Marvellous. So it appears I've been booked onto flight 828. Anyone watched Manifest of sky?

See you lot in 5 years.

A while ago on here I asked about the Keys etc. We're going to San Diego for a week and then Key Largo next weekend... Recommendations for both welcome!

For San Diego do the hop on hop off bus tour. It's quite a spread out area so probably the best way to see a lot of things. Go to a proper Mexican restaurant, not an American one. The Gaslight district has so many bars and restaurants and is perfect for craft beer (if you're in to that sort of thing). Coronado is very nice and has the hotel where Some Like it Hot was filmed. Lots of military stuff (it's the home of the US marines) so be prepared for US patriotism overload. San Diego old town gives you an idea of what the place might have been like back in the day when the Mexicans lived there.

Overall it's one of my favourite places in the US. ;)

Thanks Nascot, great suggestions! Any specific Mexican restaurants you’d recommend?

Anyone been to Costa Rica before? Considering going with my partner this summer.

Yes its brilliant if you like wildlife. Where are you planning to go ?
Standard first visits usually take in Tortuguero, Monte Verde Cloud Forest, Arenal volcano reserve and somewhere beachy like Manuel Antonio. We stopped off at a few other birdy places in between and are planning to go again to different reserves...maybe this summer.

Reading this thread makes me realise how pathetic my holidays are. Most of the holidays you lot go on must cost £5,000 minimum. Probably much more. How do you all afford it??

Makes my week in spain or greece look like an utter joke. And even that costs me 2 grand or so!

I've been. Very, very nice. Need to pick the right season and location weather-wise, though. I think there was a thread on it some time ago, search on here!

I basically work to pay for the mortgage and holidays. Anything else is secondary. 2 nice holidays costing c£5k+ a head and one cheaper week in Europe in spring. I have 5 weeks hols a year and the objective is to spend every day of those 5 weeks and the associated weekends far away from the UK. We don't spend any time on a beach at all. The objective is to come back to work more tired than before we went away. Had a great holiday touring Greece a couple of years ago - lovely country.

Between the 2 of us, yes. I pay £10k, Mrs TuT pays £10k. We both earn so its not like I need to pay for a family of 5 out of one salary, so yes we're pretty lucky in that respect.

Suggest USA I've crossed the pond and returned 21 times, not as expensive as in the brochures when you put the bits together yourself, you've basically got flights, accommodation, car hire/internal travel and food/entertainment anyone after any advice just send me a PM. Makes a lot of difference re flights when you actually go! Mike

My mate from my old local went. Humidity like he's never experienced and possibly the biggest spider he'd ever seen in his room before the power went out.

The 2 most painful insect stingers, the bullet ant and the tarantual hawk wasp are both found there and I saw both. Apparently you lose all control if bitten/stung due to the pain.
And that's before you start considering the snakes.... :)

Great if you are fascinated by wildlife, the howler monkeys, cappuchin monkeys, sloths, reptiles, birds, insects etc. Otherwise no point in going.

    Yes I agree.

I saved thousands doing things independently, mostly using spare seats on holiday flights. Did it in half an hour online a few months ago.

Just waiting for our flight tickets to arrive from Thomas Cook, and then off we go!

I absolutely echo this. It's right up there in my very best holidays list. The people are friendly and helpful. If you like wildlife and don't want to go off trekking, this is the place. You can literally sit by your hotel pool and see dozens of exotic bird species. In addition to the list of destinations we spent time on the Osa peninsular at an eco-lodge in the rain forest, which was fabulous. Monkeys, coati, sloths, pelicans and all the other birds everywhere, then you can do a night walk to see the snakes, poison-dart frogs etc.

We are looking at Osa as part of our next visit. Did you stay at El Remanso Lodge ? We also visited Sarapiqui and Carara as part of our last visit, mainly for the birds.

The one's i've posted in this thread were probably £1,5k (3K total). Me and my GF put £150 a month into a holiday fund which works out as £3600 a year. Once the money's in a standing order I don't really miss it. Helps not having kids! Some of my mates spend £150 on one night out...

Decided against Costa Rica for now and going to Thailand for a couple of weeks instead in late July. Few nights in Bangkok then some time down in Phuket and the surrounding islands.

Ha. We are probably going to Thailand in late Autumn. A few days in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and the national parks to the west of Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

You'll love it. The food is some of the best I've ever had. I would have no hesitation in going back again. The first time I was there for six weeks and didn't want to leave. The last time was more business related but nevertheless loved it. Highly recommended Malaysia too.
