Not totally given up hope yet, but obviously our hopes are fading fast. We have a big squad including some absolute quality, some absolute ***** (at least at Prem level) and various young players of markedly different backgrounds, what do we think will happen to all of them?

The "absolute quality" will go, and the "absolute *****" will stay. That's all you need to know.

A huge amount of outgoings which is desperately overdue regardless of going down. We have far too many players who pick and choose when to turn it on and are living on reputation. Pereyra, Deulofeu, Success can all gladly go. I suspect Doucoure, Capoue, Sarr, Pedro, Kabasele would also push for moves away.

Foster, Hughes, Deeney, Gray, Cleverley, Chalobah, Cathcart, Dawson, Masina could all stay and play a part.

Intrigued to see what would happen to Welbeck. I'd imagine he would look for a move but I can't see anyone being as stupid as Watford and taking a punt on a crock.

What you fail to understand is that Welbeck is only at Watford because of his injury record. He's an England international and a top 6 player who we got for nothing. Ok, he's pretty much missed this season, but hopefully will play a part in the run-in.

If we go down, I'd say we'd have a strong chance of keeping him. The reason being, he's no longer a free transfer. On a free you can take a punt on Welbeck, but he's now under a 3-year contract and is a £20m player. I don't see too many clubs taking that risk on him for that kind of money, although he probably does have a release clause in his contract, clubs would still have to meet that valuation.

You see, his injury record is to our benefit.

Watford were not stupid in signing him. I'd say he's probably one of the best signings the club has ever made.

If he could have a sustained run of fitness now then I'd agree. But he's been crocked pretty much all season and managed one goal in a nothing game. If he had a full season of being fit then he would tear up the Championship and would indeed be marked as a great signing. As of right now he's been nothing but a waste of money.

Well a free transfer is not a waste of money in my book. Just to have him at the club is of huge benefit. He gives players a big lift. We only see the team on matchday, but during the week in training is where you earn the respect of your peers. All the players speak so highly of him, of his quality and professionalism. I get that we'd want to see him more often on matchday, but you can only hope that now he's fit, he'll finally get his career going with us.

I maybe in the minority, but I think he's a real marque signing for us and gives us some respectability when you see his name on the team sheet.

It’s similar to Wilshire at West Ham. He’s only there because of his injury problems. I agree Welbeck might agree to stay, but if he is on a pay per play agreement as rumoured and gets a big wedge when he plays and stays fit can we afford that in the Championship?

  11. hornetboy1

Yes, I'd say we could afford to keep the squad for one season. We get a 50% parachute payment, plus we will almost certainly be selling Doucoure, Deulofeu and Pererya. I would be very surprised if we kept Sarr as well, although he's on a long contract and Watford would want a significant figure before selling him. That tells me, we can make up the short fall in TV revenue by selling some key assets, but like I say we could only afford to do this for one season, two at a push, but then we'd have to cut our cloth accordingly if we do not manage to bounce back straight away.

The other players may well speak highly of him, but paying him over £100k a month (when injured) to give the players a big lift is a waste of money. And that big lift he gives the other players has lifted them only to second bottom.

I don't doubt he has talent - but he is a crock.

I don't think there would be a mass clear out and I think we'd be pleasantly surprised at being able to keep the younger players with us. Players like Sarr and Pedro have only just joined and haven't done enough to warrant a transfer fee that would give us the large profit the owners would be after.

The only main one to probably go would be Doucoure, and not because he's desperate to leave or jumping ship, but because he's fully earned his right to a move with an excellent attitude towards our club, even through his less impressive spells he works incredibly hard and I find him a very like-able character.

Unlike some, I'd absolutely love to keep Deulofeu, I think his fancy hair and playing style leads to easy criticism and lazy categorising as a flair player who doesn't work hard or care about the club. I'd say he's worked his backside off this season, yes he makes mistakes and wrong decisions at times, but he's been great overall in my eyes.

I don't think there would be any mass scramble for the rest (Sarr aside), so hopefully just the ones we don't want that we can move on, either permanently or on loan.

The problem is, I think the ones I would deem as us not wanting would probably be different to ones the club see that way.

Personally I'd like to see the following go - Janmaat or Femenia (to allow a new RB to come in), Holebas, one of the CB's (not Kabasele), Success, Gray and I know he divides opinion, but also Deeney for me - purely because I think we need a fresh approach to our attacks, especially those crucial moments in the box.

I was going by the rumoured package which was £25k per week when injured, £75k per week when he's not. Nobody on here will know for certain but I'd be surprised if he was on less than £25k a week.

  16. hornetboy1

Sorry, I misread that as £100k per week, not per month. What you've said is probably correct.

Pereyra will leave and has already stated that. Success can go and if we went down I would be amazed if Delefeou stayed. Doucoure would probably leave but I don't think the others would.

Yes basically anyone who can make the club money will be off or anyone on over 50k unless they take a pay cut.

All the British players might well stay although Hughes could attract interest for example.

Will Pefro and Quina stick around for example ?

It's scary. Our defence and strikers will remain rubbish, but will be a year older so even more rubbish. Our ace keeper will be well old and in all probability be past it. The only bright spot in our team - the midfield - will all leave (I forgot to mention Sarr, who will obviously leave too).

We will require a massive overhaul of the entire squad - virtully every single position! - and who has any confidence in our recruitment policy nowadays?

Even if we stay up a huge amount of work needs doing in the transfer window this summer.

    Turbulent times ahead.

The championship is great when you're winning every week and challenging for the title. I think people have forgotten how miserable it is when you're a lower half/mid table side. It's depressing as hell.

Any sane fan should desperately want us to stay up.

I can't see how you are arguing anything beneficial has come of Welbeck being here. So far, as pointed out, he's scored one meaningless goal, been injured and put in a handful of unimpressive appearances from the bench. If he's lifting the other players, he's doing it ever so subtly and I dread to think where we'd be without that lift. I mean, things could hardly be much worse.

So yeah, there's still a chance he could come good, either financially (if someone pays us any money for him which covers his wages, any signing on fee and leaves us in profit) or he goes on to play some games and do more than he's given us so far. Otherwise he's an utter, utter dud.

Fear not. An influx of recalled Colombians from Ligas 2 and 3 will fill our squad and pitch. Is there any homegrown quota in the Champ?

We'll Zuniga him. Play him in cup and u23 games then release him and then get sued for £6m in unpaid appearance bonuses. And lose.

Just a difference of view. I know some are absolutely sucked in by the Sky propaganda and peddle all the lines and stats they are told to, but overall the Premier League is a soulless, sanitised league of 6 teams and 14 who make up the numbers. And the mugs in the stands (me included) are nothing more than extras in a TV show.

No because in the premier league we have ace players who are a joy to watch in terms of technical ability. In the lower leagues we will have a load of cloggers who are grim to watch. And having the aforementioned ace players means getting to cup finals and having a glimmer of hope of winning the first ever trophy in the entire history of the club.

What exactly are the benefits of being in a lower league? It's easier to get tickets. What else am I missing?

I've got a friend who is a QPR fan. The epitome of middle of the road championship club. Would you care to swap our past 4 years with their past 4 years? If the answer is yes, please provide detailed reasons.

I remember laughing at how bad he was for Arsenal and they obviously agreed, letting him leave for free.

When we were a struggling Championship we were watching some absolutely dreadful football which I think Stoke and Huddersfield are watching now. I think people forget that and just look at seasons where we've done well which obviously is enjoyable. Give me any season we've had in the Premier League over Dyche's season or anything from 91-96
