Covid-19 Virus

Probably belongs in the politics section but my opinion is that the Tory government have been found wanting here. Brutal cuts to the NHS means they struggle to cope every winter when we know there is high demand, never mind if there's a pandemic that they secretly kept their fingers crossed hoping it would never happen. What next, a war we weren't expecting that we'd struggle to cope with because our armed forces are cut to a minimum? A huge campaign of civil disobedience that the police can't manage because they've been cut by over 40%? As a country we can't even afford to mend potholes. Why? To appease their ultra rich tax avoiding chinless business chums from private school. Oversimplified maybe but that's the crux of the problem.

At this time we all have to pitch in together to defeat the virus (except the likes of Martin, Ashley and the sort of lowlife who steal supplies from the NHS that is) but after it's over, Johnson has to be publicly subject to an Andrew Neil-type interrogation in which the decisions of Cameron, May and himself on public spending cuts over the last ten years has to be challenged. A minister on TV even now is STILL saying 'we are working jolly hard to get PPE to hospital staff' despite it being promised by last Sunday. They continue to make it up as they go along.

    Rant over. As you were.

Wash your hands and stay at home. :)

Cases look like they're about to take off in Japan now they've not got the Olympics as a motive to cover up the figures.

What's the deal elsewhere? Insurance or be damned?

It's so ingrained that healthcare is a free right here that it rarely crosses my mind how it works abroad. My daughter had chickenpox when we were on holiday in Montenegro a few years ago. Had to go to the hospital to get paperwork for the travel insurance and saw a doctor. Afterwards we said thanks and just walked out. The receptionist came running after us into the car park as we hadn't paid - never crossed our minds.

All you hear from that odious turd Trump is about the markets and the economy. Just empty rhetoric about sticking it to the virus as though it can actually hear it. Nothing about healthcare being able to cope or praise for staff.

Mate of mine was a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS who could take no more of the cuts. He's moving to Canada as it disillusioned him with the UK so much.

Why are there so many on tw@tter wanting the army to enforce the quarantine? Are they aware it'll be hungover squaddies in their late teens/early 20s on the streets enforcing the lock down, not Captain Mainwaring?

Looks like the curve might be starting to flatten for the UK, and that's even before the latest measures have had an effect, hopefully we'll see the trend continue.

Went to our local Tesco yesterday, plenty of food available and everyone was very calm - was quite pleasant actually. They also were limiting the amount of people in which probably helped.

It was reading well until “to appease ultra rich tax avoiding chinless business chums from private school”.

Didn’t you point out how much people stereotyped on the other thread!?

We've had to lock all of ours away as relatives of patients were stealing them. I walked past a couple of shoppers last week in ffp3 masks. Meanwhile, the other half's hospital don't have any... as ITU staff they can only be face fitted if they provide their own. Terrible state of affairs

I think they important point about all this now is the admission from the imperial college that a lot of the deaths predicted in their modelling would’ve happened this year anyway.

In their ‘do nothing model’ they predicted as many as 500k deaths. 400k of those may have died anyway in the next year, Corona would have just meant that 400k was brought forward and dispersed over a relatively short period of time overwhelming the NHS.

So every action we do has to be about avoiding the NHS being overwhelmed to avoid any unnecessary extra deaths, and that’s it. Whenever possible life has to go back to normal where there is any tolerance within NHSs ability to handle things, because any action beyond that will be pointless and counter productive in the long term.

I agree that things need to go back to ‘normal’ when they can, though it will be a new normal for the time being at least. We sort of agree now on the strategy.

But your use of the word ‘just’ is very odd. The last year of your life is probably quite an important one as it is your last. Extending it as far as any quality exists is what we do. This includes middle aged and younger cancer patients who may get quite long periods of time.

The 100,000 over is quite a lot of people unless we have the restrictions we do. So it is clear, we have no choice but to fight it on these terms.

Likewise, left Mr HH queuing in the sunshine at 9.30am this morning to get into Waitrose, while I pootled off to our local farm shop as I just needed to get some veg for a little old lady and I promised her I’d be with her by 10am. Although it took Mr HH a while to get in, once there he found the shelves were well stocked and he managed to get everything we needed, including some fresh chicken. He said the atmosphere was calm and cheery and he had a good chat with the girl (a safe distance) behind him in the queue. I have to say our town centre looked most surreal though - empty, apart from people queueing with big spaces between them for the supermarket and pharmacy. It looked like a scene from a distopian film.

Yes I know what you mean, I get that same feeling when I got out. Strange, but yet something also a little exciting that humanity can learn a lot from this occurrence when it's all over. A reset if you will. Perhaps being too fanciful there, but I live in hope.

I am impressed how quickly the penny has dropped in the last week & the vast majority are now complying with these new world rules. Myself included.

I'm not an arch libertarian but it's really shocked me how many people on social media at least seem to be cheering along the idea of the police having the power to question whether your shopping is essential or demanding the army come out on the streets. I think anyone rational can somberly accept the former is necessary in the short term but the military on the streets would be a massively regressive step.

The Army is unnecessary for policing right now. The best way is to continue to police with consent. Most people won’t take their bending of the restrictions too far. Policing is only needed if public order is threatened or if gatherings happen.

Boris's sense was that they shouldn't need to involve the police or the army at all. Those that wanted it to be a law need to accept the enforcement consequences, surely.

I’m not sure what you are saying. Can you try again, but define who these different groups are and maybe what your opinion is?

I think it's partly a reaction to the anti-social behaviour that goes on across the country. People see this as a real chance to get the police and / or army out there and come down hard on anyone being anti-social. In a way I can understand it as police cutbacks have seen a number of forces struggle to cope and some communities feel that law and order has taken a hit. That said, a chunk of people are deluded that the police are going to turn up and beat the living daylights out of youths in tracksuits on bikes for doing wheelies. It's a little bit like Brexit, where an undercurrent of anger on this issue is coming to the surface. Leighton Buzzard has had a lot of problems with gangs of youths and Travellers causing havoc and basically doing what they like in the last few years - that sort of thing, and the perceived lack of dealing with it, has wound people up and they see it as a chance to redress the balance.

It's also a British thing, a bit like manners and queuing properly. At the moment the country needs people to behave in a certain way for the greater good and if you don't do it, that's just not cricket.

I'm merely saying that Boris wanted the restrictions on movement to be advice/directed/voluntary rather than more draconian measures. Others wanted him to enforce the restrictions like France, for example. Those that wanted those more draconian measures can't really complain if the new laws now need to be enforced over here. France are using 100,000 to enforce the laws.

    Who is complaining?

What is you are saying? That the measures are unnecessary and those who wanted them deserve the Army on the streets?

Honestly trying to get to the bottom of it. I feel like you want to have a pop at someone.

You are forgetting that there is a middle ground, strict measures, policed by consent with the cooperation of 99% of the UK.

That sounds exactly like something the French would do - they love both doing nothing and rioting.

  28. Please feel free to add to the list below which is of businesses that are not exactly stepping up to the mark.

    • Wetherspoons (Where to begin?)
    • Sports Direct (refused to close, then put online prices of fitness equipment up 50%; see also Newcastle United)
    • Virgin Atlantic (asked staff to take 8 weeks unpaid leave)
    • Britannia Hotels (made staff redundant and homeless)
    • Travelodge (kicked out residents being housed by local authorities)
    • Next (asked staff self isolating to take it out of holidays or unpaid leave)
    • Rick Stein (making staff redundant rather than using his own cash to tide over until government support kicks in)
    • Gordon Ramsey (ditto)

But not to be too negative, there are a few companies who are going beyond the call of duty, likewise let us know is going above and beyond:

    • Fullers Pubs (Cancelled rents for publicans)
    • Watford FC :)
    • Aldi (installed screens and raised salaries)

Went outside today for a short walk. No one around. Very eerie.

The air quality is incredible though. I expected air pollution to drop with the enormous reduction in travelling, just not so quickly.

Particulates will drop to the ground reasonably quickly so the quality of the air will be better. The CO2 levels and other gases are also not being built up as much but those probably won't fall by a considerable amount.

T'would be nice if one of the "lessons learned" after this is all over would be encouraging reduced travel through telecommuting. I'd love to maintain something close to these improved levels, even if it isn't a magic bullet for all things climate change related.

I’m not complaining about anything. Everyone is managing ok. I think the restrictions on the public (work is another matter) are fine. The Army or not is a straw man. It’s not happening nor does it appear necessary.

What is it you think the 100,000 are doing in France?

Bit of a kick in the nuts to some small business owners by the Chancellor. Capped to people with 50k or less trading profits. He justifies it by saying the rest earn "on average 200k per year" but the fact remains there will be a whole bunch of people with trading profits of 50k to 80k who he has left high and dry. The grant given is capped at 30k before tax so excluding them is poor imo. Many of these businesses will have revenue of zero for the next 6 months. It's unrealistic to expect that income range to have build up enough liquidity to cover 6-9 months of zero income.
