The full mourning for Federer continues by some lady members of Hoddesdon.
One or two seem to have taken it to Rudolph Valentino proportions!
One,a top lawyer, has resulted to mocking Djokovic as his wife wasn't at the match.
Very odd and these women laugh at football fans!

Heap big trouble brewing in the leafy confines of Hertfordshire tennis.
Yesterday we were due to play Letchworth in the Herts Summer League.
The fixture was arranged late February, was the last and most difficult to arrange for our captain and Letchworth insisted upon this date.
On July 9 our captain received a very long text from her opposite number saying "we will have to postpone as we have Team Tennis play off that day."
Our captain said "No" citing that Letchworth have 35 ladies listed for their three teams and we have 13 for our two. She added that we had to play with weakened teams against Radlett and Gosling. She wrote to the league organiser, also LTA council member for Herts.
It transpires that the dates for the Team Tennis went live on February 2,two weeks before the Herts fixture meeting. A similar situation arose in Oxforshire and the club were told to get on with it.
The league has to be concluded by the end of September, there are no free slots for us or our team,we have other competitions, county and national fixtures. Radlett asked St Albans for a postponement and they declined. Radlett got on with it. West Herts had to select a 75 year old as they were short of players but they fulfilled their fixture.
To add a little flavour in March we were due to play Letchworth in a mixed match. Barrie, our captain had a ruptured spleen and was in hospital. He forgot about the match and we only had me available. He asked for a postponement. They claimed the match as they did the previous year against our second team, who didn't want to travel due to heavy snow!
The league organiser has rejected our claiming of the fixture however rule 6.4 of the rules and regulations say that unless bad weather prevents a match taking place,a team that cannot field a team will forfeit the match.
Our captain is composing her reply.
Two other clubs that have also suffered from Letchworth's overbearing and aggressive behaviour have told us not to back down.
    This could turn ugly!

Splendid gossip from County Cup at Devonshire Park,Eastbourne.
Lewis Burton, male model and Kent player has been named in The Sun as the new 'love interest'*of the lady who presents 'Love Ireland' or something similar.
Lewis was formerly with the daughter of Mark Goldberg the Welling FC and former Palarse owner.
He was seen on his phone for most of yesterday, when he wasn't on court!
In the tennis Kent won the title as did Herts ladies.
*My words in a red top style!

Kyrgios v Medvedev in Washington final. Kyrgios saves a match point to defeat Tsitsipas 7/6 in the third.
Herts v Middlesex for the over 35 title at Devonshire Park. Division in the IBB camp. Mr IBB wants Middlesex to win as 'Herts Mafia' can be overbearing. I am now playing again for Herts.
    Come on Middlesex!

Murray looks like he might lose in 2 tight sets .

Struggled on his serve a bit - probably lacking the power and accuracy which will come with time.

Played some decent shots though and got more competitive as the match went on .

Any news on this situation which risks a civil, or even uncivil, war in the world of club tennis ?

The league organiser,a WFC fan I might add, has asked us again to find another date.
We have none to offer due to other fixtures, not withstanding the downright cheek of Wretchworth trying to cover up for their mess.
We know that all the other clubs support our stance.
He replied to our captain's second email on Sunday morning with a pathetic load of 'woe is me,blah, blah, blah, doing my best, blah, blah blah, only a volunteer, blah, blah, blah, values of Hertfordshire integrity, blah, sportsmanship blah...' continued page 94.
I could not contain my wrath any longer and having been awoken at 4.30am by Arthur, composed a response. I closed it by saying I now understood why the league was broken He then became even more hurt and indignant and said if no resolution could be found it would need to go to arbitration! In addition he was desperately keen to know who else agreed with us. I replied it would be much quicker to say who didn't!
It has really polluted the summer and strengthened my resolve not to play in this antiquated format. Whether the club continue is up to the players to decide, but I know that many other clubs will withdraw teams as it is too long a format and has no hint of fairness or governance. Already this season there have been eight walkovers given. Adapt or die.
    Utterly dismal.

Liked for the Lewis Carroll gag!
His manager,'Onion Head' Clinton Coleman, usually of Totteridge TC,actively encourages him to overact.
Huge talent and, like JP Mac,quite often correct in his outbursts.
Massive waste, what with his lack of dedication however.

Medvedev,he of the unkempt hair and the rather one dimensional game is the man of the moment.
He plays Goffin in the Cinci final, having beaten Djokovic in three last night.
The buffoon of a league organiser has replied as to why Letchworth needed to postpone our July fixture.
Apparently six of their players were doing other things.
    So that's ok then,
Can't be bothered to play so rearrange the match.
Couldn't run a bath, says a lot of LTA council that he's on it.
Let's hope Sandy Procter can shake them up in three years time when she becomes president.

Medvedev beats Goffin for his first Masters Series title.
Certainly the form player in the US hard court season.
    Drama at the club yesterday.
We were playing Radlett in a Hot Rackets match and our men's IIs were playing West Herts.
Who arrives for WH but the league organiser with whom we are having words!
We finish our game in quick time and are having tea and a chat with the opposition when we notice all twelve of the men are convened around the net of one court.
It transpires that one of our players, who has form in this regard, has said to the league organiser's son "why are you such a ****?" on numerous occasions. The lad,who according to my friend at W Herts,is a typical 18 year old pushed into tennis,a bit sour but essentially ok,reacts. Our player then goes to slap him on the face, the lad then falls to the ground in a Mr Tumble style!
Our player had been watching the football the night before* and had got quite drunk. However he is a wind up merchant and is always trying to bring the worst of the terraces onto court with him.
It all died down, our remaining players, three of whom were under 20, were dumbstruck and the match was abandoned, although the 11 had tea together quite happily.
Our man went off saying he would never set foot on a court again.
    It's not dull in tennis!

    Brookman's Park v Hoddesdon,Hot Rackets Herts League August 24,1pm.

Saturday sees Hoddesdon's penultimate match in this league.

The Hot Rackets format was introduced ten years or so ago as an alternative to the traditional three pair format ( see higher on the page). It is a two pair competition and players play two full sets and, if one set all, aChampionship Tiebreak or "Champ Tee as Mr IBB calls them!

If the match is tied at two rubbers all a 'shoot out' occurs. This comprises one pair made from one player from each pair. They then play a first to six games set against the opposition. No advantage set so sudden death game and, if I recall correctly, sudden death deuce, returner's choice.

Brookman's Park sit mid to low table, a kind of geriatric Palace if you like.Their club is the poor relation to the rather grand golf club in a very wealthy village/hamlet near Potters Bar. I can't remember the names of most of their players apart from Penny Alexander who isn't too bad but certainly not Great! I always want to ask how Rod is but I don't think it's the same woman?

Hoddesdon sit proudly in second place, played five won five. Twenty rubbers to zero. Harpenden sit top but have completed all their fixtures and have lost two matches, including a four- zero drubbing in our first match of the HR season. This means that they have 17 points and 20 rubbers. We have 15 points and 20 rubbers. Given the rather odd scoring system of '3 points for a win,1 for a loss, zero for a walkover' we are assured 17 points and a tie with Harpenden. Therefore we need one rubber from the four against BP and the four against Berkhampstead to gain promotion to the top league. We would have achieved this last year I'm pretty certain, had we switched our focus to this format earlier, rather than the antiquated three pair competition.

Hoddesdon team: Given the security that we have Yvonne ,or 'OGF' and I have decided to select a 'League Cup' side and rest the 'Holy Trinity' of 'Baa','Woodie' and Sush. These three are Middlesex stalwarts and recently, together with Millie and Franny won the National Over 35s competition. ( See above somewhere!) Baa and Woodie won a round or two at Wimbledon a couple of times and given that in tandem they dropped two games v Radlett and 'Henery' and I another five,we thought we'd give the second string a run out. So in comes Alison Widdicombe to partner OGF. Alison is famed for three things; her husband Paul is a Hornet, her matches go on longer than The Ring and her nephew is Oliver Skipp of THFC. I shall partner 'Hippos' that is Georgina Graham a student at UEA,whose mum Kath does a mean fruit platter!

As a footnote EB I would contractually recommend a Babolat racket but always try before you buy. Most decent terns shops will have demo rackets that you can, usually for a small fee (£10) use to get a feel for the bat. The money is then redeemable when you buy a racket. Other brands are available but the 'Aero' range has the huge advantage of cosmetics in yellow and balck!

    He most certainly does.
Look at the favouritism shown to Federer at the Aussie Open. He has rarely played in the heat of the day. How many times are Nadal and Djokovic penalised for slow play whilst others are docked points?
Evans plays Federer next and Konta through to third round to play Zhang Shuai.

Evans crushed but Konta wins to play Pliskova the Better.
Hoddesdon defeated Brookman's Park 4-0 to secure the league with a game to spare.
On Thursday we advanced to the semis of the newly formed,or possibly re formed 'Harris Cup'. John Harris was on the Herts committee for yonks and this two pair knockout cup is named in his memory. It did exist years ago and I seem to remember winning it with Gosling when Sam Smith played with one of my promising juniors and I played second pair with a lettuce.
David Lloyd Enfield were our opponents with yet another surly brat in tow. Jane, who is the sweetest natured person you can ever wish to meet, called her "a long streak of misery." These youngsters clearly don't enjoy playing tennis and it explains why we lose so many players from the game.
Sunday sees my friends travel to Huddersfield to play Yorkshire in the 40s county and I play at Legends for Herts v Sorry, err Surrey.
If we win we will most probably make the final at Dudley, home of the Duncan Edwards statue. The Duncan Edwards statue is almost certainly more interesting than any of the Surrey team. I don't like Surrey,we used to have real aggro with them when I played for Middlesex at Devonshire Park. They are quite an entitled bunch.

Certainly Medvedev is the form player in the last two months. I don't enjoy his game, very one dimensional but he has the confidence of his climb up the rankings. He will need to serve at close to 70% first serves I would imagine and Rafa will get a lot of work on his ground shots from the court. Medvedev will have to climb all over them otherwise they will spit at him like Medusa's hair.
Andrescu becomes another different winner in the women's game and keeps Pastor Court happy,if that's possible?!
Murray wins the mixed with Bethany Mattek Sands,a brilliant doubles and mixed player, old school serve and volleyer.
