A rather small but precious aquatic habitat near Welwyn. Like many small raptors the Kestrel has suffered a breeding decline in Hertfordshire as suitable habitat in terms of nest sites and that of it's prey has declined or fragmented. Beautiful little falcons.

    Love Kestrels.
Just watched a Sparrowhawk dive into our hedge to take a sparrow - they usually swoop past but this one actually followed the sparrow into it

Tame or homing pigeons or feral pigeons/doves are all one and the same thing. They are all derived from the wild Rock Dove which is now confined to the remotest bits of our western seaboard.

Many feral birds still look very much like wild Rock Doves with a generally grey plumage with a couple of black wing-bars and a white rump. Others come in a liquorice allsorts variety of colours. Including pure white. But if you saw seven+ pure white birds together then they will undoubtedly have been bred with that specific purpose in mind. Whiteness. Maybe for other traits too. The commonest variety of pure white domestic pigeon/dove is the Fantail Pigeon. Again, there may be others. Not my field. Think a pure bred dog v mongrels here.

These birds would only be of interest to an ornithologist in the context of breeding experiments. They were, most certainly, not wild birds.

I trust we can now communicate civilly on this thread at least.

Took some nice photos of one just sitting on our lawn this morning. Assumed it was a juvenile waiting for a parent to bring it food. Then realised it was actually standing on something it had killed and was eating......and that the grass was clearly in need of a cut !.

An excellent site. Do you go there? If not, you can get the key to the gate from the lady in the house next door. Particularly good for Green Sandpipers.

Was down in Watford last week visiting family and friends and stayed at my parents house.

Right opposite their house in Hillrise Avenue there were about 15 to 20 (a pandemonium, I believe) green and yellow parakeets nesting in the trees.

Not something I expected to see !

Becoming a pest issue. I remember seeing my first Richmond way about 20 years ago and their population is steadily growing and spreading north. Fairly usual occurrence in Meister Manor. Noisier than Pigeons but less messy and disease ridden so on balance I'll allow it.

The issue is whether they will out-compete endemic species like taking over woodpecker holes etc.

Can anyone tell me how to paste a photo I have taken here? "Image" is asking for a URL whatever that is. Is that the route or do I need to use the "insert" - if so - how?

If it's on your PC not on the www then best to use the file attach option.

Click on the more options button bottom right under the text box where you enter your thread post.

Then use the upload a file option.

p.s. - if I am right some of our US contributors may have a clue - especially if they are from West Virginia.

Download an app called plantsnap and take a picture in that. It should identify it for you.
