Foulquer couldn't bomb forward, he's got no left foot. Fortunately we had Big Isaac in front of him, showing more commitment than I've ever seen from him before, giving us width on the left and actually tracking back to support Foulquer.

Think if he doesnt start janmaat there will be big questions if kiko puts in another stinker. Sarr I'm not so sure, personally I dont think he set the world alight yesterday and him starting would mean one of hughes or GD might not which I think would be a big decision for javi.

I thought Chalobah was poor in the first half but improved steadily the more touches he had, and had a good second half

Sarr reminds me of football in the early 60s, when wingers were expected to punt the ball past the full-back, run like hell after it and belt it onto the centre-forward's head. If you weren't there last night, think Bill Punton in Norwich's 1959-60 Division III promotion campaign. Except that Sarr's crosses aren't so good and we don't have Jenkins or Reilly up top.

That said, Sarr is young and new to English football, so I'm hoping my first impressions are wrong. He did take his goal well though.

Honestly, only Janmaat right now. He should have been playing anyway and last night served to highlight that.

As for the others I think it’s more a case of ‘who can step in if one of the starters deserves to be dropped’ rather than ‘who is too good to leave out’.

Kabasele’s pace could be useful in our back line but we all know he can be a liability at times.
Foulquier looked competent but so he should against a League One team. Didn’t look entirely comfortable on the left. Can’t remember him using his left foot.
Quina and Chalobah did alright. I love how willing Quina is to receive the ball no matter how many players are round him, but he needs to learn when to keep it simple and retain possession in those scenarios, rather than trying to wriggle away from several players by himself. Chalobah was poor first half and did shirk a few tackles. Was dictating play and pinging passes all over by the end but he was afforded far more time and space than he would be in the Premier League.
Success was poor besides his sublime assist for the first. Can’t fault his effort though. He tracked back and helped Foulquier out.
Sarr was poor besides his goal. Mason had him in his pocket in the first half, no word of a lie. He looks like he has 1 move when he gets the ball with his back to goal - drop the shoulder then try to spin the other way - he got figured out and was dispossessed every time he got it to feet. Far happier running on to a ball in space but even then kept playing it too far ahead of himself and even with his mad pace couldn’t recover it every time.
Pereyra took a long time to get in to the game but from about 30 mins until he came off was the best player on the pitch.
Welbeck made some good runs that weren’t found. Hopefully the others learn to spot those and play him in. Movement was pretty good but he should have scored a header second half, looked like the defender put him off and he just missed it.
Peñaranda played well when he came on. Good feet, didn’t overdo things like he did against Woking last year. Great touch for the goal and wonderful finish. Probably won’t play again until the next round though.

Interesting. Who do you think would win if you pitted last nights line-up vs Gracia's usual team? I'd be a close run thing imo.

Interesting question. I agree it would be close but I think ultimately Capoue and Doucoure would win the midfield battle and that would be the deciding factor.

More players besides Janmaat could well deserve a place in the ‘first XI’ but I don’t think last night was enough to warrant wholesale change just yet.

Jaanmat made at least four great interceptions to cover for the shortcomings of the central defenders as well as scoring a good goal. He also found himself in acres of space on the wing numerous times, only to be ignored by Sarr and Quina.

It is not just about last night though, it's about last night and the 3 league games. Not just who deserves to be given an automatic start because they defeated a league 1 side, but who has to be dropped because they need a rest/benching for their own good, or just because they are poor.

From Saturday's game, I would say that Doucoure, At least one of the Craigs, Kiko and Hughes need to not start at Newcastle. Who replaces them, well, there are options in that line up from last night IMO.

Do you think last night will have gi ven Javi more time if Newcastle beat us and we play poo at the back again?

Doucoure not in his best form, but I think we’d miss him of he was dropped. Neither Quina or Chalobah looked better to me. Both have more gears to go up but I don’t think they’re at his level right now.

One of the Craigs perhaps. It’s hard to tell which one is more at fault or if it’s the fullbacks/midfield that are leaving them exposed and neither are to blame. Kabasele would be my choice if one were dropped, but before that I would change the fullbacks and make them sit deeper, using actual wingers for width and letting them focus firstly on defending. If we still concede 3 goals a game then I’d drop one/both!

Hughes is a valid point though. Probably needs taking out the team but I don’t know who would replace him. I was disappointed with Sarr who doesn’t look physically ready for English football yet. Maybe Deulofeu moved over to the right and put Pereyra back in on the left.

Keep scratching my head about the whole Peneranda situation. Unless he’s had a proper sulky attitude I can’t get my head around how Success is constantly ahead of him? It was only woking but I thought he showed what he can do, and it’s certainly things success can’t. It’s another threat off the bench if nothing else. Even if he’s a selfish player. If you need a goal from nothing with 20 to go surely he’s a better bet?

He's clearly a better technical footballer than Success. Good point. I doubt it's physicality either, as a bunch of League 1 cloggers couldn't handle him.

I think he's the best passer in the team. Ironically Mr "Never gives the ball away" is very wasteful with possession.

Mark Robins is no mug and Coventry looked well organised and up for it. They had, I think, done some homework and had plans to get in behind Watford's defence. Watford gradually got on top of them but the game was anybody's until the first goal. From then on Watford drew further and further away from them and by the end of the game were over the horizon. Coventry are a decent First Div side, but that's it: Their players showed they are slower, less physically strong, less skilful and less experienced than our players and Watford exploited it more and more.
They had a quick player at right wing and I thought Foulquier dealt with him well and generally had a good, if unspectacular, game. I've not seen him before and apparently he was playing out of position. Perhaps not yet, but if Javi feels the need to defend better (!), a competent boring full back might be just the ticket.
Talking of quick right wingers, Sarr is one: As his (promo video?) showed he has a limited touch and pace to spare. Knocking the ball a long way past the full back is, I would have thought, part of the package: The longer the distance the race involves the greater the distance Sarr can overtake his man. This worked. Used in this way the only way defenders can stop him is by fouling him or dropping back far enough to severely restrict the space behind. His crossing is variable. He looks raw for the Premier L.
But his presence could be game -changing: Both teams would have to adapt to exploit/stop his abilities. The crunch might be Watford adapting; it would be completely wrong to constantly use our current slow build-up play when he is to be employed.

I'm getting into this. I might do a part 2 after lunch.

I'd be torn between Foulqier and Holebas but in fairness he's had one game against a league one side.

    Quina over Doucoure, definitely.

    Part 2:
Lunch was home-made BLT; very nice.
Quina is a player I've liked from the word 'go'. He has a wide range of high-end abilities and shows tremendous enthusiasm for the game. He always wants the ball.
BUT: Like Pereyra, Deulofeu, Penaranda and several others at Watford, he wants to beat one man too many. It worked against Div 1 opposition. It won't work in the Premier. And, when a player is in the last line of defence, it can be disastrous. They nick the ball off you and it's one-on-one time against your 'keeper. He must tailor his actions to suit his position on the pitch. According to the match programme he is 19. So that excuses him. But I can see why he doesn't start for the first team. This must surely be a coaching issue, when so many of our players read the game so badly. Is it being addressed? Kabasele ditto.
I think Quina is one of the most talented ball-players at the club, and that's saying a lot. He should be in the first team as soon as we can get him there.
Penaranda is good at sparkling against lesser opposition, but for me, goal last night or not, he is behind Quina.
The ability and experience of Marriappa, Pereyra and Janmat stood out last night. Janmat man of the match.
Wellbeck is coming back after a long time off and I thought his movement off the ball and his touch and reading of the game improved as the game went on.
Gomes had hardly anything to do. Why not play Bachmann instead?

It is 100% guaranteed they would punch random watford fans before and after the game. Absolutely not just those "up for it". The chances of you getting hit would still be small, but the chances of someone innocent getting hit are 100%.

They are complete and utter neanderthal scum. It has to be seen to be believed.

Again, none taken-we are where we are and though it's embarrassing that's the reality for now. Just from my brief observations there is a lot of unnecessary pessimism on here considering that the bottom half of the PL is much of a muchness with not a great deal to choose between them-writing yourselves off in August is a bit melodramatic. Besides, even if you do finish bottom £100 mill is still coming your way.

    All the best
