Did anyone see that Eliud Kipchoge has run a marathon in 1 hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds become the first person ever to do it in under 2 hours.
Brilliant performance and afterwards he ran up and down to celebrate with the crowd. Amazing.
Does not count as an official word record as he had "pacers" etc but still makes the Guinness world record.

And he looked pretty fresh after it too !

I was a bit of an athlete when I was at school - not even County standard but I was slim and enjoyed running. I never ran a marathon though much to my regret. My weight, age, joints etc mean I am unlikely ever to run one now. If I did my aim would be just to finish.

When there have been world record attempts on the track at shorter distances (5,000 metres etc.) with pacemakers used, did they also not count as official world records? If they did, what’s the difference?

I think the absence of competitors and the fact that he had runners in front and a car giving a laser guide for his speed and both formed windbreaks all contributed to the fact it could not count. I am no expert though - this is just what I heard while watching it.

It seemed to be such an artificial scenario, that it left me less than wholly impressed.

Is it equivalent to Ben Johnson using drugs to beat the 100m world record?

Yes - it was artificial. However with someone blowing a force 9 gale behind me and downhill all the way and any other help given would not get me 26 miles in less than about 12 hours :)

Kipchoge had about 9 pacemakers running in a V shape to shield him from wind and run in the big slipstream thus produced to drastically reduce air resistance.
Like the last Canadian goose at the end of the V flying formation. The poor goose at the front does all the work.
And he had a laser pointing exactly where to put his feet.

F me, if I had all that help and assistance I could run around a running track at least twice.

And a pub quiz answer to help everyone:

    Q. Geese always fly in a V formation, but why is one side of the V almost always longer than the other side?

    A. Because there are more geese on that side.

    You’re welcome :p

Not an official competitive race so not a new competitive record

    A guiness world record though.
Until I plan to beat it next week running in a specially built vacuum wearing a space suit and 2 turbo blasters.

Roger Bannister had help to do the four minute mile.

Heard some woman on 5 live earlier say that he was using special running shoes that arent allowed in official competition, something about kinetic energy, no idea how that would help over 26 miles, I'm no kinetic energy guru, do you own research ffs.

I think they filmed the video in Covent Garden and the Capital presenter Nicky Horne's son,Bernard, played violin in it.

2 inches of Bouncy Memory foam and a big, go faster Nike swoosh - like running on a trampoline - simples.
Only £350 ? a pair and you too can run 13 miles an hour for 2 hours.
