    Quote from that article:

Solanke's last shot on target 19th October.

    Last 11 matches:
    W1 D1 L9 Goals for: 6 (4 of which were in November)

They had one shot on target in our match, in the 9th minute. That was the third time in their last seven league games in which they have failed to register more than one shot on target.

That article is very interesting read! Not surprisingly the comments from Bournemouth fans are scathing. The word arrogance is used a few times. I'm pretty sure every comment is negative!

It's a bit arrogant, Simon, to suggest that: "we don't want to become a team that's going to lower ourselves to other teams that are going direct." Lower ourselves?? Do you really think you could lower yourself any further than you already have? At least if you (and the team) had already 'lowered' yourselves by using the long ball a bit more - and a lot more accurately - we quite possibly would be in a much healthier PL position than we are at present. Really! There are times when you do talk a load of tosh! Never ideal for a club captain.

Looking at the long ball stats this is rubbish:
    • So they won't lower themselves to play like Liverpool? They are playing more attractive football then Liverpool?
    • They won't lower themselves to play like us, with a whopping 9.5% higher long balls on average
Long balls so far this season:

    1: 1648 : Sheffield United
    2: 1538 : Burnley
    3: 1427 : Everton
    4: 1415 : Southampton
    5: 1404 : Wolverhampton Wanderers
    6: 1378 : Liverpool
    7: 1357 : Newcastle United
    8: 1341 : West Ham United
    9: 1335 : Watford
    10: 1297 : Brighton and Hove Albion
    11: 1294 : Aston Villa
    12: 1238 : Crystal Palace
    13: 1219 : AFC Bournemouth
    14: 1218 : Norwich City
    15: 1194 : Chelsea
    16: 1177 : Arsenal
    17: 1172 : Tottenham Hotspur

To be fair most of Bournemouth's long balls on Sunday were from the back of the net to the centre circle.

It’s always confused me when players and managers say ‘playing out’ from the back and passing football is the ‘right way’ to play.

When was it decided that a pass has to be a particular length to be considered right or wrong?

Nothing wrong in playing it out from the back. As long as you have decent players who are in form.
When you have mediocre players who are out of form and an inexperienced keeper you end up losing at home by 3 goals to the likes of us.

I for one hope they continue to "play it out from the back" ie: ineptly pass the ball between defenders to the left and right of the box and the goalie, inaccurately, and let the opposition run in, dispossess and get a chance at goal.

They can keep doing that all season as far Im concerned.

They honestly think they are man city or barcelona

It's a trend and I think coaches/managers that are brainwashed into playing this way will look back in 10 years or so and say...."I can't believe I used to play like that".

It's fashionable to play like this and it's seen as the "right way to play". No it isn't. It's suicide football, but try telling coaches of this system that. It's idealistic football for the very best players only. This style of football is reserved for the likes of Barcelona and Man City, certainly not Bournemouth. It is like the keeper rolling the ball out to an opposition striker a couple of times a match and saying "go on then, try and score". You're giving away great chances cheaply to the other side. You are raising their interest in something that should be completely dead.

I love the close passing, tiki-taka football. I was brought up on it with Barca, but I also love the long ball. It's so exciting with the ball in flying about in the opponent's final third. But as with any system you have to have players who can do it. Long ball will always favour a smaller club and tiki-taka favours the elite. Both systems are good and both systems provide winning exciting football, but they both have to be played well in order for it to be successful.

Horses for courses. Play to your strengths or otherwise you will always fail.

Totally understandable that they wouldn't want to lower themselves to passing a ball like Capoue who can hit a cross field pass 60 yards directly to feet. We all saw the worth of their players trying to pass no more than 5 yards at a time and score the immaculate 100 pass goal. I definitely want them to continue playing as they did on Sunday.

At half time some pundits started defending the young goalkeeper for the goal saying it’s not his fault, which is right they directed the blame straight at Eddie wow. He’s the one giving them the instruction to keep passing out from the back.
Then on another analysis Souness blames the players a bit more as they should know there’s a time and place to do it. I think Richards said same on match of the day. For me both to blame but the coaching staff more. Look at arsenal for example better players but still couldn’t get it right and ultimately it gets emery the boot.

We coach our u-10’s to play it out from the back every club needs a philosophy and that’s ours some age groups do it more than others.
There’s a big difference as we have some rules which allows this to happen, 1st a retreat line third of the way back up the pitch which can’t have attacking players in from a goalkick until a defenders touched it. 2nd no offsides. I still coach our boys if in doubt boot it out and sometimes it’s best to punt it. Then it comes down to their decision making.

In my eyes professional players should be able to play anyway they are told but at the same time respect the opponent and play to your strengths. If I was muff I’d be way more direct as in GT’s model of get the ball in final third as fast as we can and create opportunities.

That’s what made Dean’s performance as ref so good. Think it was only twice in the whole game that he gave them a FK for what I would consider a dive. However multiple times he told them to get up and you could see it on their faces towards the end that when they fell down, the were resided to having to pick themselves up off the floor.

WOW the naivety in that is ridiculous. They don't pass through teams and have picked up 4 points in their last 11 games. They are not just getting out battled by teams they are being well and truly outplayed, Brighton outplayed them, we outplayed them as did West Ham. We played better football than them out passing was quicker and the movement was better.

It definitely makes sense to coach youth football in this way as playing possession football = more touches on the ball = develop greater technique and ball skills. That sets them up for any sort of professional football in the future, whether it be at Burnley or Man City. Playing Burnley-esque long-ball as a youth will leave you lacking as a footballer later on in life - so congrats on teaching them the right way (although of course punting when under pressure is definitely a necessity at times!)

We play an age up as we’ve a talented bunch. You’d be broken hearted playing some of the teams. They have a keeper who can give it a good welly over the top to somebody goal hogging in an (offside position) scoring a few. And we have to explain that these goals won’t count soon so what’s the point in doing this. But with kids it’s the here and now scoring the goals. Keeping them playing is hard at times as all they want to do is kick and run.

    Premier League penalties awarded

    2018/19
    9 - Bournemouth (3rd highest)
    11 - Crystal Palace (2nd highest)
    1 - Watford (joint bottom)

    2019/20 - after 22 games
    1 - Bournemouth (joint bottom)
    3 - Crystal Palace (joint 6th)
    4 - Watford (joint 2nd highest)

Or to put it another way:

    2018/19
    Bournemouth - a penalty every 4.2 games
Crystal Palace - a penalty every 3.5 games
    Watford - a penalty every 38 games

    2019/20
    Bournemouth - a penalty every 22 games
Crystal Palace - a penalty every 7.3 games
    Watford - a penalty every 5.5 games

OK, the penalties per games figures could quickly change with a couple of penalty awards, but overall the statistics tell and interesting (if not unexpected!) story. Quite a swing between seasons.

I posted this update on Muff game thread. It’s still awaiting one like from it. But as humans we often have bias towards we assume to be the truth. I know I do.

In the interest of balance it isn’t quite as obvious for Bournemouth as it look:

    Penalties won
    Season - Watford v Muff
    19/20 - 4 v 1
    18/19 - 1 v 9
    17/18 - 6 v 3
    16/17 - 3 v 10
    15/16 - 7 v 4
    Total (before current season) 21 v 27.

So muff had on average won 1.5 more penalties per season than us. Still a big switch to this season, but nowhere much as pronounced.

    ——

That said, Muff are a diving bunch of cheats, I couldn’t find the stats on opposition players getting red cards anywhere to check if this is just me thinking it or objectively true.

The pitch they play on is only a quarter of a full size pitch. But if you coach the kids technique and they apply it you’d be surprised at their ability.

They most likely play on a 5/7 a side pitch from the matches I've seen around that age range. I am however having flashbacks to being coached at u12 level (on a full size pitch) where one of the drills was all to stand on the halfway line and see who could kick the ball the furthest. No wonder I was never any good at playing.
