    I'm in then!
Can I bring Dave as 'technical support'?
He has offered to stick a needle up his nose and call everyone 'Nigel' although he will no longer wear a floppy hat,as this may stretch him overly.

Looks like it could be Quique Setien.

I think he's excellent. Even Barca were looking at him at the beginning of the year. After all the names we've been linked with, I'd be delighted if he is our new boss.

Odds have dramatically moved this morning and now he's favourite. Watch this space!!

  4. I know nothing about Setién but looking at his career, apart from a bit of time at Betis, there’s nothing to suggest he’s experienced at the level we need.

I know nothing about him, but replacing Quique with another Quique would lead to some cringeworthy bants from Lineker and the lads, so it's a reluctant no from me.

We'll win the World Cup with Quique Setien in charge. He's that good.

Dont think we have the team to play the football setien likes. Sounds exciting though, but think it will take time. Not what we need right now, unfortunately.

£10 on Setien at 14/1 may not have been the long shot I originally thought. We'll see soon I guess...

Yeah agreed I would be happy enough with this. Sets up to play entertaining football and likes his players to keep the ball, his Betis team did concede goals but they also knew where the back of the net was. I genuinely think our more technical players would thrive under Settiens tactics and set up, although I am not convinced our defenders would be good enough as his style does require defenders to be good on the ball. Certainly a better option than the other names being mentioned and as you mentioned it was rumoured that Barca were admirers of him not so long ago.

I don't know, as I've only ever heard him speak Spanish. He's very interesting and has a very strong view on how to play the game. Not sure it fits with our cloggers in defence, because he likes to play out from the back, but he's a real student of the game. His nickname is The Teacher.

He's an intelligent guy, so I'd be surprised if he didn't speak English. Probably similar to Flores I would expect.

Oddschecker has Hughes at 11/4, Hughton 10/3, Allardyce 5/1 and then Setien at 7/1. Nobody odds on anymore suggests nobody has a clue!

    Two observations:

    1) Given that our fate now probably lies more in "heart", "passion" and good old "cojones" than it does in tactical nous and given that we are now scrabbling around for anyone desperate/stupid enough to join, would it be ridiculous to suggest it should be given to Troy in a player/manager capacity until the end of the season to see if he can get a tune out of any of our talented under-performers?

    2) Interesting observation made on Totally Football yesterday. The table shows we are just 6 points off safety which doesn't sound too bad. But that's Everton and realistically they are not going to go down regardless of how badly they're playing at the moment. You could also make a good case that the teams above them should avoid trouble: Brighton have a good manager who seems to be making an impact on that squad, Villa look really good and Newcastle are objectively a good squad even if their fans will always expect more. Realistically, we have to look at the points tallies of those teams that we would expect to be struggling at the end of the season, the likes of Sheff Utd ( who are currently 11 points ahead of us).

I'm going to put a wedge on Setién. I'm very confident we're getting him.

Of course he could turn us down because of our league position. He's someone who would not take a job just to the end of the season though. We'd have to sell him the vision of what the club is all about. He needs to believe in the club and buy into the ethos. This is my impression of him anyway.

    Yes, Quique does speak English.

When Kevin Prince Boateng was at Las Palmas, they communicated solely in English. Let's face it, he worked on Gran Canaria for years, if he couldn't speak English, he'd have never found anyone to talk to.

I did follow Las Palmas for a few years, when Ibiza were essentially without a team and I'd be delighted to see Quique here.

The problem with these betting markets, unless someone is backed into odds on, even £100 quid on an outcome can make the market move.

Would he be the short-term hire they’ve spoken about us looking for? Or would he be coming in with the idea that this season is a write-off, and he’s charged with changing the identity of the squad and rebuilding in his clear vision, much like Bielsa at Leeds?

If it’s the latter, I’m okay with that if it means he’s given the chance to build a team to play his football over the next few years, as he’s clearly well thought of in Spain.

Quique Setien is 61, doesn't sound like too much of a long-term fix or progressive manager.

    Arteta seems an interesting shout.

Taken from L’Equipe who say ‘we offered him the job’ in a phone call - surely we’d hold talks first?

But if all these rumours of knockbacks are true then it’s proof of what most of us have said would happen - that our hire/fire attitude to coaches would come back to haunt us. Yes it’s worked for us to a point, and it’s worked for the Pozzo’s over clubs - but that’s because the whole culture to coaches and managers is like that in Spain and Italy. It isn’t here. It was always likely to catch up with us.
