The Second Coming Of Quique Sanchez Flores

He's still comfortably the best looking and best dressed man ever to step foot into Watford (the town, not just the club).

Have a look at yourself right now. Can you honestly say you're in a position to criticise? Let me guess, bald, beer belly and BO?

Your wife may let you prod away at her once a month, but she's thinking of Quique I assure you.

Thank you for reminding me why getting a season ticket has turned out to be a good decision. The view from the Rookery will now remain a good one, regardless of what turgid crap may be (not literally) unfolding on the pitch.

I seem to remember he somewhat overdid the blue coat, scarf and trainer combo in his last season with us though. I’d like to see him with a fresh hair cut, beard trim and a suit for our first game.. it won’t happen though.

This is an excellent interview. Can't help but warm to the guy. I think these two coaches Javi and Quique are the best personalities we've had since promotion.

I really hope he succeeds this time and that it doesn't go south like last time.

But a large part of his unparalleled style was specifically down to the fact that he didn't do anything as passé as to merely throw on a suit. It was more than that; so much more.

An unstructured double-breasted blazer here, a v-necked pullover on top of a collared shirt with just the right amount of sprezzatura there, or even just a monochrome t-shirt, pulled off by virtue of a robust physique worthy of a man half his age.

What we want are new and fabulous ensembles with the perfect Quique blend of preppy elegance and louche insouciance. I'm sure he won't disappoint.

The last time Quique sent something down South was Iturbe and it cost Bournemouth 90k a week .

I think the concern was that more time was spent on considering the options for the morning's optimal clothing combination than the weekend's optimal player combination.

Anyone who cares more about the configuration of whoppers on the pitch than Quique's sartorial choices needs their frontal lobe zapping with 1000 volts.

I wonder how much instead they've spent on wages for all the sub standard defenders we've had (net - as obviously Ake would be on a wage), the lost league positions we have had due to our weak defence and the 8m payoff for a manager who was sacked for being unable to make a silk purse out of our pig **** players.

Penny smart/pound stupid with our owner.

Yes. We should have signed Ake if we were given the opportunity.

But let’s not kid ourselves that we wouldn’t have tried to turn him into a winger, left him on the bench for 3 months while he ‘gets up to speed’ then sold him for less than we paid for him - and all the while kept Mariappa in the team at CB.

Ake is a great CB. But we wouldn’t have played him there. No chance.

Which is exactly what's been wrong with our transfer policy over every window since Ake left. A blunt refusal to shell out big bucks for a defender.

We had gold dust in our hands. We blew it.

The Goals Against stats do not show that Ake would have improved our defence. Under QSF we conceeded 50 goals, Bmuff 67. Under Mazzarri we conceeded 68 and Bmuff 67. Silva/Javi it was 64 conceded , Bmuff let in 61. Last year it was 59 with BMuff at their worst and Ake helping them let in 70. So our average over four seasons is 60 and the range 50 - 68. Bmuff have averaged 66 goals conceded with a range of 61 - 70.

I suspect QSF is likely to address the defence by improving the whole team approach to defence. This could be bad news for some players and for others their chances of being involved more will improve.

Apparently we have installed a new tactic from Arsenal going forward. We no longer have a defence. We have a line of those
wobbly things you hit that get straight back up and don't fall over. They are lined across the goal line post to post. Foster
gets to stand behind the goal screaming instructions at them.

I understand what these stats could be argued to imply about Ake, but I think it’s hard to make any argument, whichever stats you might quote, that he wouldn’t be a massive upgrade on all of the defenders we’ve had since he was here.

The simple eye-test, plus the fact he’s now an international defender and has been linked to clubs like City would suggest he’s regarded as a very good defender.

The stats are also somewhat clouded by the fact that Bournemouth as well known to have adopted a style of play that is pretty open, certainly in comparison to the style we’ve generally employed.

I think that is a fair point, and i agree it is the way the whole team are set up that has the most impact. One single player may or may not improve your defence. It is said that Liverpool improved their defence buying a centre half - but they also bought new full backs and (IMHO) most significantly a new goal keeper. I suspect Gino thinks that the money spent on changing the first team coaching team is more likely to improve our goals against than buying new players.

Ake is far and away Muff's best defender. He was also their player of the season in 17/18. The rest of their backline probably wouldn't even get in to our team that's how rough it is - Adam Smith, Charlie Daniels, Chris Mepham, Steve Cook, etc. etc. Also not forgetting their oft calamitous goalkeepers in Boruc and Begovic. Often when watching them play Ake has been practically a one man defence for them. He'd certainly be our best defender were he here again.

Defending is a whole-team responsibility. That doesn't mean everybody spends all their time in their own penalty area, but it does mean that everybody knows what they are supposed to do, and how, and then bust a gut trying to do it when defending is necessary. If Quique is to be successful this season that is what he has got to get the players to do. I wonder if one or two of our players won't shape up and will soon start spending less time in the first team.
Mind you, having better back line players certainly would help and Ake is one of those.

  29. AndrewH63

I agree it's about the whole team, but again looking at his personal stats, Ake has a 63% tackle success rate, Holebas 64% and Cathcart 71%. Ake made fewer mistakes that resulted in goals. Charlie Daniels has a tackle success score of 74%.

That’s why I always found it nonsense that people tried to compare Van-Dijk with Maguire.

Van-Dijk very rarely spends time tackling and sliding all over the place, whereas it’s a key part of Maguire’s game.

I could be way off - but I’ve just got a hunch that Pereyra might spend more time on the bench than in the starting XI. Which may hasten a departure in January or next summer.

What you seem to have forgotten is that most football fans are grotesquely obese and have never played an actual 11 v 11 match in their entire lives. These same foul things then only ever watch matches through the fog of 4 or 5 pints of strong lager.

They are then handed their opinions by sports journalists, who themselves are grotesquely obese and have never played an actual 11 v 11 match in their entire lives. These same foul things then only ever watch matches through the fog of 4 or 5 pints of strong lager.
