I'll tell you the scariest thing, for the first time in a while, I'm approaching a league game without fear, boredom or even nerves. That's a testament to how quickly Pearson & co have changed the mood around the club. We're playing Tottenham at home without the fear of a battering and more importantly (I hate to say it) a loss doesn't feel like it will break our season.

Amazingly despite our awful start to the season and the 8 league places between us a win here would leave us only five points behind Tottenham. Bonkers right!?

    FORM:

Last year we beat Spurs 2-1 at home in a memorable game under the sun. Remind yourself of that wonderful day here: https://www.watfordfc.com/teams/first-team/match-report-watford-2-1-tottenham-hotspur#t=0:01

We don't need to talk anymore our form, it's beautiful. The new management team has done wonders, we're scoring, keeping clean sheets. Sarr is looking every bit of £40 million, Deulofeu is a man reformed, Doucoure now looks a PSG player, Deeney is scoring from open play, we're keeping clean sheets with Mariappa at right-back. It's bloody brilliant.

Spurs, on the other hand, are struggling, their talisman is injured it took them 180 minutes to beat Middlesborough, they lost to Liverpool, they lost to Southampton and they drew to Norwich in their last three league games.

We top the Premier League form table over the last 5 matchdays:

    5 played
    4 won
    1 draw
    11 scored
    2 lost.

    Spurs sit 15th with:

    5 played
    1 won
    1 draw
    3 loss
    4 scored
    7 conceded

    TEAM NEWS:

Nigel Pearson doesn't seem to rotate much so I can't see much change here if any. Instagram says Femenia is back in training. I believe Kabasele is still banned? 3 match ban and we've only played Bournemouth & Tranmere since then I believe. Hughes should be fit enough for the bench. Puesseto could make the bench. Pereyra has 2 in 2 so it might push for a start.

Spurs are in a bit of a pickle. Eriksen has one foot at Inter, Kane is injured till April, N'Dombele is not fit, Sissoko is out for the season, Lloris will miss this as will Ben Davies. Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica may make his debut.

Lo Celso may well start and we pray that Eric Disasterclass Dier starts.

Interestingly, Spurs record without Kane isn't much different.

    TACTICS:

Again, I expect our best chances to come down the wings. Both Spurs full-backs, Rose & Aurier are suspect. They can be got at by our in-form wingers. They may possibly pay Tanganga who's capable but young and raw.

Alli with deep runs could trouble our sometimes sleepy defence but they look totally reformed over Pearson so it'll be interesting to see how they cope. Lucas's & Son pace will be worrying. I can see Son going through the middle flanked by Lucas & Lamela.

I expect Capoue & Chalobah to dominate Winks and whoever he's partnered with.

Deeney will have a tough time against Vertonghen & Alderweirled. But he did sit Davinson Sanchez down on his backside last season before turning that game around.

I'm not really sure how Spurs play under Mourinho and you can tell that on the pitch they don't have a clear identity either yet.

I was planning on going to this, then changed my mind due to the early kick off, then got offered two free tickets, Bristol Rovers supporting chum offered to drive, thus I agreed to go. This is my cool story.

Close. I think he's available as he would have served the 3rd of 3 matches in the replay against Tranmere and as it was due to have been played yesterday, the FA have agreed to let him off one of the matches and allow the ban to be allocated against the delayed replay on the understanding he doesn't play in that game. Because they love us.

Will Fry Days be open this Saturday for 11.30 chips? Or will have to go to the other one? I prefer the chips at Fry Days. The website says 12.00 opening, so I'm a little nervous.

If Fry Days doesn’t open for business at 11am on Saturday then I give them 0 out of 10 for entrepreneurship.

Hope Elton attends as he did last season (and it’s the 3rd anniversary of GT’s passing) to enjoy another 2-1 win.

If Fry Days is open early enough then if Son fancies a nice battered cod and large chips it would slow him down in the match.

It was only a 2 game ban. One for the red (2 yellows), and one extra as it was his second red card..

    Good write-up.

Absolutely right, it's nice not to feel nervous or defeated going into a game this season! The turnaround under Nige has been incredible and he was exactly what we needed. Credit also has to go to Gino and Scott for realising things needed to be changed and acting on it effectively. They stuck their necks out appointing Pearson after his last two stints at Derby and in Belgium but made got the decision correct at a vital time in our season!

As for the game, I think it's a game we can definitely win but we can't get over confident. Even with their injury problems they still have a quality side and a world class Manager. Son, as pointed out previously, always seems to play well against us and Dele has a good goalscoring record against us too.

We have to play to our strengths which is press high up the pitch and play with a high intensity and tempo. If we can do that i'm sure we can win the game. We have to test them out defensively as I think they lack a bit of pace there and also a bit of confidence with their current form.

Looking slightly ahead to the Villa game, I wouldn't be upset with a draw on Saturday followed up by 3 points at Villa!

This period of games (the next 4) against Spurs, Villa, Everton & Brighton are massive for our season! It COULD propel us towards a top 10 place or leave us fighting it out for survival!

Anyway, f**k all that, we were on 9 points before we played Man Utd on 21st of December and here we are about to head into the 18th of January sat on 22 points with a genuine chance of survival! We'd have all laughed at that prospect before the United game. What a time to be alive!

    Utter piffle.

Because the 1st match of his ban - the first game hasn't been replayed yet, he's still suspended as you can't be unsuspended until the tie is complete which is why he missed Bournemouth.

Hope the replay isn't delayed anymore.

Kabasele's red card offence normally results in a one game suspension, but he was suspended for an extra match because it was his second red card this season. He has now served the two game suspension (Tranmere and Bournemouth). The F.A. Cup rules state: "a player who has been suspended according to the disciplinary procedures under the Rules of The Association may play in a postponed or replayed match after the term of his suspension has expired."

This could be a tricky fixture - not the gimme that some on here are thinking it will be.

I'm hoping Pearson manages to get the players properly motivated for this match - if we go into it even 40% below par there's a chance that Tottenham could shock us.

It would be typical Watford - beat Man Utd, Wolves and Bournemouth, only to slip up at home to these.

There's probably an opportunity to rest a few regulars before the ridiculous fixture congestion kicks in, so even if they're in the squad I'm not expecting Sarr, Deulofeu, Capoue or Doucoure to play the full 90 - probably only the first half until the game's safe.

    4-1

Looking forward to this one. Don’t think I’ve made any predictions on here for a while. So I’ll just stick to making my own with the bookies, could retire once this goes my way.

Anyone with better tech skills than I able to dig up Pearson’s record with mourinho and put it on here. ?

I had cheesy chips at Fry Days earlier this season. Had to wait 10 minutes for them and the 'cheese' was no more than a plasticy tasteless gloop - never again. So the emergency cheese supply is a good idea.

btw. Fry Days' chips are usually pretty tasty (without cheese of course) but I refuse to pay the 40p or whatever they charge for the mini plastic pots of ketchup they offer, ie:
Ketchup 1.jpg despite them being less (fewer) messy than the usual other alternative (not sold at Fry Days), ie: ketchup 2.jpg

So I bring a bottle of squeezy ketchup with me to all home matches now, although it is usually confiscated following a pat-down search at the turnstiles and they just won't accept my valid explanation. Actually - top ketchup tip - I do help myself to some from the table at the burger van a bit further down the road (shhhh!). I justify this blatant theft by occasionally buying an over-priced cheese hot dog from there.

    2-1 to the 'orns.

Will Pussetto play? His versatility could make him a good option as a sub. If he's any good that is.

When's the last time a Watford player scored on their debut?

So nice to go into a game feeling optimistic.

    2-1 to the Golden Boys.

    Thanks for making me laugh.

Take the ketchup label off, walk with a limp & say to the turnstyle op it's your emergency blood supply & he can taste it if he doesn't believe you & I reckon you should get in.

Son will have to be watched like a hawk. It's clear they still have issues in the dressing room. Surprised that they put out such a strong team for the FA Cup replay and Middlesbrough showed that their defence can be got at.

Tanganga is relatively inexperienced and a target. I hope Eriksen plays instead of Lo Celso. Lo Celso is the epitome of the modern central midfielder. Can defend, attack, create and score and is a far better player than Eriksen was at the same age. A delight to watch at Rosario Central and Betis but not really given the chance at PSG and Tottenham as yet.

Gazzaniga is a great reflexive keeper and distributor but his decision making has always been suspect. Musso, Andrada and Benitez are ahead of him for the Argentina jersey unsurprisingly. We will have to work very hard again and impose ourselves and limit their chances as they have far more of a cutting edge than any team we have faced since Liverpool despite the absence of Kane. But they can be got at and we have great weapons as well upfront. Perhaps Pussetto will feature on the bench as well. This and the Villa game are another set of cup finals. Six points and no injuries would be ideal and Kabasele should be back too.
