Is Javi’s job safe?

I ask the question because since the semi final win against wolves we’ve been bloody awful. Today we didn’t play with any belief, passion or conviction. I really believe if we don’t get on a winning run very soon, Gracia could be the first casualty of this season

Usually we've managed to start new seasons as if they were "clean slates" as it were - either with a new manager or from the players somehow dusting themselves off and picking themselves back up again.

This is the first time the bad form and bad habits of the end of a previous season seem to have crept in to a new one.

It's a major worry, and for that reason it seems pretty clear that he's at risk. He'll maybe be given until Sarr has got in the team, but if things don't turn around quickly then he'll be gone.

The Pozzo way will def be to get rid if we keep playing as poorly until the first international break.

Having said all that, Gracia isn't helped by a bunch of players where the lingering background concerns about their ages might finally be coming to pass. I can't see many managers being able to do much with this creaking back line.

A decent manager could. QSF kept as tighter then a nuns kunt with a worse back line.

We know the score, SD has always said managers have a shelf life.

Whilst getting to the cup final was a great achievement we blew finishing top 10 and then obviously got demolished in the final anyway.

If he can no longer motivate the players then he has to go.

  6. The problem lies with his stubborn insistence on 4222 hoof to Deeney. I think it will be his undoing.

I think he's laughably overrated by our fans and a bang average manager, but Pozzo isn't giving him much chance to improve things when our biggest investment in our dog s**t defence is a £4m, past his prime Championship centre back.

That said, he's an irritatingly stubborn, one dimensional fool who won't make tactical changes or drop his bias towards certain players despite how obviously crap they are.

I kind of agree. We ended awfully last season. Think if the next 5 games are poor Pozzo won't be afraid to act.

And then the new bloke just inherits the Pozzo generated defensive problems.

True, but it comes down to tactics as well as the personnel. Won't write Javi off yet though, but this is a true test of his credentials as a manager.

Crazy - but almost understandable to have this thread start within an hour of our first result. Others will come on here slating fans for even thinking this - but just as one swallow does not make a summer, one defeat does not make a winter. But it sure feels cold at the moment.

Not one for 'knee jerk' reactions after the first game of the season, but have to agree with those saying about how we've carried on from where we left off last season.

Can't see anything at Everton away, we'll be lucky to get a result at home to a decent West Ham side and Newcastle away could go either way, then it's Arsenal after the International Break. Is there a chance he could be replaced before that game? Very possible.

I think first and foremost he needs to drop this dogshit 4-2-2-2 which has been well and truly sussed out now. Sarr could be his saviour, but I worry about us defensively.

Want him to do well, but fear that it could get worse before it gets better.

It’s one game in, but the manner of that defeat was worrying. I thought Brighton showed more desire. I think we will be better going forward when we get the likes of Delefeou fully fit, and get Wellbeck and Sarr fit. But that defence looks pants

I don’t excuse Javi for rigidly sticking to the same formation and tactics time and time again.

But - Giraldi, Gino etc are responsible for recruitment and they tied one hand behind Gracia’s back last season with the defence. They’ve tied the other one this summer by just adding Dawson and thinking that was adequate. The signing of Sarr is great - but to an extent it was pulling the wool over fans eyes regarding the defence.

And when it comes to the next round of recruitment, we will no doubt be told we have no money or can’t compete etc etc.

If you can possible take one thing from today - I’d say if it means selling Doucoure to create enough funds to sign 2 quality defenders, I think we should seriously consider it.

Head coach at Watford will never be a ‘safe’ job under the Pozzo’s. Nobody is immune to criticism, regardless of what they may have achieved previously.
The capitulation in the league towards the end of last season could be waved away as we were “distracted”. This lost some credence after the humiliation in that cup final, but again it could be dismissed as “it was City”.
However these in combination with the shambolic start we suffered today have to be taken seriously. There was no progression, no improvement to be seen today. We’re always criticised by the outside world for changing managers too often but this was hardly a glowing advertisement for continuity.

It’s very early days and I expect he will quite rightly be given plenty of time to get it right, but today was an eye opener. If he doesn’t get it right, somebody else will be given the chance to.

Depends what you mean by safe?
Would Gino act if we're in the bottom 3 around Christmas? Yes.
Is he likely to get the chop in the next month? No.

He's done well for us overall. Hopefully today was our 'freak result' for the season. I don't think anyone can defend the fact that we are so one dimensional. He has been at the club long enough to have developed an alternative system.

If we get to the Sheffield United match, still looking for a victory, I think he should go.

Yes Javi's job is safe. New season new slate and I don't think the Pozzo's have given him all the tools to work with. BUT - he has to show he can be flexible tactically, he's been fantastic for a while but there's a clear point where we seem to have been found out. The modern game renders 4-4-2 very ineffective against a good press, which is increasingly popular in the Prem. We have the tools up front to switch it up so let's give Javi time to do it.

As for that defence - not sure what he can do with those clueless ****s.

Deeney needs to be nothing more than an impact sub for the sake of our evolution.

Confidence is like a good reputation:
It takes a while to gain and can disappear in the blink of an eye.
The fact that today's loss continues the poor form is alarming. Javi needs to change and change fast or he will be out of a job and we will be up **** street.
The warning signs have been there since the cup semi final.

I think that is what is most alarming. As many have also said, look at the form since Wolves.

Ok did well at Huddersfield, but every othet result was poor. You can say Water Under the Bridge but its an alarming statistic. Its not Gracia I worry for, its the players lack of motivation and commitment.
