing

  27. Jumbolina

So you claim as 100% shareholder you would sack yourself without government help and furlough yourself? And the company is left with zero employees and no board. Any dividend income is not covered. Can any small company pay any bills when it has no employees - can furloughed people access bank accounts? or is the whole thing just an artificial construct in this scenario.

Do you see why it’s not so simple? If this is how it works the government is derecognising dividends as a legitimate way for a small company owner to take earnings.

  28. Who said anything about sacking yourself?

If someone pays themselves a dividend that makes them a director of a limited company. A sole trader doesn't pay a dividend.

Therefore if they choose to claim it will be on the company grant scheme not the sole trader scheme.

Why would dividend income be covered by this support? Dividends are shareholder shares of the profit of a company. Why would the government underwrite that?

If someone has been paying themselves and a spouse dividends instead of wages to avoid taxes then that is their right to use that legal loophole, but it is also their problem.

  29. Moose

Is it not also the case that there would be inequity between small and larger companies if dividends were paid to 100% shareholders?

Large companies are taking out bridging loans to cover salaries, but they will have to pay these back eventually.

If you furlough someone you are giving them leave of absence. That’s what you need to do to claim the job retention compensation.

Who said anything about paying a spouse dividends FFS? A sole company director has two options. Take salary and corporation tax deduction. Or pay corporation tax and take dividends. Of course each company will do what is best for their circumstances. It’s not a tax loophole. It’s an expected and legitimate way of taking earnings.

  32. To be fair it is a way of reducing National Insurance liability, but is totally legitimate and is a reasonable trade-off for the lack of job security, sick pay and holiday pay that a one-man-band company faces. But yes, you are right, if you pay yourself through salary and dividend, then the dividend element will not be covered at all; your choice would be to furlough yourself, effectively making your company dormant, and to take the 80% of salary option which will be for most about £800 a month (better than nothing) or to 'take it on the chin' and rely on savings or borrowing to get through.

A large number of people are going to find themselves financially distressed, and a few people with a bit of surplus cash are going to clean up in the aftermath. What does that remind you of?

  33. What a sole trader draws from his/her business is a share of the profit of his/her business. Why would the government underwrite that?

Because we have sections of the economy substantially based on this model. Those people who are really only going to earn up to about 30k are likely not to have much to fall back on.

Going through the palaver of setting up a company to pay yourself in dividends is more the higher turnover end. I’m sure this will have influenced the thinking. Would anyone bother to do this under 40-50k?
