This is people like Nath's wet dream. A run of failure so he and his ilk can spout off about how much smarter they are than everyone else. It's so much easier than actually achieving anything on your own.

One of your better efforts mate. At least it provided some sort of coherent argument as opposed to a 'spittle flecked rant'. And there's a lot of it to agree with. At least you're consistent though along with the recently returned Rookery Lad and his monosyllabic utterings. wfcmoog and GoingDown present different propositions of course with obviously schizoid tendencies around cynicism, nastiness and negativity as opposed to their alter-egos exhibiting genuinely funny dry humour, coherence and reason. Jumbo exhibits the expectation around 'having a few bob in the bank' while otherwise being 'OK' and Chumlax would appear to resent someone having an opinion and defending it. There, I think I've identified my main protagonists. There may be a few other hangers-on. Anyway, to the substantive points:

    1. There will be absolutely no difference whatsoever between our fan base and any other when it comes to the ratio between those who offer a 'constructive critique' and 'frothers',

    2. No such thing as "insanely delusional happy clappers" exist. Were they to do so then I'd be grateful if you could point me in the direction of anyone on these forums, or in the stadium, or in the club at large who is 'happy' with the current situation. I'd have thought that being 'happy' would be a required constituent of being 'happy clappy' by definition. And,

    3. Similarly, kindly point me in the direction of anyone on here who has claimed that the last few transfer window debacles haven't seriously compromised our PL status. We're all agreed!

If not then who is that person? Identify and out yourself. No takers? how surprising.

    * I have "two brain cells to rub together".

*Of course, if you're relentlessly negative then your time will come around eventually like a stopped clock.

Then what is it, when the season before we were nowhere near it with the same manager and a similar squad of players for most of that season, and when we're now absolutely horrendous with the same squad of players and the manager was sacked because of it? We had a purple patch for the first half of the season, that was all.

This is why some people don’t agree with you because you manipulate facts and state them as truth.

We had a purple patch at the start but that was all,
    • We won the the first four games. 4 games - 12 points. And that was a purple patch where we seemed to score with most chances. Is it these first four games you mean as the purple patch or the whole first half?
    • In fact we then only picked up 1 point from the next four games during our lucky purple patch.
    • We picked up 27 points in the first half of the season, and 23 points in the second half of he season. If 27 points is a purple patch what does that make second? Maybe mauve?
    • If we had replicated our second half of the season in the first half, we would have got 46 points.
    • After the 13 games we have played so far this season, we would be on 16 points if we could replicate the second half of last season
In fact the truth is it is only in your revisionist history that we had a terrible second half.
    • We had a terrible last four games, yes. Picking up 1 point. But four games is not enough to base anything on, or if it presumably the start of the season was not a fluke? Or if the first 4 four games where then maybe the last 4 games are too?
    • Before those last four games, the worst run we had over a longish period was picking up a point a game.
    • In fact the 7 game previous to our last 4 game we picked up 9 points. Not amazing but that included playing Liverpool, Leicester, Man City, Man Utd, and Arsenal.
    • And we won the two games before that.
Just because you rant and rave doesn’t make you correct. We were consistently picking up points until the last four games of the season.

That's all really great, except for the fact that when I said "purple patch" I was referring to last season as a whole and in general...

Again, last season was a "fluke" because it was a complete one off. With a very similar squad we didn't come anyone near those heights the season before, and the season following we are now on course to become one of the worst performing Premier League teams of all time.

Fluke. One off. Random, unexplainable event.

    O
Fair enough I guess if that's your view (although you did literally say the first half of the season).

One question is when is a purple patch not a purple patch? Javi managed us for 66 games, so that was purple patch of some 62 games, or a few less if you knock off the tail end of last season. I'm sure if we put our minds to it we could find explanations for the miraculous event that was us staying up last season if we all put our minds to it.

Simple really. Because Knight GT is a genuine supporter of our football club as opposed to being 'annoyed from Kent' attempting to rival 'annoyed from Tunbridge Wells'. So I'll challenge you lot again.

Can you point me in the direction of anyone on here who is 'happy' with our current situation? Should you be unable to do so then I'd suggest your 'happy-clapper' mantra is a figment of your own (small team, easily identifiable individually) mantra and not worth the paper.

Your defeat your own logic. Your answer to the question “why do you stick the boot into other critical supporters?” is “simple -because he is a genuine supporter”.

So your view is anyone critical is worthy of getting the boot into them? So genuine supporters would not be critical? Dare I say it they are thus........happy? Or are you just thrashing around as usual?

I'd go as far as saying that the critical fans are more genuine than the happy clappers are.

After all, it appears there is no situation that would get them angry about things. The club could be merged with Luton and they'd claim that it was good because it meant Luton didn't exist anymore.

They are the captain of the Titanic believing it can't sink. The critical ones are Leo DiCaprio banging Kate Winslet in the steamy car.

So last season was a fluke . How do you know that this season isn’t a fluke then?( or whatever the word for a bad fluke is) I would suggest that any club similar to Watford that played three or four seasons with a similar squad ( but equally different injury issues/different managers /different formations ) would probably finish all in different positions so how exactly do you determine which is a fluke ? Is it just because that was the season we finished highest ?

  24. wfcmoog

    I'll weigh in here.

We did well last season, but nobody would have argued that our defence was up to muster. It was weak. Some of you happy clappers might think it less weak, but it was weak.

Similarly our attack could never have been described as clinical. Any combination of Gray (useless), Deeney (fat and useless) and Deolefeu (misses 4/5 chances) is limited.

We had some players doing better than now, but overall, what we are seeing now is the natural outcome of having a squad without a single dependable goalscorer, or a single decent defender.
    The midfield isn't perfect either.

Because in every season since we've come up we've finished lower than last season and not made a cup final. Last season is the exception that stands out more than any other.

This season we look exactly what we are - an old, tired squad of players who don't have the skill, youth and/or will to get us out of the mess.

As said before, at some point your luck runs out. There's only so long you can get away with minimal investment and upgrades in an ageing, already average at best backline, and a sub-standard, ageing (again) frontline, before it catches up with you and bites you on the arse.

From memory , we’ve finished 14th,13th,17th and 11th, so last season was not a massive outlier exactly .

might course we know we don’t have a gear defence or prices striker but I think this season we look like a group Of players largely out of form and lacking confidence . None of this explains why last season was a fluke . It was not really a massive exception , just what I would expect from a club of our size whose fortunes and performances will change over different seasons .

Ha! Not at all. Nobody is 'happy'. Least of all me. But I'm not angry either. It's the anger I don't get. If you support a small town team like ours then if you get angry around a poor season in a league above our station then that does indeed smack of 'entitlement'.

Gino Pozzo has f.cked up by overly concentrating on his business model as opposed to delivering some basic footballing necessities for the first team. And those suggesting 'chickens coming home to roost' are entirely correct. But that doesn't make me angry. Simply sad. Because maybe I thought that he might have genuinely 'sussed it' long term. I was probably wrong. But your lot seem to think he somehow should have done and are angry that he apparently hasn't.

Our club will always be a roller-coaster ride. Same with Burnley who've been down and up again during the Pozzo era. Same with all the other smaller clubs in the PL. At some point they'll all mess up.

If you want to pay your money to watch something that you're entitled to expect a pre-determined outcome from then I'd suggest going to watch a film or buying a theatre ticket.

Eh? I’ve paid to watch many films and performances that are absolutely rancid as well. Watford don’t have a monopoly on being massive disappointments.

At least when I’m critical of a film I don’t have someone tediously claiming how “entitled” I am. Pozzo has messed up massively over 3 or 4 transfer windows. That deserves heavy criticism. If he learns from his mistakes then he’ll get praise. Sacking Flores and Giraldi would be a good start.

Nothing would make you happy really. You will always complain about something unless we were in Liverpool's position. Its just the way you are. If you were a Leicester fan you'd likely complain for not investing enough to be top of the league. If you were a Chelsea fan you'd likely complain about being banned from buying players. If you were a Man City fan you'd likely complain how rubbish at the back they've been this season. And so on.

  32. I agree about everyone getting angry. Don't see the point unless you just generally enjoy being angry at things.

We have been doing really well and unless we spend as much and as well as Liverpool, man city or Leicester (who've really spent well and within their means) then we'll always be one of the many other clubs on the brink or relegation in any given season. Just have to accept that. No rich billionaire with bottomless pockets is ever really going to be interested in Watford I'd imagine.

In this scenario, the best thing we can hope for is that we're run and set up well enough to firstly survive any falls and then secondly with strength to challenge for a swift return.

In that respect we're in a great place from where we were a few years ago so you can't really be angry at the owners.

Not correct in season 2017/18 , when we finished 14th compared to 2016/17 when we finished 17th. I think the better measure is the number of league goals we scored in each season - 40 (Ighaloo and Deeney 17) - 40 - 44 - 52. Its the goals drying up that will kill us, not the leaky defence. In essence the big recruits to improve the goals scored have not been a great improvement Gray; Welbeck and Sarr. Deeney has been top or joint top (I know skewed as he takes the penalties) in three out of four seasons.

  34. WillisWasTheWorst

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

I think he meant last season was our highest finish since promotion.

On the 'big recruits': Gray was an underwhelming and overly expensive signing to me at the time and nothing he has done since has made me change my mind. Signing Welbeck should be considered a coup for a club like us, but of course was a gamble because of his fitness record. Him getting injured again so soon could even be what does for us in the end. Similar to Deulofeu, Sarr is not a striker but I think could improve our goal threat if played on the wing in a suitable formation. We haven't seen this yet. What is missing is a real goal scorer which, although he is a good centre-forward, Deeney has never been despite his reasonable scoring record in the Championship.

Really? There are several clubs who don't seem to be 'on the brink of relegation'. Bournemouth (admittedly with some well off owners), Palace and Burnley, to name three. I would add West Ham, but they look dodgy at present (but will probably pull away from trouble, as Palace did). Wolves and Brighton may turn out to be similar in due course, probably too early to tell yet. Is it that fantastical to aspire to regular safe mid-table status without spending astronomical sums?
