Lets see where the general consensus lies on here... 1 point from safety with 12 games to go.

Under Pearson we've had a good run, now a few poor results.

What does your gut say about how our season will end?

Want more than anything to stay up (in a purely sporting sense) but clearly, given our position, it will take outside results at the very least to see us safe, and that would be coupled with a near flawless run in from us, in which we pick up all the points we could reasonably be expected to compete for. Given how bad we have been up to this point at doing that, and the repeated and quite shocking failures in mentality and ability (in terms of certain players), I just couldn't put any money on that happening as it stands.

A huge amount depends on whether Sarr can come back in and immediately both perform at the zenith of his abilities and, in doing so, revitalise the team and its performances. Cynic that I naturally am, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we get to 12 or 13 days from now only to hear that he is in fact not fit, despite the talk from the conference last week that he was already 'recovered' from his injury, given the club under Gino's record when it comes to sidelined players; similarly, for how long, exactly will Femenia and Janmaat both be (as well as why exactly have they been) existing in some shadowy netherworld?

We've had quite a few crunch moments, and 'must-win' matches, and even the odd opportunity to lift ourselves out of the mire altogether, and we've spectacularly **** the bed at pretty much each and every one of them; Bournemouth is probably the only one we could say we responded to, and the effects of that certainly didn't last. If we turn up in two weeks and miraculously give Utd a bloody nose thanks to a perfect hat-trick from Troy, all assisted by Sarr with a perfect Whoscored rating of 10.0, then perhaps we can start to believe again, but right now it's the nature of the performances and the mistakes being made that fill me with dread, just as much as the fact that we're actually in the relegation zone.

Relegated. Don't think we've got the fight in us to stay up!

I don't think it would require both - if we get five wins out of the six remaining clearly winnable fixtures (Newcastle, Norwich and Southampton at home, and Palace, Burnley and West Ham away) we could get away with losing all the other games (as long as one of them isn't West Ham), and that includes all the games against the big clubs.

Yes, but that's still only true if other teams around us do worse; if they match our results, we will be relegated, because we are currently in the relegation zone. I'm not saying that's necessarily likely, but you get what I mean: we will need the teams we are in direct competition with to continue to do badly alongside us doing well.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post - when you said "outside results", I thought you meant us getting results against the big hitters that we at best only have an outside chance of getting.

Though at least one poster has said we will likely require one or two of those shocks, given as you said we haven't been very reliable when it comes to winning the games we've expected to win!

I get you. Mmm, I certainly wouldn't turn a shock down, as long as it doesn't turn out to be some horrifying pyrrhic false dawn!

50/50 after 40 votes so far, split camp.

Still a few prominent contributors on here yet to nail their colours to the mast..

    Nope.

We were down the minute the January window closed, with the morons that run this club letting it pass us by without strengthening our embarrassing defensive options.

Actually, put like that I feel quite positive. Especially when you factor in (starting XI) players returning from injury, a run in which is no worse than our fellow strugglers and a manager who knows what it takes.......

Survival. I'm optimistic we will stay up. One point from safety with 36 to play for and so much we can improve. I would rather be in our situation than any of the bottom six - so three months of relative excitement for me.

But if I am wrong, I'll be miserable for a day, then perk up as I look forward to winning the Championship next season.

It beats being miserable for 3 months

I think 50/50 is about right. You can make arguments for staying up and going down, one thing that gives us a fighting chance is that despite the recent disappointing results, any games we’ve lost under Pearson have been by the narrowest of margins and could’ve of very easily not been defeats at all. Essentially we’ve been in every single game we’ve played under him and if the same applies for the final 12 games then those narrow defeats could easily turn into narrow wins.

    30-30 now, dead even.

Looking at who voted yay or nay, no surprises apart from Clive of the Kremlin voting for the latter. I notice CleyHorn still hasn't voted...

I notice there are a few other regulars who haven't voted. Is it because there isn't a "No idea" option?

If by "No idea" you mean "don't know" - then that's me. I genuinely don't know if we will stay up or not, to me it is pretty much 50/50.

I had thought that if we didn't beat Brighton I would be resigned to relegation but - well, the gap is still only 1 point...

With 12 games left we're 1 point from safety so why are so many contributors so quick to write us off? Yes, we should have picked up more points from our last 3 games but we're playing pretty well and have key players coming back from injury. Nothing's certain and after the next two fixtures things might look a little bleak but I see no reason why we won't manage to keep our heads above water by the end of the season. Just.

Without being snarky in any way, it's probably (at least in my case) because the flipside of that is that after 26 games, we are in the middle of the relegation zone. We have watched the majority of the season unfold with us largely playing poorly, not getting results and acting like a basket case to boot (It's also the case that, when fixtures played are evened up, we may well be at least two points from safety; that one point team have a game in hand, after all, that they're potentially capable of winning, if hardly favourites)

It's true, we are no longer acting like a basket case, but our recent form is once again rather poor, and I would contend that we are actually not playing pretty well at all. We were a month ago, but performances and results since then have meant that the overall picture to me trends back towards us being a poor team; if we have carried that early Nige form on, you could say we had just recovered our level, but we haven't, and have instead reintroduced quite a lot of the mistakes and frailties that were the hallmark of this team and our season pre-Nige.

Do I think it's possible to stay up? Of course. But I don't see, in this moment, why it seems more likely than not, based on the evidence we have available to us. We will have to register as many wins in those final 12 games as we have in the entire season up to this point (the aforementioned 26); that in itself is a fairly substantial reason why we might not manage it.

That's assuming West Ham, Villa, Bournemouth and Brighton win 5 of their last games - which, looking at their form and their remaining fixtures (particularly West Ham and Bournemouth's) I would suggest is unlikely. 4 wins and a couple more draws will see us ok.

  29. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

Fairplay, but if that is the case, which is of course perfectly possible, it's not really that much more persuasive overall; instead it would be only one less victory than we have so far managed in all our games up to this point. Either way, there's still an aspect of relying on other teams to do at least as badly as we have, rather than being able to get out of it on our own terms. Obviously, I hope you're right/what you are envisaging comes to pass, but the rest of the my comment still stands in that context.

  30. Lloyd

All of the teams involved in the relegation issue will rely to a greater or lesser extent on others f***ing up as much as their own results. What does getting 'out of it on our terms' actually mean? If, at the end of the season we have one more point than at least 3 other teams that'll be good enough for me.

Yes, indeed, and we are currently the worst placed of them.
Yes, and me too; I'd bite your hand off, but we're not talking about whether or how we'd like to survive, we're talking about the likelihood of it.

  32. Arakel

Quite. The bit it is easy to lose sight of is the other teams who are struggling are also putting out crap results. Ultimately we don't need to be good, we just need to be better than the other poor performers. The bar for that isn't particularly high.
