On my return from my Mother's home in St Albans and weighed down with some of my old vinyl, 'A Single Man' included,I saw the poorly fox.
    Wrong.
    It was 1.15pm.
I rushed in and quickly put down some meatballs, with arsen and sulphur to help the mange.
Pesky cat that looks a little like Ford came and was trying to eat them. I"m not sure if the pf returned but we need to set a humane trap and get him to a vet.
Anyone have any advice on trapping humanely?
It would help if my neighbour put the wildlife camera up that we bought in the summer!

    Lucky you, lovely creatures.
3 legged Fox seems to understand the feeding routine now and I often see her wolfing (foxing?) down the cat food left early morning and evening whilst staring at us through the window as if to say "cheers". However the latch goes on the back door and she limps off at great (relative) speed.

Sorry no idea on trapping. I had the same concerns for our Fox though the feeding seems to be working at present. Try advice from rspca or tiggywinkles ?

I'd have plenty of advice on trapping squirrels (caught 15 in the last 30 months!) but no idea about foxes. As TUT says, Tiggywinkles will offer sound advice.

Give the rspca a buzz. They were helpful with my goose problem.

Poorly fox here this morning at 9am.
I called Tiddywinkles who said call the Fox Project.
New meds required, back on psorinum for a week and arnica.
If this doesn't help I'm to contact Hill Top sanctuary in Potters Bar,who will come and trap.

Because my 'Palahniukian' mens group was overtaken by entryists masquerading as fellow travellers I've decided to start afresh with an even more exclusive organisation: The Forced Rhubarb Club*.

This is not good news. All rhubarb should be free to choose. Equality for rhubarb.
Guess I should be taking the black cloth off the asparagus patch in about a month and covering with "chicken pellets"??

  18. Bwood_Horn

This is the "...one month before the growing season starts..." add the fish, blood and bone (also when you stop harvesting at the solstice). Chicken pellets are for over-wintering. This will be year 2 for you so (I think) you can harvest 1 spear per plant?

  19. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Yes, one spear per plant this spring. So I should forget the chicken pellets as I've missed the boat, but douse in fish blood and bone in about a month ??

ISTR that it's manure for 'leaf' growth and fish, blood and bone (FBB) for 'roots'. Seeing as the bed is only a year old there should be plenty of manure 'in it' still. Ayletts sold me a 5kg plastic tub of FBB (the cardboard boxes fall apart in the damp and the stuff sets into a rock hard lump) for £9. I would urge you to wear a facemask when throwing the stuff about. Virtually every- and anything in the garden will benefit for a 'dosing' with FBB before the spring.

Got a free day on Saturday as the wife and babe are off out to see friends, so thought I might get into the garden and firstly do a bit of tidying and secondly any other chores one can do in mid-Jan. The question is, any suggestion about what these chores might be? Is it too late/too early to put some fresh compost down for summer flowering plants?

Should have thought the ground would be too wet and cold.

Mulching is supposed to be a good thing, although I am always too lazy to do it. But even that might be a waste of time if the soil is cold and damp as you will just be sealing that in.

I'm not doing much at the moment other than cutting back overgrown shrubs, grasses etc. Can't wait for the weather to warm (and dry) up, tbh.

Thanks - no manure, just plenty of general potting compost when I planted the roots 8 months ago. Will get some FBB at the weekend.

I should think you will need something. Any nutrients in the potting compost will be long gone.

I discovered an asparagus bed in my newly inherited allotment last year. The problem I found was that there is a very short window between the spears appearing and them getting too long and stringy to be edible - ie they grow really quickly once they pop their heads out. Since, at best, I only get down to the allotment once a week, I usually wasn't quick enough. I will try to be a bit more vigilant this year.

Bwood, do you just scatter the BFB or dig it in?

  27. Bwood_Horn

    Bwood_Horn Squad Player

Just scatter and let the weather/worms do the rest. I do put it down when rain is forecast. Any plants get a sprinkle in the hole before replanting and re-potting.

Cutting last year’s growth of the buddleia right back is usually recommended for February, but with the mild winter we’re having I’m sure January will be fine.

Yes we luckily get LTT's in flocks of about 8. Also the occasional marsh t1t which don't often come to gardens being very much a woodland bird (despite the name !).

Laurence and Iris live on the Potterheigham Road.
On Tuesday they trapped one of the feral cats that live in the barn opposite and took her/him to the local vet to be neutered.
    How lovely!
Big garden birdwatch next weekend everyone!
