These two are having some kind of Twitter spat.

Which of them was the better player though?

Shearer for me. Much more of a natural goal scorer than Owen who didn't have much once he lost his pace.

In terms of raw potential and ability, Owen was better than Shearer.

The injuries killed him as a player, though. They didn't only ruin his pace, they ruined his mental state because he was always expecting his legs to give way when he tried to run.

The career of an injury-free Owen would have been something to watch, but it just wasn't to be.

As far as punditry goes, it's like arguing over which type of diarrhoea is worse. A fruitless exercise.

Owen's worse as a pundit. At least Shearer has a smidgeon of an interesting accent. Owen just drones nasally.

Owen was a better player but I think it was harder to warm to him as a fan. There was something more talismanic about Shearer.

I think that about sums it up.

Shearer for me, even if he did kick Neil Lennon in the face once and then threatened to quit England if the FA gave him a ban retrospectively.

Owen claiming he had no problem with Shearer ..

Didn't he start the row with his comments ?!

Owen was always very one-dimensional and like most players of blistering pace, he was injury-prone and always destined to lose what he had quite early.

Shearer was a git, but a formidable player

Shearer was the complete striker in my opinion.

Goal poacher, could hit a screamer from outside the box, good in the air and strong enough to hold up the ball when needed.

If it were Top Trumps I think Owen would win on pace but lose on every other category compared to Shearer.

Shearer. He's actually a pretty decent pundit too.

Owen's comments smack of someone looking for a few column inches to shift copies of his book.

Jimmy Greaves. Better than Owen and Shearer in their prime and a deadly finisher. Either foot or the head. Great balance and composure in front of the goal not to mention accuracy. Englands greatest striker

In todays mad transfer market he would be worth over £200M.

Shearer without question. Last of the old fashioned breed of English strikers. Can do the ugly with technique.

    Shearer was the better striker.
Own had the world at his feet but for whatever reason it never really happened for him.
Shearer is a dreadful pundit. It was wondersful to see him relegate his beloved NUFC.

Michael Owen married a woman who is the spitting image of his sister. I think that says all we need to know about the man.

Shearer had pace until injuries took their toll, but remained a formidable player afterwards.

Aside from their playing ability, does no one else think that Michael Owen is actually a very good pundit? No other football pundit talks with such expertise and precision about anything the way that Owen talks about finishing and technique.

It seems a bit of a waste that he hasn't done more in the way of coaching, if he could be bothered I reckon he'd be very good at it.

From what I read most find him dull and boring but personally haven't heard him much .

Yep, which is why I've found myself surprised at how perceptive he actually is. I think lots of people are influenced by his slightly monotone voice and his general reputation as being a bit of a dullard in his personal life, but when it comes to actually talking about football he really knows his onions.
