Unless you are every gay person in the world, it doesn't really matter whether it bothers you, although it really still should, and not liking bagels is an insane false equivalence here.

  3. You heard a few gay chants and it doesn't bother you? Substitute black for gay. Still not bothered? I would suggest you have been spending too much time in rural France, except that my friends who live in Bourg and Moutiers, and my daughter in La Plagne are a lot more enlightened than you seem to be.

I think, unfortunately, part of the problem at the moment (aside from missing Saar, which is huge) is down the difference in mentality between now and being dead and buried. At the point we were 9 points adrift we had nothing to lose and seemed to play that way. Villa was worrying because for the first time we seemed content to try and sit on a 1-0 lead. Nerves seem to have taken over now we’re actually in the fight, not fighting to get into the fight.

This is the same guy I reported as having racial views last week, after he made remarks about Nigerians and white superiority. It was all swept under the carpet now he’s showing homophobic traits!

So Mapps should “not play again” when we’re short of defenders due to the injuries?
I understand you’re not a fan of his but really? So who are you going to play if you’ve thrown him out the club and we have no other fit defenders and we are in a relegation battle? A midfielder? Well, we are short of them at the moment too...a striker? A goalkeeper? An inexperienced member of the U23s - none of them shone against Tranmere to suggest they can be called upon yet at this level.
Mariappa playing every game isn’t what ideally we would all want BUT to suggest he’s never picked again is such a knee jerk reaction that you’re in danger of kicking yourself in the face and in our position, especially yesterday with the injuries, in a relegation battle, why would the club or you want to leave us shorter in terms of defenders and experienced defenders at that?
As has been said earlier in this thread, he made a mistake for the own goal. It wasn’t deliberate. As a player who is Watford to his core, he will be devastated. But it was a result of a half of increased pressure by Brighton and our lack of being able to win and retain the ball and the lack of use of the subs to help inject some energy. The goal felt like it was coming. In that last 11 mins of normal time plus another 5 for injuries who’s to say one of the other players wouldn’t have made a mistake if Mapps had let the ball run out for goal kick or throw in and the the danger had passed? Pressure causes mistakes - that’s part of football.

QUOTE="LaClusazSki, post: 2826419, member: 7497"]I do not agree about Mariappa. He may well be all we have left to play right back, but he is out of his depth at Premier level.
They had Dan Burns against him at first. He is Peter Crouch without the skills. As soon as Brighton took him off we were in trouble on the left.
At one point, Mariappa let the ball bounce over his head, schoolboy stuff.
Mariappa missed a simple chance to head the ball clear in the build up to the goal. He is known to panic. He ran back and made cover, but with his head down. He had no idea where the Brighton players were, that is poor awareness.
He was under no pressure, no Brighton player near him and no chance of that cross/shot going in.. No danger at all.
One player is not a team, but he should not play again.
It was an embarrassing error by a very, very poor player.[/QUOTE]

Well Dawson could play right back but he might be caught for pace - same with Cathcart .

It’s also very sad to have some of our fans chanting homophobic stuff. Don’t they know any of our history? Have they never been told that the most globally well known gay man is a major reason that they have a team to support? Back when I started supporting our club nearly every opposing team’s fans would chant the same boring “Elton John is a homosexual” and we were able to ignore it because we were proud of our Chairman and supported him as we did with all of our players of colour - Luther, JB etc. Who also used to receive abuse. We were proud that we were inclusive, enlightened and a bit different.

Agree but he clearly wasn’t considered fit enough for yesterday hence playing Mapps.

'Knee jerk' might be about the least appropriate word it's possible to use in this situation, given the long record, both immediate and historical, of Mariappa demonstrating on the pitch that he is not good enough to be in the Prem full stop, let alone starting for us.

Saying 'it's a mistake, he didn't mean to make it' is meaningless in this context, because not making mistakes is essentially his sole job and a, if not the, key determinant of the results of football matches. The fact that he's there is not his fault, but he still bears requisite responsibility for playing badly and making the mistakes that he does.

Let's not forget, of course, that appeals to 'lay off him' etc etc are ludicrous, because not only is everyone already placing the overall blame where it genuinely lies, with the hierarchy, but Mariappa is not here, and can't hear us. It doesn't make any difference whether people point out his legitimate flaws or not on an internet message board designed for discussion. It will not help or hinder anymore than 'getting behind the boys!' will. It's not up to us.

Fit enough to be on the bench, then you’re fit enough to play as you could be called upon within minutes.

I suspect there isn’t much difference between Dawson and Mariappa at RB - but Mariappa needs taking out of the team now. He’s not the greatest player but he’s been very poor for the last few games, even by his standards.

Mapps has been a good player for us, and he doesn't deserve the stick he gets on this forum. He's limited, we all know that, but he cares about the club and has made the most of his ability. What he did yesterday was unbelievable, and he deserves some stick for that, but only that. The rest of his game is sound enough.

He's clearly a back-up player, but because of recruitment problems, he's played more than he should have done. Way more.

I'd have Mariappa in our squad all day long, because he's a great pro. The fact he's used so often is a reflection of the lack of recruitment in defensive positions. We've been left with an extraordinary lack of numbers, let alone ability right across the defensive line. That is not Mariappa's fault. It's down to the decision makers.

If you play an entire season with the likes of Cathcart, Dawson, Mariappa, Kabasele & Holebas, you'll see plenty of f*** ups. It's not really their fault. It's the limit of their ability. It's not rocket science to know if you don't invest and improve an obvious area of concern you will have problems. The club did not recognise the problem, so they will be left with picking up the bill because of the lack of appreciation as to where our problems really were, or rather the severity of the problem was not understood.

Don’t disagree with any of that. But given what we currently have available in defence, I still think he needs to come out of the side. Was dreadful at Villa and hasn’t really picked his form up considerably since then. Dawson was a part of the team when form was good. He should be brought back in at Mapps expense, if Kiko and/or Janmaat haven’t recovered in a couple of weeks. And let’s face it, that’s unlikely knowing us.

I agree that what Mapps did yesterday was, as Cammy would say, UNBELIEVABLE!!! However, I do not agree with the overall stick he gets on this forum.

He is a good squad player and always gives 100% when called on and does not deserve the **** he gets from many on here, end of!!!

Disappointing to drop more points from a winning position again, but as others have said, some players looked knackered yesterday, we didn't have the energy to go for the kill and we were simply trying to hold out.

Hopefully after the break we'll have Kiko and Sarr back, both going straight in the starting XI which will strengthen us.

Some rest for a few bodies that have put in serious hard yards over he last 3 months or so (Capoue, Doucs etc.) to come back fresher.

Another 2 weeks training and sharpness for the recently return Cleverley and Welbeck, and Hughes too who seemed to pick up from where he left off yesterday with his good form.

Bournemouth have just lost again. City will thump West Ham when that game is rearranged.

We've a bit of history in pulling a shock result out of the bag when playing the so called bigger teams when nobody expects it. We've done it to Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and United before, we should have no fear going to Old Trafford seeing what the likes of Villa and Burnley have gone there and done this season.

It's not over yet, it's not exactly looking rosy either, but when have Watford ever done anything the straightforward conventional way? Either way it'll be a bit of craic and won't be a boring end of the season.

No one's questioning Mapps is a good guy, we know he is, however he's a professional footballer earning thousands a week.

He's a deer in headlights when he's got the ball, he's a deer in headlights when hasn't. He constantly misjudges the flight of the ball, wingers find space easily and cap it off the own goal elevated him to Captain Panic level - lack of awareness of what's around him. There was no reason to go with his dud left foot, just turn it round with his right foot for a corner.

I have some sympathy for him though, he probably got a call of 'away' rather than 'time' - he heard 'away' and Captain Panic took over.

While I agree that not liking bagels doesn't make you anti-semitic, not seeing the problem with overt and undeniable homophobic chants is a bit of a head scratcher.

It's not OK. Perhaps it doesn't bother you, but I feel like it should.

On a day of many disappointments, those chants were by far the greatest for me.

We were cruising and would have won comfortably if we hadn't have conceded a freak own goal, i was pissed but I don't really get the doom and gloom. Sarr will be back from now on (I presume) and who hell is going to beat us then?

I agree with that chap who said we will beat Liverpool. They will underestimate us and we will beat then (assuming Sarr is fit).

You armchairs have a hugely different perspective from the fans who watch the match live

What happened at Brighton was dreadful. I think he is getting off lightly due to his 'love' of the club, community projects and nice guy reputation.

Firstly you are not a voice of positivity at each home game, at least on here. You are an overly negative, depressing voice that relies on a skewed view of reality to justify your views.

Which is fine, it s a forum, people are allowed to express whatever they like (as long as its respectful).

Worth bearing in mind that the bookies put Watford as the 5th favourites to go down, so the general consensus ( as represented by the betting public) disagrees that Watford are likely to go down.

Everyone has an opinion but the most valid interesting one is based upon a balanced view of the facts .
