The rise of Adam Masina

    Is now.

Hear me out. This is not a joke.

Before signing for us, he was Bologna’s 2nd best player in his first season, followed by 2 more seasons ranking in at number 4.

When this move was being discussed many fans of the serie A were all saying this was an incredible signing. All stating that he was in their top 3 LB’s for the past few seasons. So this leads me to believe that unbiased fan views, he’s good enough, statistics prove that he is good enough.

So what has gone wrong? I fully believe it’s a lack of opportunity. Holebas has kept him out the side, and rightly so. However Holebas is now 35!! He can’t keep up. It’s time for Masina. If we give him a run of games to get his confidence up, he could go from boo boy to fan hero. He just needs a chance. There is a very good player in there, it’s just needs to come out. The only way this happens is with trust and opportunities. Not every time he played for us last season was terrible, he did a some decent games too.

It’s time for Javi to change everything, 4-2-2-2 has been found out. Not only does the formation need to change but the starting 11 as well. Starting with Masina at LB.

Anyone who didn’t feature yesterday has become a significantly better player.

I don't disagree with the sentiment
For it to work, accepting that Adam has always been more a WB than a 442 style FB, then it would need to be a 352 and that requires us to have 3 (at least 2) mobile CBs
That might be the issue faced

I would like us to try a change of system. I think it would also suit Femenía, or even Janmaat, but I don’t think it will happen.

If Gino wasn’t so tight fisted we could’ve had Rose playing instead of Holebas yesterday.

Totally agree. I think there is a good player in there. But he hasn't really had more than the odd decent game so far, but I think that is a lack of confidence, as you say.

Give him a run of games.

It was a crap performance from Holebas yesterday but he was in our top three or four players last season. Masina was ok when we played but not good enough to warrant replacing Holebas after just one poor game.

I would agree but the issue is he needs games and time to adjust to the Premier League, which can be risky short term. I think the same argument could be made for Kabesele who is our most talented centre half but had a mare last year, and his confidence is presumably shot to pieces.

Rose was hopeless defensively against Villa.

Positional understanding & basic ability to mark his man lacking.

A classic top 6 full back who is really a winger.

    Or whinger.

MarkoaS I agree with you, my apologies but I didn't see this thread until just now. I had already suggested Masina coming into the side in the 'Javi Out' thread. You're spot on, give the lad a run of games to settle in.

    Can he actually tackle?

If he can he goes above holevas

I would say Hughes is our best tackler.

He was, but at 35 we really need to start playing Masina in my opinion. Masina has a much higher level, he just needs games. No better time than now to try it. He also only 25 and is much quicker than Holebas. Also dropping Holebas seems to kick his bottom into gear so it’s a win win.

What about shoving Deeney in defense? He has proven he can do the job when he actually tracks back. Give his spot to Delafoo/Welbeck/Success even.

I suspect Rose is one of those who has always had his pace to him out of scrapes.

Once you loose the edge off your pace, a really modest defender can be revealed.

I reckon Levy has done us a big favour here.

Without Vertonghen & Eriksen, Spurs looked distinctly mid table.

Dawson's a real trier although he may struggle against top 15 teams.

We are already forced to leave out (Quinoa, Chalobah)/play out of position (Hughes) some of our best offensive players to accommodate lumbering Troy and his ability to perform the key task of his position in this era of football (playing as a lone centre forward), I'm not sure how altering the formation to remove a further attacking player when we've just signed two upgrades in those positions would help us, especially when, as has been noted already (tbf) it would mean increasing the ratio on the pitch of players from our shallowest pool of talent.

This is part of an interesting dilemma, and one I commented on a few weeks ago in regards to the Foster/Bachmann situation.

Holebas is just one of several of our antediluvian squad who are at the Schrodinger point where they're brilliant and exactly the players they always have been for us, right up until the second they're not.

For our social media, Instagram worshipping generation, it's like those posts that go 'One day your mother picked you up, put you down and never picked you up again'; in our case, 'One day an ageing footballer put in a high level performance, went back to the changing room at the final whistle and never put in a high level performance again'.

The trouble is, we won't know when that time comes until we see it happen in front of our eyes and suffer the consequences. It's like the sword of Damocles is constantly scuttling up and down the left wing, ready to drop at any second.

One swallow does not a summer make, but we shall have to watch out and see if this does become a pattern. I suspect the Pozzos had some privileged awareness of this given the deadline day attempt for Rose, and will be paying close attention in an effort to withdraw their money from the Jose machine at exactly the right time before investing it somewhere else in January.

P.S. on the Schrodinger point, like many I was extremely disappointed to see Gomes on the bench as the number 2. To my un-privileged eyes a grave mistake, and hopefully one that will be rectified as the season goes on.

  26. Lack of pace - he'd have to swap from being the lone centre forward to the lone centre back, the one hanging back at the edge of the penalty area.

Perhaps quicker than a half-fit 35 year-old Holebas, but even then it's marginal.

Don't know where the evidence is for Masina having a much higher level? He's been cack whenever he's played, and clearly he can't have been impressing the club much in training either as it's clear the club have zero faith in him when a disintegrating Holebas is still picked ahead of him, and the club want to sign another new LB already.

We need a new LB to replace Holebas; Masina isn't the answer. Have we got anyone from the new U23s? Maybe even Foulquier (though I doubt that too)? Really we just needed to sign a new LB before the window closed, but left it too late.

I was surprised and disappointed to see Gomes on the bench too.

But from what you say it's lucky we didn't sign this guy Damocles.

No "privileged awareness" needed, just two eyes and a brain.

I already commented way back in May that we could soon find ourselves in this situation:
""However, in January I wouldn't be surprised if we also needed a new first choice GK and new first choice LB, in case Foster and Holebas' declines turn out to be irreversible.""
    http://wfcforums.com/index.php?threads/keep-bench-sell.55790/page-2#post-2742903

And by the QPR friendly it was clear to me that the situation had already come to pass:
"Holebas looked far behind the fitness levels of the rest of the team and was caught out of position a lot."

Congratulations Mr Rous, you're officially the only person who noticed the multiple ruinous mistakes Foster made in the last month of the season and spoke up. It's heroes like you that don't receive the recognition they deserve. One of the great injustices of our world, when those Kardashians are making off with millions :)
