Whyever would Kalvin Phillips want to come to us given our and Leeds' current positions? And Phillips is a local boy.

You can create any wish-lists you like but if they're completely impractical it's pointless.

See my point above. It’s about ambition to sign a better class of player.

Whyever would Pereyra leave a cushy number at CL winners Juventus and join Watford? A similarly ‘impractical’ transfer that we made happen.

As everyone keeps pointing out, Pearson built the bones of that Leicester team etc etc. Why can’t we sell that to players like him?

If Messi could be convinced he'd be here.

We'd only be attractive for an increase in wages and raising a players profile right now. Nothing about this club to anyone looking in externally screams stability, opportunity or player development. So anyone we could attract is probably after a payday.

Of course I know what option I'd rather have, it's the same as you but it's never ever going to happen. The Pozzo's aren't going to spend £15-25million on Phillips and he's never going to want to leave Leeds to come here either.

We probably don't even need a PL standard striker, our current strike force is playing with such a low level of confidence I would say we not even a Championship level. A couple of our misses today would be called poor if they happened in the non league.

Benrahma is unreal, albeit not what we need right now but just to look at in general.

Exactly. If we went down I wouldn't want Deeney and Gray as our strikers even at that level.

Really small thing to cling onto and base comments on, but there has always been a player there in Kabbs, and that clip last week of Pearson having a chat with him potentially shows Pearson knows that too. He certainly seemed to up his game today and be playing for him.

Another laugh is that they are the same people who think there are clubs lining up to take our misfiring strikers and others on very good wages off our hands!

As expected, a highly motivated performance and we gave Liverpool a game. That's all you can really ask for. We won't score goals because our finishing is the worst in professional football. I think you'll be hard pressed to find another club in professional football in the world as bad as us. It's just comical. I don't even get excited when we attack anymore because I know the conclusion for all our attacks. Only 7 goals scored in 16 games (excluding the two penalties) tells you all you need to know.

I'm pleased with the performance, but we end up losing 2-0 which is a standard defeat, but at least it's not a thrashing. I hope the players will take encouragement from this game, but it does seem futile as no matter how well we play, how many good chances we create, our players are incapable of being composed in the moment to score goals. The best result we can possibly get is 0-0, and even if we draw the remaining matches 0-0 it will not give us enough points to stay up.

I think it's unlikely we'll not score another goal this season, but it is an outside possibility and worth a small punt as the odds would be quite good on that.

We need a new striker, there's no other possibility. Hopefully Pedro will give us something, or getting Welbeck back and fit will also be a major boost.

From today's game Hughes was brilliant. That's the best I've ever seen him play. He was everywhere, a truly awesome performance. Deulofeu gave us a veneer of quality and Sarr had some very good moments, apart from his horror miss.

Kabs was outstanding and Kiko had a great game out of position. That's two impressive performances from him in a row.

I think if we continue with this desire against United it could provide dividends, but our finishing is a killer. We cannot score goals, and until that ever changes our situation is hopeless, no matter how well we play.

In 2007 in our last “ last throw of the dice scenario “ to stay in the premier league we bought in January
    John Eustace
    Will Hoskins
    Lee Williamson
    Steve Kabba
    Gareth Williams
    Johan Cavalli
    Cedric Avinel and
    Douglas Rinaldi on loan
Out of those eight players I think we would all agree we only got value out of the first one!

Just finished watching the game and I must say considering we are playing arguably the best side in europe atm on their turf and the position we are in, with a new manager I can walk away with my head held a little bit high.
Sure we didn’t get a point ( wasn’t expecting 1 and the majority on here including myself were expecting a 4,5,6-0 defeat ).
For the deeney haters out there, who else do we have that in our squad that is better then him right now ?? Honest question...
We have our backs up against the wall and this was the hardest possible game for Pearson to come into but I believe personally I could see a change in that 90min which fills me with even the slightest of hopes to stay up.
It will be tough but I have faith somehow

Why is it silly? He played in the CL final. That was literally his last game for them. He played.
You can throw around words like ‘silly’ to try and end the debate all you want - we are bottom, but we’ve been PL for 5 years. I think we should take the latter into account when identifying transfer targets and not belittle ourselves by focusing on the latter.

Drawing comparisons between convincing Messi to join us from Barcelona and Phillips from Leeds actually draws me to think you are the one being a bit ‘silly’ really!

And you’ve chosen to highlight my comment on Phillips and ignore the one about Watkins and Benrahma - only to then reply to someone else regarding this players. Odd really.

Eh? The same people? It’s literally the first time I’ve made a comment like this. You have no idea of the ‘type’ of person I am thanks.

And my point is valid. Regardless of our informed opinions of Gray and Deeney, if they were made available for transfer for reasonable prices in January, we’d be able to sell both.

Made 9 starts and 4 sub appearances in his final season and Juventus got eliminated in the round of 16.

But hey let’s eliminate a whole season from history to make a point

I don’t think there are actually that many ‘Deeney haters’ in reality. Just some are realistic about the player he is now and think we could have better.

Yep. There would be some desperate Championship sides who are chasing the Premier League golden ticket willing to waste some money on them. Two players who we could quite easily ship off I think, purely for their (long since expired and now irrelevant) reputations in that league.

Okay, I’m not too small to admit I got it wrong about his last season. Genuine error. But I stand by my point. I’m happy as the day is long to debate it or anything else - quite why people feel their opposing opinions are the only opinion is town is what I don’t get.

I’m literally just debating the Kalvin Phillips point with you.

There is ONE league place between us in the English football pyramid right now. I just don’t think the suggestion made any sense at all, that is all.

Another point - if Doucoure continually misfires from CM, as well as Quina, I would be against introducing Hungbo from the U23’s. Goal scoring midfielder who is doing it every week - not sure what more they can do really.

Well you’ve already agreed to a point that it made some sense by saying he would increase his wage and profile by playing for us.
We can agree to disagree. But Leeds we’re winning the league last season and ended up where they still are - maybe he knows that too and thinks there’s more chance we stay up than Leeds getting promoted. I can agree that it would be a hard push to get him - but not impossible which is what you seem to be suggesting.

My overall point is I think we should mainly be looking at players we want, not players others want rid of. Go and get some players that some clubs don’t want to lose by paying for them.

Another thing that Pearson said on Thursday night was that 'if they're good enough they're old enough' and he would be taking advice from Mullins regularly regarding who might be ready to step up to the plate.

He also said that we are currently in a difficult position for a new, young player to step in and be expected to perform at the top level immediately and consistently though.

That's a good point. Pearson said he was willing to give some of the youth a chance. As we seem to be heading one way, why not give them a shot? Replace some of the mis-firing
strikers and midfielders. Cannot do any worse - however, we might even start scoring a few goals.... Having said that, Pearson probably has a plan, and I respect his choices from
here going forward. I would like to think however, he makes changes a bit earlier than he did today.

Regarding Phillips. He's playing for a much bigger club, is a local lad and a crowd favourite and has every chance of swapping places with us next season anyway so what possible motivation might he have to come to us? It would hardly be wanting to play in the PL because he's best to stay where he is on that front.

So by all means be ambitious on the transfer suggestion front but please do temper it with a bit of reality.

Did anyone else notice Sarr looked really disappointed at FT? More so than anyone else of the team. To me that proves he is trying and wants
    us to succeed.

  35. Burnsy

I still don’t see why it’s realistic on the terms you’ve set out?

‘Every chance’ of swapping places? They have a chance - one which they’ve blown more than once in the recent past.
Bigger club? Yes. But not as wealthy. Sunderland are bigger as well but should that’s deter us from ever approaching a player they have that is deemed capable?

I get what you and others are saying. And it’s all theoretical anyway. But talking like a player of his stature and where he is right now being beyond us is something I don’t buy into, that’s all.
