Well, he was selected. Not convinced he actually played.

Adam Lyth is a good county opener but has never got rid of the flaws when he was last in the test team.

Agreed. But none of them have. There aren’t really two good openers in the system. Personally, I’d happily go back to Cook but never gonna happen.

Masterful bowling performance from Steven Finn tonight. “He’s one of our own...”etc.

Yep. Great to see him back on it for the mighty Middle! Double over Surrey in the T20 is pretty satisfying too.

Morgan and De Villers took the Surrey bowlers apart with a 100 odd partnership.

Surrey started well with Finch and Sam Curran motoring along but once Steve Finn got to work that was game over .

Any chance Finn might get an Ashes call?

As many of our top fast bowlers are crocked right now, and Finn has created havoc in the Aussie camp in the not to distant past.

    Test #2 squad confirmed.
    Leach in for Ali.
Good. He can open the batting too.
Archer presumed to play in place of Anderson.

Don’t get your hopes up. That Leach innings against Ireland was bizarre. His batting for the Cidermen has been awful all season.

    No.

His test chances never really recovered from when he was dropped in Oz when he was our leading wicket taker.

Yes unfortunate. Winter 2011. He was at that point our best attacking bowler but was going at 4+ an over at a time when the agreed tactic was to strangle the Aussies, pinning them down until they risked driving and nicked to slips outside the offstump.

Only 48 hours until the agony starts again Fortress Lord's.

Although it's a fortress for the visitors.

Yes though Wednesday looks like it will be completely rained off. Saturday too (though the weather can change in 5 days). Would be good to get a draw under our belts and remove the 0-5 risk.

    Excellent news!

Any weather bulletin for the Stanley Park area of Liverpool mid Sat pm?

Unfortunately I don't think that will be a rained-off-draw .........so a 5-0 whitewash is still on.

Looks like being a 4 day test match - hardly any chance of play today at this rate.

3 day....it will rain most of Friday and some of Saturday :-(

In which case, we’ll have them hanging on with 8 down on Sunday evening.

Probably still their first innings though after Smith has made 140something.....

    Steady rain in SW London.

The time in proceedings when Arlott would attack the claret.

So we have lost the toss and are made to bat. Good call by the Aussies given the shortened game. Very difficult to win batting first unless we are somehow able to force a follow on. Getting enough runs quickly enough to declare in the 3rd innings of a 4 day game is very difficult.

    It's my job !
And in that vein, how many runs for the opening partnership and then the team total ? I reckon 5 and 190 respectively.

  26. The undeniable truth

Ok so I was 5 runs too optimistic for the opening partnership....0/1. Roy out, lasted 3 balls and was beaten by the first 2 balls before the third got him out.

I'm hoping Joe Root will step down after this series. Worst captain since Deeney.
