So we've had a marathon started at midnight in which a third of the competitors failed to finish, a Rugby World Cup played in the typhoon season at which some of the matches will fail to start, and we still have the football World Cup in Qatar to look forward to.

Wrong-headed people like Clive no doubt think this is all to do with money, but Lord Coe, who knows about these things, says it's about taking top-level sport to those poor benighted people who don't have a chance to watch it, except on telly.

Inspired by his words, I've decided to organise the World Camel-Racing Championships, to be held in Bury. If it's a success, I'll start lobbying for an India v Pakistan Test series to be played in Siberia.

  3. I was going to suggest a World Surfing Championship event in the north of Scotland - but, oddly enough, that has already happened.

I would suggest a world tiddly winks competition but suspect most people would be too shy to enter it.

Thurso, I think. Big waves - big, cold waves.

  6. Scary too. I remember a family holiday to Orkney in the late 60s when we had to stay in Thurso for a couple of days - the ferry from Scrabster was cancelled due to bad weather. I got seasick just from looking at the huge waves.
