All good points. As it is not my money, I shouldn't be as concerned. My trips to the Vic are much rarer than yours because of a little matter called the Irish Sea. I too would miss the old stadium for my occasional visits, if we were to move, but that is a long way off I feel.

PS: I have the utmost respect for Mr. Pozzo. My initial post was more questioning if the story was genuine. If they decide to build it, I will be there.

Eh? Its 10 minutes walk from both Watford Junction and Watford High Street, and yards from the roads to the the A41 and M1/m25. And it's surrounded by schools, public and private, with spare land that would love the opportunity to charge a fiver for parking.

We have the best pitch in the Premiership. Unless we turf it up and take it with us...

I understand football clubs need to move forward, but I cannot see this going ahead especially if we do end up going down. Money is not a luxury in the lower leauges, and we would at least need to remain a top flight side for at least another five years or so to avoid turning into the next Bury.

A stadium is a nice idea, but the likes of Spuds, @rse and Everton have that sort of cash to throw at an investment of this size. We struggle to buy defenders in the Window. Maybe a long term thing, when we have cleared all loan debts.

You do realise it’s not via the existing BH Golf entrance? This (if it goes ahead) is close to Park Avenue and via a new access through the nature reserve

it’s closer to Watford Junction than our current ground

On your other point, there will be a lot of local objection to the planning

Con******g over the nature reserve will be fine. The Tory government will love it.

errrrrrrr NO ITS NOT. Using current routes its 33 minutes walking from he junction, and its only yards to the small local roads which are almost as bad as west watford....

    Dear god no.

We are fine where we are, the additional revenue will just get spunked on average South Americans and it will be completely soulless. I’d rather we got relegated this season to end any talk of this.

I didn’t start supporting Watford because they were successful so I don’t mind not being able to attract “bigger players” who could not care less about Watford FC.

I’m not sure why my previous posts were removed from the other thread, I only said I would prefer it to be nearer to me in Suffolk! The cat is out of the bag now so I guess we can discuss this further.

I don’t see much in the way of objections to a move, they will never please everyone. The bottom line is that VR has been left behind by other leading clubs.
I’m sure the Pozzos would build us something special and very different from the boring Leicester/Southampton/Middlesbrough type new stadiums.
There could be exciting and ambitious times ahead and I can’t wait for more detailed info from the owners.

Ok, I was walking quickly! If you were a crow, they are about 0.75 miles away. But Google Maps shows 15 minutes walk from Park Avenue/Link Road to the Junction, and about 19 minutes to Watford High St station.

    Sounds good to me

Am I right in thinking that we do actually own the land the current stadium is on? That will be a fair wedge if/when sold to go towards a new stadium.

Location is very important though. I live in Reading and not only is the Madejski a sad identikit stadium I hope we’ll avoid if we go ahead, it’s in the bloody middle of nowhere as are many.

The proposed location of this new stadium keeps it within the town which is huge.

Whilst we struggle to fill the current stadium it isn’t down to lack of demand. More that people who have the tickets don’t turn up. Pretty sure we would sell out 25-30,000 (Premier League assumption of course) and you want room to potentially attract new supporters which isn’t a complete pipe dream.

It’s already about that long to walk from the Junction to the Vic, and that’s not including stopping off at the pub or a café on the way.

It would be a great location, minutes from the town and the Junction by foot, minutes to High St station or Bushey St, onto the Bakerloo Line, via Harrow & Wealdstone and the A41, M25 and M1 by car. Even the Met line is only a 37 minute walk away, (pop in a the pub for a rest).

It opens up a massive catchment area.

...if it got planning permission, etc.

  24. A new stadium doesn't necessarily have to be soul less. I don't find Spuds soul less. In fact once it's aged a bit I think it will become one of the all time classics.

I think the pictures look cool. The new stadium even has an amazing starry starry night over it. What were the skies like in Watford when you were young? Dull monotonous? Not anymore if we build a new stadium.

We don’t struggle to sign defenders because of funds, we struggle because we don’t target them.

It baffles me how many people aren’t realising that football stadiums are very very rarely built by just using club funds. There would be outside investment, there would be the money gained from selling out current ground...plus other sources no doubt.

And this is a long term thing - if it happens, it will be 5 or 6 seasons down the line anyway you’d think. What should we do? Stop the building process every time we are in the relegation zone in those years?

I love VR. I think we all do. But there comes a time and place to move on and we’ve been face lifting the ground year on year now and it’s obviously becoming a constricting process when trying to grow the club and its revenue. 238 seats there, 374 here...there’s only so much we can do with it.

If it’s done right, I’d 100% do it. We’ve been in the PL long enough for us to make bold moves like this. And everything Gino has done in terms of the structure of the club has been brilliant. I very much doubt they’d get it wrong.

Moving stadium for the sake of ' progress' is not necessarily a good thing. Arsenal fans were sold the dream of moving Highbury to the now devoid of atmosphere and character Emirates stadium as it was supposed to make them competitive with the biggest teams in the world. Arsenal have not won the league title since. In their last 5 years before they left Highbury they won 2 Premier Leagues, 3 FA cups, went unbeaten in 49 games and in their last season at Highbury reached the champions league final. I am convinced Arsenal would be in a stronger position and would of won the league title at least once if they had stayed at Highbury.

Liverpool had plans to move from Anfield but instead decided to stay at their home and now they are about to win the Premier League having won the champions league last season.

Watford in my opinion will be no better or more successful for moving whatever the marketing may tell you. I am sure Sunderland fans were told how wonderful the future would be simply for having a modern stadium but now they are in League 2.

I think we should stay at home, its still easy to get tickets even in the Premier League and when we do get relegated we only have 10 - 15 thousand Watford fans who would want to watch championship football. If this happens in a new stadium ticket prices will be more expensive. Some of our season ticket holders support Watford as their second club and would go missing if we got relegated. I think this is a vanity project by the Pozzo's to increase the value of the club when it eventually gets sold. Building a big new stadium most definitely does not assure Watford of being a better footballing team. This is just my opinion but I would rather stay at Vicaridge Road.

  33. Arsenal lost their way because they got stale, sticking with the same manager for 22 years, and whose philosophies, once cutting edge, were surpassed. Highbury only held 30 something thousand as an all seater. It was laughably small for that club. And it was old, very very old. Wrought iron and rivets old. The views were appalling, if you were sitting at the back at the bottom you couldn't even see half the pitch because the floor above obscured it. It was like watching a game of football through a letterbox. The place was only fit for bulldozing.

Building the Stadium of Light didn't put Sunderland in league 1. Employing poor managers and paying over the odds for mediocre players did.

Arsenal are now one of the richest clubs on the planet due to their stadium move. Their fans are just atrocious and their lack of success is down to the people running the club, nothing to do with the stadium. Liverpool have been gradually improving for years, I don't think increasing the capacity at Anfield has made them become champions this season.
