    Yeah I will start it.

    Awful start to the season.
You can argue all you want about playing better in parts of the last two games - the fact is 3 losses, 2 against not great opponents, can’t defend, have scored 1 goal and conceded ? I’ve lost count 7?

Awful defence, and players don’t care

In all seriousness we need to get something from Newcastle. If we don’t we probably won’t get a point until at least October. If we don’t get something from Newcastle I’d seriously consider us more likely to be relegated than not.

I have to agree. We are doomed. Dawson is rubbish and the defence looks as slow as a snail in terms of reaction. I want to be proven wrong, but I doubt it.

As forum hippy you should be ashamed of this suggestion. Should the bovine obscenity get anywhere near our football club I will personally and ceremoniously burn my season ticket at the doors of the ticket office having invited a film crew along to witness said event.

But it won't happen of course. Hiring past-their-sell-by-date, stinking old pachyderms isn't the Pozzo way at all.

Could you burn it? I figure without any sort of accelerant the plastic card would just smoulder and then melt.

Oh, I'll bring a couple of jerry-cans of accelerant. The film crew can provide their own.

So who do we reckon of the current squad will stay for the Championship next season?

Also, where will we get replacement players from? Udinese reserves again? Or will all the youth players we’ve signed be given a chance? That actually might make next season quite interesting.

Easy - anyone who doesn't truly give a damn can leave or be sold at rock bottom prices to get their @rses out the door quicker than they came in (cough)Doucoure'(cough), and whoever is left plus a few new additions will light the Championship on fire and we will be back in a year with a new look, younger and hungry squad to challenge Citee and Liverpool for the title. It will be absolutely glorious.

I have to say that this idea that players do not give a damn. Often repeated among fans of clubs who are doing badly, is far more nuanced. In performance teams confidence in leadership is the key factor. Liking a manager is not the same as having belief that they can lead you to success. Leadership is complex. So I expect players who leave would do so because the club makes a judgement based on their value and costs, as much as their attitude.

The desire to be led in the championship to win is more important. Look at Newcastle. The players wanted and believed in Benitez. They often put in gash performances, but they all believed in him.

So for me it is getting the right leadership and coaching team in place.

Yesterday was the day that really brought home the fact that we aren’t good enough to stay in this league. Second best to SU and happy with a point. Can’t wait for this season to be over. Fed up of not wanting to watch Match of the Day as it’s either the top 4 pummelling someone, or our relegation rivals picking up valuable shock points to pull further away from us. Good wins for Brighton, Burnley, CP and AV yesterday while SU picked up a useful away point.

Next season will be carnage. How many of our starting 11 today will want to stay? How many contracts will we have to buy out, what will be the fire sale prices of Doucs, GD, Sarr etc after a poor relegation season ? How many of our youngsters who joined to play in the prem will want to stay now that they have a chance to play ? Quina ? Pedro? No chance. Do we fancy getting promotion with TD, Gray, Hughes, Wilmott, Bachman starting every week ? Given our recent track record of signing talent, what will our transitional starting 11 look like while players come and go as we reacclimatise to the championship ?

Hopefully the 21/22 season will be better.

Agree. This a problem with the Pozzo model. Duxbury openly states that managers are dispensable and do not impact the longer term model. Players are bound to have less respect and have less fear of repercussions of poor spells of performance as there will be a new gaffer in. I’m sure this has contributed negatively to historical poor end of seasons. Part of me things we should have persevered with Mazarri and allowed him to ship out underperformers that summer. Gracia was just a yes man who was always happy to work with what he was given but I think Mazarri would have had strong views that summer.

Can't say I'm that surprised to see a thread like this emerge 8 games into 38 game season!

Get the impression some on here are so committed to going down they don't even want a turn around?

Would love to turn it around but think this is actually quite an interesting question for next season if we go down.

It’ll be the first time we’ve been relegated from the top tier after a sustained spell in it since the 80’s. It’ll be the first time the Pozzo’s have to deal with this, if they stay, which interests me considering the model they have in place.

Personally I think we should look to some of those youngsters we’ve signed. However, if we do go down, I think at this point all things considered I’d be happy just to stabilise in the Championship. I think next season down there would be very tough too and we will struggle near the bottom.

Doubt Gino would sell up. It would be the worst possible time to do so.

Alot depends on work permits, which I imagine, depends on... Brexit. All going well I think we would have a very decent team at Championship level. We'd lose Deulofeu, Pererya, Doucoure and Capoue. If we can get Cucho and persuade Pedro to stick around, I think it could be very decent.

We were not second best to Sheff Utd. Not once did they come close to scoring. We let them have the ball in the middle third.
Doucoure will leave. I actually felt sorry for him. He was definitely trying and definitely cared but could not understand why he kept giving it away. Delefeou will leave. Not sure about the rest though

We're not a club that brings through youth any more. We brought in Quique who actively stifles talent and creativity and sidelines anyone under the age of 28.

Burnley got out of their hole last season by throwing McNeil into the situation. We're throwing missing-man Pr*dl into it.

We won't see any of these kids play for us and they'll all leave. Hell, I would if I was one of the youngsters, especially Bachmann and Quina who deserve at least a chance.

    Sheff Utd. At home.

This illustrates how much of a mess we are in. We have Spurs and Chelsea in the next 3 games and Bournemouth's movement up front will rip us to pieces. We are in serious trouble and I would say we have very little hope.

We let them have it in the middle third because when we had it in the middle third at Wolves we failed. Of course we won the possession stats. there but so what? Quique made this point during the week. So, yesterday, we played like Wolves played against us last week.

Everyone on here has been crying out to 'get the defence sorted' (Quique's forte), so yesterday, to address exactly that, he played three CBs. Which to me looked like it 'got the defence sorted' given that we kept a clean sheet for the first time in God knows how long and denied them any reasonable goal-scoring opportunity.

Of course if you play three CBs then you have to sacrifice a position somewhere else. But we still created three 'gilt-edged' goal-scoring opportunities to their none. As in 'he should have scored there' ones.

So we should have won the match but didn't because not one of those opportunities was taken and I'm not sure there's a whole lot Quique can do about that.

Wilder's post-match interview (as seen on MotD) was utter b.llocks.

We are somewhere between 1/4 and 1/5 of the way through the season and we've not yet won a game and yesterday didn't even feel confident enough to seriously have a go at beating SU at home. We aren't in a relegation fight yet. We actually need to win a couple of games before we can catch up and get into a relegation fight. Take your blinkers off.

Respect your view, almost stating the obvious, but I personally think there will be a reaction in the squad soon & we will see what's needed. There is time.

People wallowing in grief this early says everything.

Our chances were as a result of Sheff Utd clangers. If they had played to their normal standard it's quite possible we would have ended the game without a chance to speak of. A clean sheet is certainly a positive, but the lack of intent in this game was shocking. We could easily be outplayed and lose the next 3 and where will that leave us? We have to show intent in the winnable home games or we'll be cut adrift before you know it.

There is indeed time. A couple of wins gets us right back in the mix. However, Spurs and Chelsea in the next 3 games. We rarely beat Bournemouth either so we could be 8 or 9 points adrift of 17th by the time we go to Norwich.

I think it's odd that you are seemingly not concerned at all and decide to call anyone who is a "melt".

    Dawson's wasn't.

Also, plenty of the goals scored against us lately have been because of clangers by our own players, and it's not uncommonly the case that games are decided by whichever team makes the fewest mistakes.

Dawson was unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard box from a free kick! Yes true enough we have made many clangers of our own though. My point is aside from those 3 self inflicted moments we didn't look dangerous at all (in comparison for example to the West Ham/Arsenal games).

Well it would be nice if they decide at some point to have “a reaction”. When do you think that might be. Next week ? 4 or 5 games from now ? I wonder why they haven’t decided to have a reaction yet. People refusing to acknowledge our form and the situation we are in says everything.

So you don't give us any credit at all for having 'created' those three chances? Why wasn't the Dawson chance a 'well-worked free kick'?

Anyway, even if there was an element of 'poor defending' on their part the comparison is that there wasn't any on our part. Which was a marked improvement.

It's not an 'absolutist' game. There will always be errors. And then the trick is to take advantage of them. Which we almost did but not quite.
