    I completed Leamington Spa half on Sunday. My first half since November but it felt comfortable which I put completely down to having a proper stretching session beforehand. I've never been one to stretch before or after a run but as I'm getting older it is getting harder to recover, this video has been a complete game changer though. I try and do it a couple of times a week and also before any run - I can't recommend it enough. It has also helped with some lower back pain I've been having;

I've always gone with a pair of Watford shorts and the shirt of one of the various clubs I've been to see abroad - never had any actual running stuff.

Think I've got the dreaded plantar fasciitis... really bad arch pain, especially when I run. I really don't want to stop running as it helps keep my mind straight as well as fitness.

I have got flat(ish) feet and have orthotics in my shoes in and out of work. My running shoes are ones for over-pronation too, recently went from Asics GT 1000 5 to a pair of GT 1000 6, though I still use a pair of the 5's at work.

Any advice?? I had some ice on it last night and rolling a massage ball under it. Currently sat at my desk today rolling a can of deodorant under it.

I've never been quick at running (circa 25 half marathons, only two at sub 2h, most are sub 2h10m) but I'm keen to change that. I've been advised to do some gym work to help my core. The only exercise I do is running so it makes sense to mix things up. I had a PT session last night which has opened my eyes a bit (and made me fall hopelessly in love with the trainer - wow) but she has also advised that I review my diet. I'm a good few stone lighter than a few years ago but she has recommended to help build my strength that I try a low carb/high protein diet.

When I first started losing weight it was following the slimming world way and that worked for me, but other than that my knowledge isn't great on whats good to eat when trying to eat a low carb high protein diet. Any advice on what is good to get down me would be appreciated.

My contract on my job ended, so whilst looking for a new one i've decided to start running again. Managed to get up to 5k (bare in mind i'm awful at running and have never been good at it) and now I can do 5k fairly comfortably, by that I mean I can do it without walking. However last week I pushed myself again and did 7k, and it was fine. I ached afterwards but I could do it. Have since tried to do it twice and got to 5.5k and almost thrown up.

Does anyone else get this? I've found as well even when I go for shorter 20 min 3.5k runs I still struggle and it doesn't feel any easier than it did 6 weeks ago when I started, despite being able to run further. I find it frustrating, because my GF can not run for 6 months and then do a half marathon without trying or training. Is it just bad genes?

Just the thought of running makes me want to throw up.

Running gives you jowls and a horrible emaciated looking physique with sallow skin.

"Cor! Look at that marathon runner. I'd love to look like them!"

    Said no-one ever.

Once you hit 40, it's either skinny or fat. The middle aged body doesn't do any other options.

I'd rather look a bit gaunt than a bloater, or worse, skinny but with a big gut hanging off the front.

You missed out the Pete Docherty Physique. A man that manages to be skinny and fat at the same time.

I did the Watford 10k in March in under 1 hour, quite comfortably (which is OK for me) but since then, I can't maintain that pace for even 5k.

I've no idea why - maybe fatigue? I did have a couple of weeks off recently - boozing and eating terribly due to holidays, and then went for a 4k on Saturday and was back down to near 6min/km which is good. I think my legs are just getting tired.

I'm no expert so don't take my advice.

I've been press ganged into doing the Ricky Road Run in October. It's 10 miles with hills so I'm upping the training a bit. Anyone on here doing it?

Stepping up now then Diamond! Good stuff.

I'm doing the Great North Run on Sunday - well up for it now even though it's my first half.

Yeah really stepping up the miles per week now. 1 x 10K, 1 x 8 miler and a parkrun. Good luck doing the GNR, what sort of training are you putting in for that?

I've been following this pretty much:

Some of those Thursday runs have been a pain in the arse. I don't mind a long run on a Sunday morning but midweek isn't good.

I feel your pain, sister. Midweek running is tricky especially on a Thursday evening when I'm knackered. But a long Sunday morning run is brilliant escapism.

Just got home after the 4hr+ drive. Smashed my target - did it in 1.52:58. Well happy with that, especially for my first half marathon.

First organised race I’ve done too and loved the atmosphere around the course. I normally run at home with earbuds in but didn’t bother for this race and definitely made the right call. Loads of people out cheering and supporting, music, tonnes of handouts from the crowds. I grabbed an ice pop at around 10 miles (needed it) but decided to give the guys handing out half pints of beer a swerve. Had quite a few shout outs from people, as my racenumber had my name on and I was in my Watford shirt so that came up a bit too. Little motivators like that count.

The scale of the GNR blows your mind a bit though. Took over 18 mins for me to reach the start line as we shuffled up after the elite men went off. That definitely hampered my chances of catching Mo. Plus there’s never a point when it remotely thins out. It seemed like I spent a lot of time overtaking too because of over estimating how long it’d take me to finish when I went in for the ballot 9 months ago. Presented its own issue, dodging people in their own little bubble.

    Will definitely do it again.

Will take a look. I was looking at a half which goes from Uxbridge to Cassio Park along the Grand Union but the logistics were annoying (my car would be at the start line when I was at the finish).

This might be a better step up for me from 10k.

I did the Grand Union half a couple of years ago. Nice and flat, though a bit muddy in the more rural bits and some militant cyclist had a hissy fit because people didn't jump out of the way into the canal, meaning his Bradley Wiggins wet dream was spoilt.

Tapped my dad up for a lift. Got him to pick me up from Watford Junction and drop me in Uxbridge.

He's always happy to help people, but I think he'd draw the line at picking strangers up at 8am on a Sunday morning.

The Leighton Buzzard dirt half in November is good fun. Starts and finishes at Cedars school. 5 miles or so up the canal, 4 miles through woodland, then 4 miles back along the canal. It's a decent event to do. Cedars is a short walk from the station as well.

It was a bit tougher than I expected so missed out slightly on my target but still finished in 1.34.03. I was across the start line within 2 mins of the elites so I didn't experience too much of an issue with overcrowding. Some of climbs weren't steep but dragged on for a bit. I was fatigued early so was glad to see the finish! The support on the course was superb, by far the best I've ever encountered. I got goosebumps going down the finish straight and for the first time imagined what it's kind of like for runners like Sir Mo.

Done it a few years ago. It was decent for a low key event. Be careful as it's not on closed roads and a couple of times I had a near miss with a car. I've got it pencilled in this year so will do it depending it doesn't impact training for other events.

My right foot has gone numb, like pins and needles when you touch it. Been like it about 5 days now and worse after running. Any ideas?

I did tear my calf about 8 weeks ago (the day before I went on holiday) and was back running about a week after. Could it be related?
