Now Mario Suarez was just never going to make it in England, but does anyone ever ponder about what Jurado could have done if he played in his proper role?

Not saying we should sign him now, nor Ighalo!

It is pretty rare that you see a sacked manager return to a club for a second spell in the premier league (I know Chelsea did it with Mourinho). In Italy and Spain it happens a lot sometimes it’s a 3rd or 4th spell at a club for a manager or head coach ... managers / head coaches at Watford are appointed to achieve a specific objective, QSF objective is the same now as it was the first time, to keep Watford in the prem .... I would not be surprised if he is sacked / leaves in the summer whether a) he keeps us up ... it’s job done, Gino and Scott say thanks very much. In my humble opinion, I dont think they see QSF as being the man to take us on and progress us to be a “best of the rest side” in the prem. and a new man will be brought in to achieve the “best of the rest” objective from the foundations laid by QSF..... Of course there is scenario b) we are relegated, QSF has failed. I don’t think the board would see him as the man with the right tactics and skills to get us promoted again, QSF will be sacked and we would be looking for someone else to achieve the promotion objective .
Watford clearly appoint managers to do a specific job of progression, when achieved they are replaced by a better fit for the next progressive objective. Jokanovic is appointed to get us promoted .... but was seen to be too gung ho, a poor defensive tactician and therefore not suitable to keep us in the prem ... enter QSF (first spell). QSF was identified as the man to keep Watford in prem for the first season. Job done... but he was not the man seen to progress us into an attractive top 10 side and establish us in the prem ... enter Mazzarri with a 3yr deal to move us onwards .... we merely stayed up and progress regressed despite improving the quality of the squad. Mazzarri is sacked and we replace him with Silva on a 2yr deal who was now seen as the bloke to make us a top 10 team ... Everton ****ed that for us ... so in comes Gracia to keep us up and push us into the top 10... first full season we finish 11th with a record points haul, (although it should of been even better save for a truly crap run in the league at the end) An unexpected bonus sees JG lead us to the FA cup final ... this sees him keep his job, despite falling short in his primary top 10 league objective. But with the Cup run considered, perhaps the dip in form is excusable and it’s not the start of regressive performance ..... However the new season arrives and we look pretty appalling, disorganised and disjointed...... JGs side was in a nose dive and he is sacked.... we are now in trouble ..... so now we need to re-set and survive again ... enter QSF with the same objective as for the 15/16 season and that’s it.....

Now perhaps things have changed. But this appointment smacks of getting in the Spanish Sam Allardyce... a survival expert

We need a coach that can snap a team out of an extended poor run of form and turn things round - exactly what Quique couldn't do when he was here before. We averaged less than a point a game over the second half of his season and he had no idea how to change things up or inject any confidence into the team.

There's also no mention of contract length in the announcement so presumably he's here till the end of the season only, which is a bad message to send to the players.

Really worried about our chances of staying up for the first time since promotion.

Can you get me a gig as head of finding centre halves?

Submit my expenses for the year with trips to Colombia, Korea and all over Europe, to then present my recommendation that we sign a championship centre back whose fans think he's crap.

Watford have a history of reusing ex employees:

    Helguson
    Cathcart

    Foster
    Webber

    And of course Tommy Smith.

    It’ll be fine.............

I take issue with the use of 'pragmatic.'

QSF was anything but during his first spell. He had a plan which worked for a while but then could not adapt to the situation when it did not.

Even when it made no sense to sit and defend, like in a one off cup semi final, when losing, he had no interest in changing things.

He was the most unpragmatic coach we've had. At least Javi did change things up, although badly.

QSF will attempt to use the same 11 players in the same formation and the same, constipated way for a whole season, regardless of circumstance. That is not what pragmatic means.

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

To be fair to QSF, when he joined, he came as a 4-2-3-1 manager. There was outcry when he started with Deeney up front on his own after our free-scoring attacking play in the champ. He very quickly saw he had to change that to 4-4-2 to utilise Troy and Ighalo as a pair. Yes he struggled when the goals dried up but mainly due to limitations in the squad to play a different way. Look at the players we had then. Now with a solid 4-2-3-1 maybe he has the players to play on the break the way he always wanted to ? GD and Sarr either side of Hughes/Pereyra/Quina with Welbeck/TD/Gray up top ?

He wasn’t. Club exercised a break option he’d insisted on having in his contract.

Strange appointment, but as others have said he could be just what we need to sort out our defence. I'm also hoping (but not expecting) that with a much better collection of attacking players this time around he won't insist on playing four centre mids.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015–16_Watford_F.C._season

Had a look at our squad back then, and beyond Deeney and Ighalo there really was nothing in an attacking sense. Guedioura, Berghuis, Amrabat, Ibarbo and Anya, and that's it. None of these guys were premier League level, so no wonder we ended up with Abdi playing wide. Hopefully with Sarr, Deulofeu, Welbeck, Gray, Pereyra we might see his preferred 4-2-3-1 and some fast counter attacking football.

I'm really really trying to be positive, to the point I might be delusional.....

    Fingers crossed!

Only found out about this about an hour ago. Admittedly, I have been calling for Javi to go. Now that he has gone and been replaced by QSF i'm less certain. I certainly don't feel the optimism of many others. I don't this appointment will guarantee safety. I actually think there is a good chance he will be replaced before the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see how QSF sets up, with a far better squad than last time he was here. One things for certain though...It's never boring!!!

He is probably the person Gino knows is available and not a long term (if you can choose that wording) candidate. They know he is a better defensive organizer and that is exactly what the team needs as it is all over the shop defending as a unit from front to back. He also did not cost much given the severance packages to Gracia and his team will be large. Who knows will he bring in Ighalo and Shaarawy from his former club. Did reasonably well at Espanyol given the resources available to him.

What's that? Can he do casual? Oh hell YES he can do casual. Black tshirts are incredibly hard for a man to pull off. Not QSF.

'Meh he only ever wears black' they scoff.

    I don't think so!

We brought in Berghuis, Ibarbo and to a degree we had Layun who he insisted was a centre mid before shipping him out as well. They could have been good but we never saw them for more than 5 minutes.

Not to mention what he did to Almen Abdi...

  29. I recall Berghuis debut and he was absolute poney, totally out of his depth, yanked off at half time and he was fortunate to get 45 mins in my book
    Layun was a left back
    Ibarbo was a cheap punt
M Bia was several seasons before QSF

None of them were good enough to be a winger in the Premier league

Before he came to us QSFs CV was 4232 433. He tried playing 4231 in the first game at Everton, but then Iggy came on and scored, and after that both TD and Iggy were undroppable.

Well said. The revisionism of the QSF era is highly amusing. That squad was hot garbage.

Oddly I agree with both of these.
Totally underwhelmed by the appointment. Seems to be a short term panic appointment. Wonder whether the Pozzos have simply found nobody else fancies the poison chalice but they felt Gracia was simply going to get us relegated.

I recall us tearing Man Utd to shreds at Old Trafford under QSF with only a selfish Ighalo between us and winning about 3-0.

Couldn't see us doing that under Gracia.

Our squad when we came up was OK but wafer thin, I recall him having no options off the bench, when we signed Amrabat it was like oh wow!. I also remember so many games where we went 1-0 or 2-0 up and it was game over. We haven't had anywhere near that defensive stability since

What he did do was keep us up with ease on the first season back pottering about mid table on our return for most of the season, I think messers Wilder, Farke and Smith will be lauded should they do the same this year. Be good to see him given a better squad although that defence is weaker than the last time he was here as lets face Ake would walk into our current CB pairing

I was at that Everton game and the way we were set up and played, we were very comfortable and playing really well and deservedly winning.

I was chatting to a copper at half time who admitted he was a red which we both agreed to keep quiet and he said "Your boys look really good, very organised."

I was also at the Stoke game when Britos made his debut and we never looked in trouble. The problem was the squad was not PL standard and consistency and high performance levels was not in their locker.

QSF got the best out of an average squad - he has a better squad now (defensive liabilities granted) so hopefully we'll get more consistency and less boom or bust.
