Rumour in an HITC article that we have made an offer.

Not exactly pulled up trees at burnley but still has potential

Would he just come to sit on the bench as he is at Burnley?

In certain scenarios, links like this make sense. But in other they don’t. It depends on the clubs thoughts and intentions.

Sign Gibson as the No.1 CB for the next 5yrs = Selling ourselves short.

Sell Prodl and bring in Gibson = Get it done.

If it’s true that we have targeted him, my concern would be that much like Dawson, we are going for CB’s who are much the same level as what we have. Quantity over quality etc etc.

I’d love to see a CB signing in the same vein as the bigger (Sarr, Deulofeu...) signings we’ve made. Guaranteed first XI players and concern ourselves with who is being dropped to get them in, rather than whether they are good enough.

He has to leave Burnley. It’s all Mee, Mee, Mee there.

My Middlesbrough supporting mate would rave on and on about him all the time. It’s not quite worked out at Burnley but it wasn’t exactly going great for Tarkowski until Keane was sold. A quality, yet to reach his prime, defender and English as well. Sign him up and get rid of Prodl in the process and also get Vydra chucked in for free

You can see why others were Keane to leave in that case.

Just reading that Burnley won’t let him go until they get a back-up CB in his place.

    SEBASTIAN PRODL.

Also seeing Burnley fans saying it’s common knowledge there that Gibson has been homesick ever since joining and has ‘only ever known Boro’ and the links to his family that brought.

I don't think we'll do this. He will cost probably around £15m and would not be a significant upgrade on what we have. In fact I can't see him getting ahead of the likes of Cathcart, Dawson and Kabs in the pecking order.

If we cannot find a significant upgrade, then it's best we save the money and go again in the summer.

If he has been homesick at Burnley, I can’t see how a move to Hertfordshire would be any better for him

Apparently a private plane at the local airport has been chartered to collect a Burnley player.

He didn't give full names, but he did say the plane was ready for Tarkov ski.

I’d rather spend the money getting the leech Prodl off the books. Pay him half of whatever the parasite needs to just leave.

well it will be easy for us to build a replica Middlesboro - for him to fit in and rediscover his potential- most of it already done on the allotments behind the Rookery.

Not surprised. Dyche has already said he can only go once they have a replacement. Seems to be the outlook of a lot of clubs in this window unsurprisingly.

I’d say we’ll be back in for him if they meet someone.
Good to see we are in for defenders though.

Yes...SSN have reported Burnley rejected our offer for a loan with option to buy.

I'm disappointed this is the player we're after. He's no better, and probably not quite as good, as the players already on the books. Happy that Burnley have rejected this approach.

I would have thought that only a move to Stoke could match the delights of living in Burnley and Middlesbrough. The only way he moves to us is if we house him in L*t*n.

To be honest a defender is only as good as the manager makes him. Pace, height and strength aside, it's all about positioning, communication and organisation.

My only feeling with Gibson is that Dyche is so good at that side of the game, yet doesn't want to play him. Bit of a red flag.

You make sense. He's always baffled me why he doesn't get many minutes. But we are crying out for a natural left sided CB.

Thing is, Tarkowski and Mee are so ingrained in that team that it would be a struggle for a good CB to make them drop one. It’s a bit like if we bought a striker who is superior to Deeney - the likelihood is that Deeney would still be getting a lot it minutes because of his standing at the club.

Gibson went there after they sold Keane and it made sense at the time. But I’m not sure he’s been given equal opportunity to play in all honesty.

If we were after Gibson as our big summer CB signing, I’d be disappointed, like I was with Dawson. But as a January purchase, I quite like it. I’d say he’s at a similar level of ability to Kabasele, Dawson and Cathcart - but crucially he’s young and has the scope to improve. Has also been Captain at Boro so beings leadership qualities.

Think it’s a great deal at a sensible price or loan to be quite honest.

He's not that young. He's 27. If he was early twenties then it would make sense, but his lack of playing time at a club like Burnley, who love a good strong British central defender is very strange.

Burnley are happy to let him go, and apart from us, only Championship clubs want him. Clearly Burnley would want to get their money back, so for £15m, would should just steer well clear and wait until there's a better option in the summer.

Put it this way, would Gibson come in and instantly command a first team spot? Would he be the difference between relegation or survival? I'd say no to both questions. I really don't see why we're going in for him, unless it's to improve the quality of our back up players.

To be honest I thought he was a couple of years younger than that - that being said, he’s still a half-decent age to be able to improve at. I don’t think it’s ‘very strange’ he hasn’t dislodged Mee or Tarkowski - they obviously are mainstays up there. Dyche does love a strong British CB - and he plays 2 of them.

No, he likely wouldn’t instantly command a starting spot. But we have to be realistic with our targets in this window - real, top quality won’t come due to our league position. We’ve made our bed in that sense. You say ‘clearly’ Burnley would want their money back on him - I’ve not seen that said by them anywhere. I think they would know that if you spend £15m on a player and don’t play him, you can’t expect to get your money back. Dyche has said he can go on loan if they source a replacement - so it would be a loan. We wouldn’t immediately be in it for £15m.

You disagree and that’s fine. But I think it’s a decent realistic target and I’m quite attracted to the fact he has been captain elsewhere. This squad lacks leaders.

I'm not disagreeing he wouldn't be welcome at the club, but he wouldn't be an upgrade on any player we currently have. For me, this is the problem.

Going by the Burnley forum they are not too fussed about him going, and they only see him as a backup in case they get a few injuries. They said they thought he was an unnecessary signing for the money as they never play him. For me there are a lot of red flags, and I think Burnley would want their money back....why wouldn't they? We are the club wanting to buy and Burnley don't need to sell. If we want him, we've got to make them an offer they would accept. Clearly our previous offer has been rejected, no doubt we'll come back again, but I cannot see us going higher than £10m, and I don't think Burnley will do business for that sum.

Remember, the last Burnley reject we took from them didn't go too well.

I can understand what you’re saying about the fee. But Dyche has said he can go on loan if they get a replacement. We don’t need to get caught up on what fee they might want when it’s been said they will loan him in the first instance.

Why would they even need a replacement? He's made just 1 PL appearance for them all season.
Burnley are out the FA Cup now as well.

Managers love it when they can have decent quality players in their squad who don’t kick up a fuss at not playing, just in case they get some injuries. Wenger did it for years with Walcott. If players like Gibson have any ambition they should ask for a transfer.
