Does anyone else dabble in this? What does your portfolio look like?

For those that are unaware/curious it's like a stock-market for footballers - you essentially buy and sell shares in footballers. The price is dictated by the market (so currently Neymar is the most expensive player on there at just over £8 a share). You can also earn dividends on your players based on either how they perform on match-day or by how often they feature in the media.

I've gone with a strategy of buying talented young players and holding them until they get a big move (which would see their price rise as people buy them when they sign for a bigger club).

I started with £25, then added another £25 when it was going well (and then my GF gave me £25 to stick in for her as well). So far I'm up almost 33% since about September/October time which is pretty good going (although that can mostly be attributed to Haaland, who I resisted selling when he got his move to Dortmund)

My Chelsea supporting mate done it for a while before his mrs put a stop to it. He reckons he was making a little profit but you had to heavily invest to start making good profits.

He obviously kept an eye on Chelsea youngsters. My advice at the time was peneranda ( maybe that’s why his wife put a stop to it)

What impacts the price? Just other people buying and selling? Does each player have a finite number of shares? How does the bookie make their money? Are the shares perpetual or do they cease to exist (eg at end of a season)?

Yeah it is an awesome concept and so much room for growth. It won't make you a millionaire but you can get very good % returns on your investment and lots of ways to win (your player to rise in price)

So, just out of interest, where exactly are these "good %" returns coming from? Would that be from the people who are losing money?

 

That will be the increase in members signing up with a little tinkering round the edges for buying good/bad players although something unregulated like that worries me somewhat. What is to stop the owners of the system manipulating the prices to take a slice or to bosot their own portfolios at the expense of pother players.

Might I humbly suggest that people play with what you can afford to lose, treat it as a fun and be like Ray Winston when the fun stops.

 

Sure, currently the product is growing at an amazing rate (around 1,000 new users every day) through market growth. So at the moment most people are making money primarily because of this growth. Eventually you are right it would become a zero sum game - for every winner there is a loser. However, I predict we are quite a few years away from that yet. It is hugely UK based (especially regarding the media payouts that happen every day) but is available in Ireland, Sweden, Canada and New Zealand. They have recently announced plans to launch in Germany with Spain to follow after that and other territories on the horizon also.
There are an estimated 500,000 sign ups so massive potential considering the amount of users on traditional betting sites and things like fantasy football.

I personally couldn't recommend it enough.

 

It is regulated by the Gambling Commission & IBAS and has no sanctions to its name - unlike some bookmakers.

The best thing is the quote from some mug in the article “this is much better than putting your money in a bank account. You may lose on some players but you will win on others”

They really shouldn’t be able to promote their bookmaking with comments like that.

 

So. If all futures are only valid for the earlier of 3 years or player relegation then they all end up at zero? That’s what they imply on “how might I lose money” - is that correct? Presumably there must be something they haven’t made clear.

 

Oh I see. You can’t short players. That should give you a clue as to where these player values end up!

 

No you can't short players - this idea has been discussed but I can't see this being added certainly not in the near future.
The 3 year bet is quite clearly explained and yes when a player retires he will go back to his IPO price. A massive conversation topic at the moment is around Messi and Ronaldo and whether they are worth buying/holding and if they will return enough dividends over the rest of their career to cover this drop. There are lots of articles and blogs discussing dividend yield and the probability of a player returning his value over the course of his career which is a major factor when considering buying.

 

When players retire they go to zero?

 

Something I’ve seen mentioned, but never really looked into although it sounds a bit of long term fun.

Is it true you have to be prepared to part with a lot of money to really see a return? I’d rather just do a few quid here and there for a bit a fun...

That article is a bit old now as there have been some updates. So worth looking at the articles i posted but the same rules, logic and ideas still apply.

It is all about % returns, so does depend on what you put in. Even when a player drops you never lose your entire stake like a traditional bet and you can keep for up to 3 years. but as mentioned only bet what you can afford and I would only advise putting in a small amount to begin with to learn the ropes and the platform.

 

I have just put a grand in, got the list of wonderkids in FM20 and hoping to profit in about 5 years or so.

 

To see a large return, yes. I've put in £100 (that was spread over 2-3 months) and my portfolio is currently worth £174.73 (with £15.97 sitting in my account as cash as I'm waiting for some players to fall a little in price before I jump in) but I'm pretty happy with a 90% increase in just 4-5 months of "playing". Much of that was down to buying shares in Haaland at £2.20 (now £6.18 each!) but still, I've got my strategy and gameplan and it seems to be working.

Recent investments since the window closed:

Bree Embolo: Was highly rated ahead of his move to Schalke which didn't pan out too well. Now looking reborn at Gladbach (and still only 22 years old). Will be a starter for Switzerland in the Euros who have a good chance of getting out their group so imagine an impressive performance or 2 in the Euros combined with his good form with Gladbach will see a raise in price over between now and the Euros (and then i'll take the profit). £1.14 currently

Ryan Fraser: His price dropped after the transfer window closed at which point I jumped in. Will be on the move in the summer to someone like Arsenal, Everton etc. Will sell when this happens (but his price will likely increase as the rumours start to fly). £1.19 currently.

Mykola Matvyenko: 23 year old CB for Shaktar. Was heavily linked with Arsenal and Man City in January but stayed put. Will be playing for Ukraine during the Euros and is a bargain price of 61p each - a good performance at the Euros and a move to City would see his price shoot up.

Hwang Hee-Chan: Waiting for his price to drop before I invest. Was heavily linked to Wolves and Valencia in January but Salzburg didn't want to sell due to losing too many players. Will deffo be off in the summer.

Thought I’d take the plunge. I’m going to pick 2-3 players to get behind every month to build up a larger investment (thinking Hagi, Embolo and Cuccurella) and then keep topping the others up, while keeping an eye out for anything else interesting.

I’m only playing small to start with though. Slow and steady...

All in marginal profit.

Is like to go in stronger but I don't have time to dedicate to doing it properly.

 

I sold my stock in Cucho on Friday, only for him to score on Saturday and get a price bounce as a result. Terrible timing on that one. My stock in Bellingham has soared by 88p each and I don't know why and am mulling over cashing in on him as well.

 

Embolo: Now £1.10 - down 3.5%
Fraser: Now £1.29 - up 8%
Matvyenko: Now 72p - up 18%.
Hee-Chan: Now £1.34 - up 9% (although annoyingly I haven't invested yet, thought his price would drop since he didn't move in Jan)

Going well! Made some speculative purchases with some mixed results

- Bought Troy Parrott as thought with Tottenham's injury crisis upfront he could get some game-time. Turns out Jose hates him and I'm now down 5%
- Bought Rodrigo de Paul. I do love a Pozzo player and he's been one that's been touted for a move away for a while. Reckon he'll get it in the summer - even more so if we go down and Udinese need to move some players around to take our crap. Up 1% so far.
- Bought Jonathan David. Saw he was scoring for fun in Belgium and at 19 years old bigger clubs will certainly be looking to snap him up in the summer. Had him a week and he scored a hat-trick and now everyones buying him up. Up 37% (!)
