Ways To End The Season Fairly

I know it’s a difficult time for everyone but we’re at risk of losing a sense of proportion here.

Around 12,000 people die on average every week in the UK. The vast majority of whom are aged 45+. Some of those succumbing to Covid-19 may well have died of ‘natural causes’ or other identifiable health complications within that period anyway. Even if every one of the 20,000 over the 12-18 months until the pandemic is declared over is in addition to those who would normally have died, it only represents a pretty modest increase.

I fully understand the stats and that looking back in future years CoVid19 deaths may only represent a blip in the death rate for a few months - but this is a global pandemic - it's going to dominate all our lives for months. Showing BCD PL games as some sort of "bread and circuses" appeasement is not going to feel right.

This is well reflected in this article

The research doesn't show how much overlap there will be but obviously what we're trying to prevent is a flood of the NHS

Also to add, if they do show the games on TV, where do they think people will watch them? In isolation at home? I doubt it
More likely imo round their mates assuming pubs are still shut. More evidence to me the Southampton owner is out of touch of the current social distancing objective

Lets just get all the games played behind closed doors, but let some of the games be broadcast free to air whilst still having the PL reserved for those that pay for Sky etc.

Maybe a payment could be made to all lower league clubs by the government in return for TV coverage till the end of the season. This should be what is broadcast FREE TO AIR as a public service during this difficult time, so that those who have little else to do because everything else is closed could watch sport on TV.

Maybe other sport behind closed doors and other forms of entertainment could also be funded by the government and broadcast on TV so that we all don't go stir crazy.

Top quality trolling. I have to respect the game here. Well played.

Let’s just get the games played behind closed doors, and broadcast, as if such a thing required no more than 22 blokes showing up and kicking a ball around. It’ll get bites though, as it’s so clearly flawed, so well played.

Maybe the government could just pay lower league clubs, as if it hadn’t just pledged to 80% of people’s wages and we aren’t about to walk into one of the biggest financial crises in history. But it’s okay, it’ll be free to air because people are so bored right now. Sensational trolling once again.

Finally, maybe the government can also fund netball, hockey and various other sports, so the people bored at home can have some entertainment to watch. Again, so hideously flawed, it’s almost certain to get bites.

A masterful display of trolling. Well played.

Given the lack of preparation by the government in the 2 months during which it was obvious this was gonna happen, the half arsed response by the government, the inadequate social distancing and the lack of resources available to the NHS a lot more than 20k will die. The NHS will be overrun and most people in critical condition wont get adequate treatment once the numbers spike. Its gonna be grim, of the 7 known human coronaviruses none has a vaccine . The virus has already mutated from animal to human transmission to human to human and mutated again so there are already two strains of the virus and as of yet there is no proof of permanent immunity for survivors. Stay safe people!

We may not ever see a live football match again. Even if this is brought under some sort of control, the Virus is not going to just "go away". Like the flu and the common cold, it's going to be
here every year from now on. What are we going to do, put the country into lockdown every winter? A bit OTT perhaps, but something that might just happen. We are going to have to learn
to live with a third extra ailment eventually - and months/years down the road people will adjust. Life will get back to normality eventually - with people feeling ill dealing with it as best they
can. We have no cure for the cold or flu, so we will never find a cure for this one either.

That is wildly OTT. Things will get back to normal and vaccines and drugs will become available. People keep relating this as a ‘flu/cold’ type virus when it’s not - it’s like SARS and causes pneumonia. SARS and MERS were eradicated but it took time.

I don’t mean this personally but I think to say we might never see live sport again again is a bit ridiculous.

I'm just thinking of worst case scenario that's all. Obviously I want normality to return ASAP, but all the doom and gloom you hear everyday just gets a lot to hear/see I guess.
I miss walking down Occupation Road to see the boys in yellow - and I am sure we will do. Just venting I guess. But I like your take on it Burnsy.

    I
I'm not trolling I think with millions at home with nothing to do, if the government funded extra home entertainment it would do wonders for the peoples moral.

And as for the sports teams etc. it would help save them from going bust, therefore it would be a double whammy of good IMO.

It’s not really a ‘take’ on it. It’s going by what everyone has said and looking at the evidence of what’s gone before. Your version of the worst case scenario isn’t one I’ve seen anyone in a position of knowledge/authority come out with.

I’m no great expert at these things at all but I can speak about mental health given the past year me and my family have had. I would advise listening to the advice given by those in charge - and whilst it is important to watch the news each day, try and take the key bits of info to you and that you can process and deal with. And then switch off from it. I personally have done my best to switch off from viewing any videos from Italian hospitals for example - I know they are reality and important. But I know they will do my frame of mind no good whatsoever. Be selective about what you see and it will lessen the sense of ‘doomsday’.

I think we all want to see Watford again. But personally I find it easier to focus on things that will give me a sense of happiness now, not some intangible date in the future.

They cannot play sport until it is safe to do so. That’s just a fact.
Sportsmen and Sportswomen are not policemen, or firemen...they aren’t paid to ‘run in the direction of danger’. They can play when it’s safe for all of us and not a minute sooner.

There are plenty of things that can entertain people in the meantime.

Haven't read the article, but I guess that figure will be negotiated downwards and teams will muddle on a bit less out of pocket

  20. There will be a negotiation and the PL will give the TV companies some free games next season and some exclusive behind the scenes stuff and the £200 and something million will be forgotten

This is where I am at this point.

I don't need to be convinced any further; I've seen enough data and expert testimony to be concerned. I'm fortunate to know an immunologist and he's keeping me up to date with important data, because he's trained enough on this topic to be able to look at it through a professional lens and not be overwhelmed.

The people close to me understand the risks and are taking sensible steps. That's all I can control.

If you're struggling to really care too much about the virus itself - like I am - there are some viral videos of what hospitals in Italy look like and I can tell you, it's chaos.

Firstly do the right thing for the NHS staff who are working harder for weeks on end than any day we've had in our lives, you should be making sure you're not spreading the virus and making their lives any more difficult.

Secondly do it for yourself. If you have a separate emergency right now - heart attack for instance - you're probably going to die literally because people decided to go to the pub the other day, because there is nobody to care for you. This isn't about the virus itself, it's about the strain on hospitals so don't be a ****.

  23. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

All very sensible until the last sentence. I'm not being a ****. All I've been promoting is the idea of society having mature discussions, rather than succumbing to fear and hysteria based on some sort of flashing and ever-increasing totaliser.

Probably not for this football thread, rather than the one in general chat, but the strain on hospitals could be significantly reduced if we stopped applying the 'peacetime' rules about hospital admissions. They've already binned off non-urgent and elective surgery and outpatients appointments. And bought up all the private capacity. Next up has to be to significantly reduce access to hospitals for Covid-19 sufferers until sufficient capacity is found for them. We can debate all day whether that should by by age, likely outcomes, prognosis of their underlying condition(s), first come first served...but carrying on as we are, admitting everyone, is going to be a disaster. We'll soon have to stop carting them there in ambulances when there's no where to put them.

Sorry, I was tempted to clarify at the end of all that when writing it's not you that being a ****, you really weren't the aim of that part I promise. I've just seen some ACTUAL ****s in Marbella etc who are clearly utterly thick, they're the ones I'm referring to. Those going to the gym, not really that bothered etc etc are fine, just a risk isn't it. My fault, not clear.

Re. Second paragraph is that right? So if they relaxed those rules in theory more are allowed to be admitted? I had no idea! But isn't there the issue if you relax those rules, there aren't enough staff anyway at this point? Not employed enough spare capacity staff.

  25. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

My fault but maybe I wasn't clear.

In normal times , if you're ill you look after yourself at home. If you need more help, you go to the GP. If you're even sicker you might then go to hospital under your own steam or by ambulance, and if you're unwell enough they admit you. And if you're gravely unwell you're looking at a stint in the ICU. Hopefully not then progressing to the mortuary. I think we'd all recognise that as the normal order of things, while accepting that not ever case goes in a neat progression and lots will come into the system at different levels.

Currently, the medical services around Europe are broadly applying those same rules to Covid-19 sufferers (understandably minus the GP). So everyone who is unwell enough goes to hospital and is then admitted. And for the gravely unwell ones it's off to the ICU (if they have space). Capacity soon runs out.

Maybe the conversation we need to have as a society, if it comes down to it - and I know this is brutal but it's also realistic - is 'where, if your body can't fight this off, do you want to die?' As you say, the Italians are dying on cot beds in hospital service yards or on corridor floors. Essentially those sufferers are turning up, having no prospect of getting the treatment they need, almost certainly infecting the doctors and nurses to boot in the process, and then passing away without family present and in undignified surroundings.

We had over 2 months of inertia when we should have been preparing for this. It was obvious in mid January a pandemic was on it's way, that ventilators are needed to keep severe cases alive and that health workers need training and advanced PPE including N95 masks. I think it'll take the UK 3 more months to significantly increase its ventilator capacity, train nurses appropriately and solve the PPE production crisis. They also need to manufacture N95 facemasks for the entire population as these dramatically reduce spread. People in Hong Kong started wearing surgical facemasks in January and by the end of February there were no cases of influenza. Coronavirus is more contagious than flu but if everyone wears a face mask (especially N95) infections nosedive. The next 3 months r gonna b very very tough and football will seem increasingly irrelevant as fatalities increase.

Non-league seasons expunged. Since I moved down there a few months ago I've been following Herne Bay who are having an excellent season. That all now counts for nothing.

    And rightly so.

Come on PL and EFL, time to call it off.

  34. Surely no one is still thinking it’s a good idea to finish this season sometime over July - Sept, then have a pre season Oct - Nov, then ram a full season into Dec - May, playing twice or three times a week for those doing well in cups or Europe, with squads of 25, then immediately go into the European Championship? Players will be dropping like flies.

Plus you have to add in all those who had serious disease before the NHS diverted resources to Corvid19. The Health Service Journal has reported that (for example) cancer patients assessed to have less than a 50%+ chance of survival will have treatment delayed and moved to remote (telephone) consultations.
