There's rumours (no proof yet) of an explosive belt which would certainly explain the shooting (and the reluctance to leave of the last guy to get off him)

Kudos to those members of the public for their quick thinking to restrain the man and the police acted fast too.

Police now confirming he had a fake explosive device attached to him. And that he's brown bread.

Going above and beyond to restrain him if the suicide vest (dummy or otherwise) is true.

Hoping for good news about the stab victims.

Those members of the public were super brave, well done all.

Absolutely no problem with the police shooting the guy. He has apparently murdered two people and was wearing a suicide vest. Two bullets in the back was too good for him.

We are in the middle of a General Election campaign. A man who was potentially a very serious security risk has been shot dead. According to GoBH (I'm watching Beeb coverage in Moon's without sound) two other stab victims have also died.

Very well done to the 'ave a go' general public and to the 'take no prisoners' polis response when 'needs must'. But wall-to-wall Beeb coverage? C'mon? If we really want to be a nation secure in its own skin then we have to give this stuff less prime-time not more.

Well over 1000 people died in the UK today (and every day). Probably way more than that given 'winter'. Probably closer to 1500. Of those probably in excess of 30 died on the roads (given winter).

A sense of perspective please? Move along down the carriage ...

Credit to the police and certainly the civilians who intervened at huge risk to their own selves.

I do believe that our police in London are among the best in the world at mobilizing quickly and responding to these types of incidents with the necessary force and efficiency to minimize casualties.

Amazing bravery of Those civilians that stepped in ! Will hopefully out off others from doing the same as no doubt reduced the devastation that he could have caused and saved lives .

Shocking (if true) that the knifeman was a former terrorist suspect out on license from prison. Electronically Tagged and attending a conference on criminality in the Fishmnongers Guildhall; where he started the attack.

Questions will now have to be asked about how we as a society treat terrorists at the end of their prison sentences.

With respect Luke, I believe our police are not among the best but the best at responding to these types of incidents! It amazes me the speed at which we respond to major incidents, I always wonder how they pick up the pieces of what they were doing beforehand!

It sickens me that we still live in a society where fear of getting our life stolen by a maniac or a group of terrorists who play God and think they have the right to decide when it's a person's time to die.

What is wrong with us as a race? Why are we so divided by religion and culture or whatever the so called reason is?

People are not perfect, I get that and some of us need help and support. Will there ever be a day when wars end and all this stops?

On a slightly more positive note, well done to the emergency services and the brave souks who interveened. Love and prayers go to those whose lives were thanklessly lost.

The courage shown by the general public is simply astonishing. The Police I believe had no other option once the explosive vest or belt was seen. So it was fake they were not to know in those crucial seconds. They have definitely learnt from 7/7 and following terrorist threats. To the innocent victims and their families there are no words to comfort your pain. But you will be in the thoughts and prayers of the people today. RIP.

In the end it’s because some people are rich and some are poor. The medieval mumbo-jumbo of religion is just the excuse.

First victim named. Anyone is tragic, but this guy Jack seems particularly so, the coordinator of the course, someone trying to make things better. Just not right.

As Home Secretary, she had to "get in on the act" as Yvette Cooper has politicised the tragedy, blaming the Home Office, alongside others that have blamed the tragedy on the reduction in police numbers.

It's a shame that political points are the most important factor for Labour so soon after people were stabbed. The major Parties were meant to have agreed between each other to respectfully not campaign for the day.

Agree with that. I'm struggling to want to vote for any of them. Like asking who's your favorite defender this season.

The parties agreed to cancel some campaign events only.

You should scrub ‘Labour’ from your post and change it to ‘politicians’.

Bearing in mind there’s absolutely no role for a politician to play at an active crime scene in this country, for what other reason than scoring political points did Boris and Priti decide to go on their well-photographed walk about with the two police commissioners yesterday within the cordon?

Boris also managed, in his recorded comments to Sky News on Friday night responding to the news of confirmed fatalities, to shoehorn in the Tories’ pledge to recruit 20,000 more police officers. Beats Cooper at scoring a political point by about 12 hours! And anyway, it was Boris who fired the starting gun on the prison release debate during the same interview, by saying he had “long argued it is a mistake to allow serious and violent criminals to come out of prison early. It is very important that we get out of that habit.” That could easily have been parked for a couple of days.

Maybe, but had they not visited then they would have been criticised for not doing so, just like they were criticised for not visiting a village (was it Fishlake), even though he had visited other flood hit areas several days before.

Boris wasn't criticising Labour in those comments, Cooper directly attacked the Tories, with about eight tweets.

The early release thing isnt the issue, due to austerity the network that helped to rehabilitate these mentally ill people back into society has been cut.
