The season is about to start. No doubt with similar outcomes to last season and more of the same attendant hype, nonsense that accompany the PL circus. Please put all discussion regarding the Premier League into this thread for the season ahead. Thank you.

Tonight's game will be interesting, a slightly misfiring Liverpool up against Norwich who are a bit of an unknown quantity in the Prem. I know Norwich have a similar style of play to Bournemouth but havent seen a lot of them.

Not a big fan of Naaarch but I would love them to win tonight just for the scouse meltdown that would follow.

Also it would be good for one of our title rivals to start with a loss.

Am I dreaming or did Martin Tyler just suggest we could challenge the top 6? If so that is truly astonishing.

He loves us after Javi gave the Woking manager that airport bottle of sangria.

So the next direct train back to Naarch is at 6.45 am. Lol. Sky don't give a **** do they.

It’s going to be torturous if the next few weeks’ commentary involves the same thinking out loud about the rules and VAR and whatever else as in this game.

“Breath of fresh air” says Carragher about Norwich, as they get completely mullered against his old team. 3-0 down inside half an hour. No wonder he likes what they’re bringing to the party.

Haven't seen Norwich take a hit like this since the last time their city centre allowed cars to run pedestrians over.

VAR glitch already. Boos from the crowd as second half kick off delayed.

  17. Gonna be a long season for Norwich, they need to learn fast

Ha, Carragher turned on Norwich completely now. “Absolutely stupid, naive...”

The Norwich kit is ghastly, makes their players look even more unseemly. Not sure what dafabet is but it sounds like something one might associate with a simpleton or a duffer. They’re not a very attractive team.

Norwich do look good going forward and have been much better defensively second half. They’ll cause a lot of teams problems.

Not as embarrassing for Norwich as the cup final was for us.

Wouldn't write them off entirely from this game.

Though in case they do end up going down, their left back Lewis looks a very good prospect. If we stay up and are still in the market for an LB next summer then he could be an option.

Looking forward to seeing them beat Newcastle. I expect three points out of their first four fixtures will be what they are aiming for. Will be a handful for any of the bottom ten teams by the look of it.

I thought the linesmen were terrible tonight. 4 times they dutifully raised the flag for Liverpool on absolutely marginal situations. I would bet heavy money that at least 2 would be found to be incorrect if VAR has been needed. Referee Oliver did well to ignore it and not blow whistle but what the f**k are the linesmen guessing for? Keep your flag down and VAR can sort. It’s distracting for both teams.

To be fair to Norwich they did better than we would have done! But conversely we normally start off ok and then collapse nearer the end.

Yeah thought they looked decent going forward. They can’t defend like that though. Forget the top 6, Wilson/Delefeou/Richarlison will have a field day.

I thought they were supposed to..

Like Blackpool a few years ago?

Only spent a million so clearly think the squad that came up can compete.

Also disappointing to see spitting thug Carragher front and centre. He will no doubt be in the gantry every Liverpool game. Shame on Sky.

Aren’t they doing what they’re told?

    https://www.premierleague.com/news/1297403

If they’re certain, they have to raise the flag. This seems to be different from some other tournaments since VAR started, where we’ve been linesmen told not to raise their flag at all for offsides.

That is certainly one reason he should never be in front of a microphone again.

The other is that he is completely **** at punditry, using that annoying scouse accent to literally contradict himself and spew nonsense during the game.

This is very true. First half Norwich were a breath of fresh air with their attacking intent and giving it a go with a good style he said. Second half they were naive and he said they should change their style to avoid a cricket score. Top top punditry.

The ironic thing was, Norwich actually won the second half.

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

In England we’ve decided to go a different way to the rest of the world (who’d have thought it?). So domestically the linesman will raise the flag for offside as previously but the attacker is expected to play on and try to score and VAR will decide the offside issue. But when the same attacker is playing in European or International football he will find the linesman will keep his flag down for tight offsides.

  32. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

The problem is, they raised the flag at least twice on calls which led up to goalscoring opportunities and where the Norwich player appeared onside - in which case how was it possible that they were "certain"? Both times I could even tell live on the TV that the calls were very close, so how and why the linesmen still got it wrong even supposedly allowing for leeway with VAR is rather disconcerting.

    5 still isn't as bad as 6.

No idea how VAR called the Jesus one offside, but Sterling's second on, but ho hum.

Newcastle started very brightly against Arsenal.

I actually agreed with MOTD and Ian Wright. It’s currently looking a bit worrying for us...early days yet though of course.
