My wife put on the spot last night...

I’m 100% sure it is due to a present either she or the family is planning for me, as she almost never talks about Watford to me.

But she asked who is your favourite Watford player ever.

Honestly I was stuck! I started supporting and watching us about 30 years ago. So I have seen many greats.

apparently I only had about 2 minutes to decide so I settled on Luther. Maybe not the most technical player but ... he scored loads! And he was WFC. I’ve also met him a couple of times and he is top bloke. And hey, if you are stuck - pick the top scorer!

    I don’t regret my choice.

But I know other players I’ve watched a lot I have also loved, such as Ramage, Porter, Mooney, Gibbs... (I really loved Mooney)

Interestingly for me I didn’t think of anyone at first from the Pozzo era. Maybe if Sarr gets fit he could change that...

So who is your favourite WFC player?

"Favourite" and "best" invite different responses (difference in the title vs the body). :)

My favourite is Helguson. The man was absolutely brilliant, and I loved watching him play.

Best is quite easily John Barnes, by a country mile.

I’m hoping a mod changes the title for me as I had a similar mind choice at the time, I do mean favourite not best,

Barnes was obviously better than Luther, and when she asked me he popped in my head, but I only saw him for handful of games so I didn’t have that much attachment to him.

How does Barnes compare to Sarr? Barnes in a Watford shirt was a bit before my time.

Mooney, Ramage, Abdi, Helguson were all great to watch. Colin Foster always springs to mind as he scored the first Watford goal I saw live, a real shame I couldn't get him to do a legends interview. Matty Spring was also better than he was given credit for.

In terms of the best I've seen, I'd say Abdi but Sarr will take that spot before too long. Sarr is undoubtedly the best player on our books right now by some distance.

    Jurado.

Never have I seen such a perfect sprint down the wing and pass back to exactly where the sprint started from. The man was an artist plain and simple.

In all seriousness Doyley. His first goal brought to me the single most joyful experience I have ever had watching football.

A brief fumble on the terraces back in the 80s doesn't count as she wasn't a player*

Barnes was exceptional and had it all, pace, skill, heading, finishing. Even at a young age you just knew he was going to be brilliant and I don't think anybody has come close to his ability.
Sarr certainly has a lot of ability but there are questions about his finishing. Before his injury he really looked very good but still with room for improvement especially his first touch. We bought him for £30-£40m which I think was probably a little bit too much but based on that I would put Barnes north of £60m and possibly a lot more.

I unfortunately wasn't born when Barnes played for Watford. I just about remember the tail end of his career when I was a kid and he was fat and slow. Still find it hard to reconcile the Barnes Watford fans speak of with the one I remember as a child.

    Favourite: Almen Abdi
Best: Well Deulofeu has played (and scored) for both Spain and Barcelona, so Abdi.

Favourite Ian Bolton. Best striker of the ball I've seen play for us. Unfortunately wasn't around for Scullion, who my Dad said was different class and had a harder shot on him. Sure the older guys can clarify this for me?
Best Luther for the amount of goals no matter what league. Barnes as the most skillful.

Fave has to be Deeney. His devotion to Watford and his goal tally overall make for some fine readings. Watching a montage of his goals takes me back when he was fitter and slimmer. He can still do it now, but age and fitness of his body is starting to tell. A very close second had to be Alec Chambers. Great keeper and I will never forget his performance at Birmingham City in 1999, seeing Gerry Francis cringe.

Best is debatable. We have had some greats like Barnes and Luther, ao I really cannot decide.

I'll throw in a bonus. Worst technically gifted player Andre' Gray. He's worse than Success.

Yes - he hates football and wants nothing to do with it. I was told by one ex player (I think it was Keith Millen) that Foster was seen in the changing room as an oddball, a bit of a loner and generally strange man but in a harmless way. I finally tracked him down and he instantly seemed annoyed that I had done that, and he made it quite clear he didn't want to talk because he doesn't like the game and would rather forget about it. He is a gardener now, runs his own business somewhere in Surrey.

Blimey. I know there are players who don't want to remain in the game when they finish playing, Leighton Baines is one I believe, but that seems quite extreme

Not sure Scullion's shot was THAT ferocious, but he was a great player; makes you think how players like him, Arfon Griffiths (Wrexham) etc played so many games in the lower 2 divisions in those days.
If Deulofeu frustrates you these days, I can only imagine how you'd react to Scully dribbling through a whole defence, just to decide to try it again for fun.

    Fav: Luther
Best: Barnes, although I did not see Cliff Holton in his pomp.

Sarr reminds me a bit of a young Barnes but nowhere near at the moment. Barnes had pace, power , goal scoring ability, sublime close control. Finished PFA player of the year. Criminally not used at his best for England.
