The stories have not been exaggerated in any way, shape or form. I last visited for a stag weekend a few years ago. The stag and party (including two former Watford players, albeit just about) had their eyes opened somewhat.

    Better prospects?

Everton have been more of a ‘graceful decline’ option rather than ‘brutal ascent’.

Walcott, Rooney Mk 2, Rojo, Jagielka.

Who was the last kid that Everton turbo charged?

    The Boy Rooney?

It’s a shame you are reverting to the stereotypical Everton fan. You hide it well for about 18 months.

With their resources who would you expect to finish higher in the table over the next 3 years ?

A lot of that was tongue-in-cheek and some of it was devil's advocate. You'll forgive me if I strayed into the realms of playing the antagonist (I still say you're mental if you're suggesting we aren't currently a step up from Watford though. But then I would, I suppose).

My algorithm suggests that the lines will cross in our favour during the reign of the vacuous playboy George VII.

Presumably, Maurice Johnston was not in the party.

Ah Mo, I'd almost forgotten he played for Watford.

No, although I do have one Mo Johnston anecdote which is worth sharing. As you'll doubtless be aware, Mo liked a drink. Mo liked several drinks as it goes.

One evening during his stay up here, Mo had been partaking and was driving, somewhat erratically, on his way home. He was pulled over by the local constabulary but Mo, upon stopping the car, decided not to engage in any conversation but instead opened the driver's door, abandoned his car and began to flee across the adjacent field.

The policeman gave chase. The copper in question was in his 50s and, at a rough estimate, weighed about 19 stone, he was weeks from retirement at this point. He caught Mo with relatively little difficulty.

The officer was a neighbour of ours and told this story often in our local to anyone who bought him a pint.

At one time or another, most of the great drinkers of the English game have turned up in these parts at some point. By and large the locals embraced it if you delivered on the pitch, it would be fair to say that Mo was never the most popular player to have pulled on the royal blue...

I’d forgotten that he had donned that shirt but a supreme player when he had that nip to him.

Sounds like booze/age/his Celtic body got the better of him.

Btw, how’s it going to go tomorrow?

Unsure. Some of the new signings (Kean, Gbamin and Iwobi) are unlikely to be ready to play. Delph is injured (may have to get used to that one).

In theory we should have enough to beat them (particularly if Zaha doesn't play), but there's a story waiting to be written I think and it's not one which favours us.

  17. RookeryDad

    You may well spank them.

Odd how new signings are treated in this virginal fashion.

Start them, with instructions to kick their opposite number in first 2 mins.

Why? Are you writing what you write to motivate the team ? I’m just saying a move to Everton would be a step up. More money, better prospects, higher profile.

  19. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Not really. Just seeing if you agree they have better prospects over the next 3 years.

  20. A step up to you perhaps.

But each player has their own individual motivations, objectives, requirements so there is no universal definition of what a step up means.

Doucoure doesn't think Everton are a step up.

Danny Welbeck chose Watford over Everton and others so doesn't think Everton are a step up.

    Richarlison does.

I thought this was a joke. You aren't actually, really suggesting that Everton tried to get Danny Welbeck, are you?

  22. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Of course he thinks they are a step up for all the obvious reasons stated before (pay, prospects, prestige etc). He either doesn't see them as a big enough step up, ie no euro football, or we have told him he can't go there, or the fee offered wasn't quite big enough. Wouldn't be surprised to see him go there in Jan if they are doing well and there are no offers from the current big 6. Or maybe he has his heart set on PSG ?
The prospect of Everton being considered a step up from Watford is clearly hurting your sense of pride ?

TBF Welbeck was being linked with Everton in the media but I'd be surprised if you were seriously in for him.

  24. toffeeblue9

No media source with any credibility as far as Everton goes were linking him with Everton. That's being very selective with referencing media sources.

For instance, I've not disputed the "Doucoure didn't think Everton were a step up" comments, but in the French media (where the news about the bid initially broke) it was suggested he wanted the move.

See post #325 on the DW thread though I think it was also reported elsewhere. Was just pointing out to confirm LTC hadn't just dream't it up.

Reported by Duncan Castles (Sunday Times and Daily Record) on his Twitter account on 8 August. Previously posted by Hornetboy1 on the Danny Welbeck thread:
"On top of a series of rejected late-in-the-window bids for Abdoulaye Doucoure, understand that Everton attempted to sign Danny Welbeck yesterday before he completed a long-planned move to Watford.
Such a convivial relationship between the two clubs..."

    DUNCAN CASTLES ?!?!?

This is a fella who is literally trying to carve a career out for himself by talking about transfer rumours. He has a podcast dedicated to it.

Again, anyone with any semblance of credibility as far as Everton goes hasn't reported it. Paul Joyce, Andy Hunter, Dominic King etc - if they've reported it, you can take it with a high degree of certainty that there's some truth in it. We might not necessarily always sign the players they reference, but if they report it then you can bet we had an interest. King and Joyce are Liverpool fans by the way, but they are trusted sources.

Look at the logic of it anyway - we had already signed a striker and have 4 senior ones on our books. Why would we try and get another one who wouldn't play? (And that's not to be disparaging about Welbeck, but we've just signed a lad from Juventus who is being hyped up as one of European football's next big things and our manager and DoF have spoken about the importance of Calvert-Lewin getting minutes). Silva also did an interview last week where he referenced the positions we wanted - he said one right back, one striker, one winger, one centre back and possibly another centre mid

We signed Sidibe for the right back area
    Moise Kean as the striker
    Alex Iwobi as the winger
We failed miserably in our pursuit of a centre back, but there were a number of well-documented approaches
We clearly made an approach to get Doucoure as that centre mid but by the looks of things he was our one and only target in that areas as there were no other credible rumours (barring some spurious ones in France about Morgan Sanson)

Yes I guess you’ve PM’d the lot of them. There are some very smart people on this forum. You’re not one of them. Read back your posts over the last day or two after a stiff drink if you dare. It’s getting embarrassing. Time to cut and run. Of course they are a bigger club and would have been a step up in pay, and Euro prospects. You have no idea what Doucs really thinks or how close he was to being sold. It’s also highly unlikely (but granted, not impossible) that we beat Everton to the signature of Welbeck.

I think people aren't understanding each other's point. Everton may be the bigger club but that doesn't mean a move from Watford to there is a 'step up'.
La_Tempesta is totally correct in that the bigger club willy waving is a thing done by fans and not players. If going to a bigger club was a step up then all our squad would just bugger off to Sheffield Wednesday.

Agreed. Everton are a bigger club with bigger prospects over the next 3-5 years and an intermediate step up between us and the 4-6 champ league teams. Sheff Wed are not.
